They split after the Qing dynasty fell, and it was 1 of the warlord states trying to reunify all of China. It was reunified in 1949. They have NEVER been peaceful. Before that, 5% of the population(lama monks) controlled 95% of the populaiton, in what was bassiclly a slave society.The chinese gov. stopped this slavery, and some other horrible practices. Dalai lama's brother Thupten just died but Gyalo Thondup is still around from what I hear.

Why?
Because Minority, Since minorities usually lives in remote areas, in general don`t have the advantage most of the majority has. Like basic accomodation, TV, school, transport etc.
When I was in China in 2000, there was a news that a village up in the mountain somewhere finally installed a TV antenna.
Isn`t that a big disadvantage?

as a matter of fact, the persons who reject DLLM the most are the tibetan autonomous government. I read many speeches from Xiang Ba Ping Cuo, the head of the autonomous govern., who is a tibetan as well, he said many times clearly that DLLm is not welcomed.
Why? if DLLM comes back, as political & spiritual leader, together with HIS government, then all the current autonomous ambternaars have to find another job.
So it's simple, or come back simply as a monk, or never come back.
