  • so you dont have to come fully off the throttle to shift with a dog box then

  • Thats like shifting on a motorcycle. Awesome sound and "feeling" with straight cut transmission.

  • Just like ballet for motor head mmmmm.

  • when he burps the throttle, it unloads the engine torque off the gears in the transmission for just a split second. If you don't unload it, you can't pull it out of gear. Thats when the shift occurs, just watch his accelerator and the shifter. :)

  • im sorry, i may sound retarded but how are you able to shift up without the use of the clutch?

  • @Kathezemberg Lol there was times I wondered how the heck he was doing that but its the way the transmission was designed. Its like a SMG gearbox shifting up and you gotta use the clutch to shift down. Thats how I look at it but someone else can explain this in more detail alot better then me. Hope that kinda helps.

  • @jtq007 that made perfect sense, thanks lol

  • @Kathezemberg in my head i understand how it works, just hard to put it into words haha

  • @Kathezemberg It is possible to shift without clutch with every gearbox. You need a good timing to find the right revs when you shift up. A dogbox is a special type of gearbox where you don't need the clutch. /watch?v=n_1jO64tuQA

  • @Kathezemberg You can do this by momentary cut off engine power by lift your foot from gas pedal. Stress on dog-clutch was reduced so you can move out selector fork from engagement and easily up-shift to higher gear because it's dogbox engagement. You can test it by yourself with your stock tranny synchromesh gearbox. You'll find that you can move gear lever from engagement to N by momentary lift your foot from gas. But I'm not recommend to move from N to new gear w/o clutch.

  • awesome vid, let just hope no one trys to copy u in a civic lol xd

  • Nooooooo why did it end I wanted to hear moar :(

  • we got a holden hg ute with a 202 and some sort of dog box they r a beautiful to race

  • HEY PEEPS HOW DOES DIS BOX WORKS

  • fucking hell straight cut dog boxes' whining is absolute sex to ears

  • liking the noises. loving the oldskool wiring. looks like a fuckin hornets nest!

  • for the dog box tranny 6 speed is about 10k, thats not including the gears, about 7k for the 5 speed. beautiful sound

  • How much is the PPG Dogbox? I have 20b Cosmo i am converting from AT to MT

  • @Rotorzilla not cheap mate not cheap at all

  • @RXHardstyle yeah I contacted PPG the said $8000 + shipping LOL

  • @Rotorzilla haha yeh no shitt

  • the secrets in the puma shoes.

  • sounds like 6th gear is helical for less annoying cruising

  • damn, love that sound. all rally cars make that whining sound . why is it so?

  • @Wast3m Straight cut gears

  • @Wast3m Straight cut gears and turbo add to the whining noises.

  • @ElMoShAuN nice. i want those gears! they make such a nice whining noise! are they expensive? how about fuel efficiency lol.

  • Makes me want to go drive a stick shift right now! Awesome video!

  • @Blown4banger is there any other way? oh wait pussys drive autos thats right. lmfao

  • Sounds like an Exotic. Sweet.

  • I have those shoes :)

  • the 6 gear is 1: to 1 in gear ratio = no 'whine'

And Yes, you can use the clutch to shift gear down but not many people use it because it take more 'damage' to shift down because of the higher Nm and speed.

Not so funny to do a bad down shift and you gearbox for ~150 000Dollar .. and then it breakdown.

  • last gear (6th I think) it's helical... =)

  • @MrJoelAlonso I don't think so..Because the gear is very high, it doesn't spin fast enough to 'whine' ... could be wrong but that's my feeling...

  • @odertube its cause he uses the car for normal driving so when he is on a freeway eg, it doesnt piss him off :)

  • @madbob222222 No doubt. there's another video of a BMW 320i on youtube where the final drive isn't 1:1 so it just gets louder and louder... I love it personally but after 1-2 hours on the highway it would really suck.

    watch?v=dmJH84FnQa8

    Awesome video... very loud.

  • @odertube just checked it out, sounds so crazy, i counted 7 gears =/ am i right?

  • @madbob222222 Not sure.. I didn't count them.. was too busy being amazed at his driving skills. :)

Love the final gear at 6000+ RPM though... yikes...

  • I have the same Puma shoes!!!

  • @kaganader Same here haha. Fucking awesome for shifting. Whenever I race I wear them. So damn comfy.

  • @kaganader me too

  • This is the only way to drive !

  • holy shit i'm scared:)

  • damn sounds sick

  • god i love flat shifting.

  • It is quite in 5th gear because that would be the 1:1 ratio on the gearbox... All dogbox's are quite in the 1;1 gear.

  • Hmm... The last gear is not a straight cutted one, isn't it? It doesn't cry at all...

  • Sounds sooooo sexy

  • @trailbandit. the reason for pumping the brake pedal before each corner is to get rid of pad knock back. if you hit a kerb it can slightly push the pads back into the calipers. so by pumping the pedal slightly it gets the pads sitting in the corect possision. notting worse than coming into a corner and having a long pedal!

  • Why do you hit the break with your left foot at the end of every straight before going of the throttle?.... I'm guessing to put heat into the break pads? Or am I completely wrong?

  • @trailbandit

to get brake fluid pressure up i believe..

  • do all racing drivers wear pumas???

  • im not a racing driver, but when i do run the track i wear Piloti

  • @JasonMann8 They where them cause there is almost nothing between the bottom of there foot and the ground. For some they say they can feel the car and engine. Also the the way the heel is. Its hard to explain lol.

Or they just wanna lookin cool lol.

  • @JasonMann8 any slim fitting shoe is good. I like Alpine stars.

  • thats how trannies shuda been made in the first place. u can tell that 6th gear is helical

  • Do they use these kind of transmissions in rally?

  • Indeed they do =)

  • More like an outright sequential. Different design, similar concept.

  • Depends. Regular racers and shops will probably use this transmission, WRC uses sequential transmission (press forward, downshift, pull backward, upshift)

  • God that sounds so sexy. to a normal person it sounds like it's about to blow

tell me, why does it stop in the final gear? it just quiets down?

  • The last gear was not a Straight Cut gear but a Helical Cut gear. Helical Cut gears are angled to reduce noise (these are used in normal cars.) Straight Cut gears have full face contact, they are really strong and produce that beautiful whine.

Pretty smart move for someone that has a car with this type of gearset and it's a daily driver.

  • Finally somone who understands these beautifull machines. The last gear is a helical gear, the reason this gear doesnt create a whine is because its a "constant contact gear" wich means that when the gears mesh they do not loose contact with eachother and do not vary ratios or contact patches when they intersect. What happens with straight cut gears is multiple things, such as the air that is between the two gears gets forced out so fast that it creates a whine when the gears come together.

  • how can he put 6th gear with helical gear? the dog engage could use helical gear too? not only straight gears?

  • I think the last gear is helical instead of straight cut.

  • the upper gears might be helical so it doesnt make the person deaf. they get pretty loud

  • because the last gear is dog engage but not straight cut.

  • very tallented with the foot work, im impressed, well done :)

  • agreed. love the left foot breaking to settle the car before downshifting. well done.

  • I have a GREX Trust Greddy dogbox in my Skyline GTR I have been driving it in the last couple of days as the sun was out. The shifting is very tricky and it needs getting used to. upshifting gears is easy to do just by bliping the throttle but downshifting is much harder to do as it requires rev adjustments. I have tried downshifts with no clutch and also downshifts diping the clutch. using the clutch on downshifts seems to be smoother than a clutchless downshift. u need to shift very fast.

  • sounds like my gixxer

  • Just fucking pro

  • i've been unable to find the answer to this question..

is a dogbox the basically the same as a conventional sequential manual box (i.e. ferrari's F1 transmission, SMG) but only the clutch is operated by the driver?

  • The dogbox is a normal manual H pattern gearbox or sequential.

But instead of having syncro rings and those small teeth on the side of the gear to lock it, it uses a different locking device.

The SMG is way different than a dogbox and I have no idea of how a Ferrari F1 gearbox is.

  • A dog box is a transmission with straight cut gear teeth. Instead of helical gear teeth in a standard street car transmission. The straight cut gears are much stronger than helical gears, and you can clutchless shift them because of that strength. They also engage much easier than helical gears. But most drive ability is lost because they're so rigid.

  • thanx for ur explanation buddy :)

  • Actually, this is incorrect. A dogbox uses dogs to engage the gears instead of synchronizers (synchros). A trans with straight cut gears and synchros is not a dogbox.

  • correct

  • correction, called a half dog box...this has been done for many years now

  • Helical cut gears are in fact stronger than spur (straight cut), contrary to popular belief. Instead they put a lot of axial stress into the gear box casing and create more heat, requiring heavier casing and causing friction losses. Driveability issues stem from the fact there's no synchro mechanism to match rotational speeds prior engaging the gears, not because of rigidity. You can't shift a dog box gently like you would a synchro. Every shift needs to be hard and quick, not easy and smooth.

  • sick

  • is that puma ? omg

  • no sure about these shoes but puma does make racing shoes.

  • Comment removed

  • They are pumas. But not racing shoes. Just regular pumas.

  • nice shoes

  • lol fuckin sounds like a jet engine...SICK!

  • is your top gear helical cut? thats clever when you cruise on the highway :P

  • Indeed! I was thinking how awesome it would be to have in a street/track project car with straight cut gears, but that driving to events would be too awful. Good solution

  • you can also have dogbox with all helical cut gear but it would be weaker. 5th and/or 6th gear doesnt have to transmit so much torque so i think you can easily let them helical with dog engagement only.

  • I think it sounds beautiful.

  • agreed.

  • That sound so fucking racie!

It would mean the end of my driverslicense when I hit the street with this.

  • nice, but the 6th gear is straight too???

  • it makes driving on motorway's quiter, and then not as annoying

  • He just said sixth is helical

  • understood ajaja

  • What is ajaja?

  • is hahaha sorry!

  • Really nice heal and toe, good job.

  • He's single-clutching his downshifts. I thought with these types of gearboxes you'd have to double-clutch every downshift because there's no synchros and you can possibly smash the transmission. I noticed he double-clutched his 3-2 downshift, but he only did that once. Can somebody clear this one up for me as to why he single-clutches downshifts?

  • Traydmus,

He is using 'heal and toe', while he brakes he uses the right side of his right foot on the throttle to match the engine speed to the speed the gearbox is doing.

This means you don't need synchros to engage it for you - but it's not the real reason for heal and toe.

    Hope this helps.

  • hey, any 1 from australia know if the dogbox is street legal or know where i can go to find out about it more will help me alot thinking of getimg but not to sure if there street legal

  • Yeah dude, I'm pretty sure their street leagal. Check out the Ignition DVD Video about PPG Gearbox on youtube. You'll get all your answers there.

  • The 6th gear is an helicoidal gear XD

  • Nice driving shoes

  • Dam, I would love to have one of them in my car.

  • ei yhtään sirklaa:D:D:D

  • i love just love that sound =)

  • that's a great video. Can you tell me why do you tap brakes with your left foot before braking? is it to get the pads and rotors warmer or something?

  • make sure that the pressure in the brake system is A) there, and B) up to full pressure/up to pressure, more or less

  • His car probably has upgraded brakes and rotors with fixed calipers, so he is doing that to counteract pad knockback.

  • not much of an "upgrade" if he needs to do that.

But yeah, after some reading, i've found out what he does. Larger rotors tend to need that sometimes. Also, sounds like his tranny has no coupling...

  • First 3 gears got straight gear teeth, those type of teeth are more stronger, since that's where the car accelerate the most. They are also less expensive to produce and they tend to be noisy (like the reverse gear in almost cars). The high gears got helicoidal teeth, where there is continuous friction between gears, that's why there is no sound. Those gears are used when the speed they have to turn is very fast. Those can take a lot less torque.

  • anyone care to explain why he needs to clutch (even double clutch) on downshifts, but no need to clutch on upshifts?

  • I think it just makes it smoother on the dog gears in the trans although I have heard of clutch-less downshifting on dogbox transmissions. I'm assuming it's pretty difficult to do just right.

  • you'd probably still need to rev-match the two, but i've never driven a dog box car, so it's just a guess...

  • Frequently drivers will use the clutch on one of the 2 shift sequences (up or down) do be gentle... It doesn't matter which times you use the clutch though: it's mainly driver preference.

I've seen Australian V8 Supercar drivers do the heal-toe work like this, and I've also seen some of them do full-throttle clutch stabs on the upshifts (Mark Skaife I believe).

    -Cody

  • i dunno about australian v8 supercar.. but some race series rules include drivers having to heel-toe

  • there is no synchro gear so the rpm need to be fitted to engage but its easier to fit on accel because he already pushing throttle and its shorter than pressing clutch

however to match the rpm in downshift you need to decrease because your small gear run faster at the same speed and wait to the rpm to decrease... this is shorter to pressing clutch in this case

  • @S3LyM its NEARLY impossible but it takes a shit load skill (down shifts)

  • @S3LyM your're right. You could match rpms and float the gears either way. just use clutch to start out with....but downshifting with no clutch even matching rpms is very hard on the gears and shafts in the trans.

  • @S3LyM I know I am late to the party on this answer but...

Clutch less down shifting on a dogbox still requires you to unload the gears.

On up shifts this means letting off the gas for just a moment, as evidenced by this video.

Down shifts require you to blip the throttle to be clutchless, which can be detrimental in a few ways.

  • On big turbo cars the throttle response might be lacking, requiring a long throttle push to unload the gears (long in race time that is)

The other issue is if the engine carries its up throttle too far when you downshift the car could buck the other direction, meaning you transfer weight the wrong way. Without the clutch to temper that action (like in heel and toe down shifting) you can upset the balance of the car worse then just using the clutch.

  • @MCXL1140 It really just comes down to driver skill. Proper Clutch less down shifting is difficult.

Man and it all comes out in reverse order... Sheeeet.

  • Rev-matching. Notice he lifts off on upshifts to let the rpms drop some, while it's smoother to clutch down and not upset the car before turning in for a corner.

  • You nailed it! Slapping it down a gear while in a turn without some type of transition can upset the car a bit...not exactly what you want to do in a race.

  • @nmrmak the double clutch is jus to save the clutch and keep revs up but when shifting up hes around red line which is starting to force the gears apart making it easy for it to slip into gear and keep the revs high making for a faster shift and drive

  • @nmrmak that is what you do with dogbox
