I saw him in Rodelinda last week live from the Met in HD at my local theater and he struggled through the piece and he had a lot of air in his sound. A bad night perhaps.
@papoocanada : Troglodyte ! A remark like that can only come from the colonies ! Study him ! Listen carefully to his music ! ( He also sings baritone ) ... then perhaps you will find him a genius ... peut-être !
I think he's wonderful singer but this piece is not for his voice not enough meat behind the voice listen to David Hansen version up an coming Australian counter tenor
Saw it live here in Victoria BC tonight. Listened to all the counter tenors here singing and this guy is the very very best. It sounds so warm and natural.
I don't think it was the first British staging, after all Handel lived in England for most of his life, most of his operas were produced there, including this one.
Oh, I think I meant it as one of the first British modern revivals rather than the first ever in history. Handel, of course, saw it performed in England during his lifetime! =)
Does anyone know where can i download the sheet music for this aria.... listening to scholl makes you want to just try singing it!! .. please.. i would be veeerryy grateful, besides it is really interestin to liste to the piece and follow the notes! =)
you can try the link, which is on this opera on german wikipedia... you must look for this in it... but it is really highly virtuostic aria and it is not easy!
I love this tempo ;) This production is a dream. Everything is fine. The conductor create a wonderful dynamic and the singers are just perfect. I bought this DVD and I couldn t stp to watch it for a month ;)
Just heard Russell Oberlin's rendition of this aria and I'm struck by the difference in voice types. Scholl uses falsetto and has excellent technique. Oberlin uses full voice for his alto singing but doesn't sing in the period-authentic way. The full voice is really impacting though.
oberlin risulta avere voce gradevolissima ma la sua classe ecomportamento in vivi tiranno midanno l'idea della flaccidità.Andreas mi va meglio come interpretazione perchè dà la visibile impressione di non aver paura del ""tiranno"
Scholl not only has a matchless voice, about which everything has been said, he also has a heart and intelligence and very good taste to interpret arias so meaningfully. He refrains from trying to beat the composer that virtuoso singers often do, thus killing the whole enjoyment of the thing.
I hate Scholl for singing this aria so effortlessly and beautifully. He totally kicks Oberlin's natural alto butt. I preferred Minter over Oberlin, but now prefer Scholl over the other two. THX for posting.
The arias of Grimoaldo (the "tyrant")are superb. You should listen, e.g., to "Prigioniera ho l'alma in pena" and to "Pastorello d'un povero armento"...
En este vivi tiranno a Andreas Scholl se le ve un poco nervioso , pero su coloratura es envidiable , dificilmente otro contratenor iguale este vivi tiranno . Ni David Daniels , ni Russell Oberlin.

Interesting staging...I believe this was the first British staging of this opera, right?
Thanks for posting!

Great song, but this scene looks like a Baroque-music version of the Sound of Music.

Andreas touches the heart and the mind; intelligence, but above all beauty and purity of tone. There is not another countertenor like him today.
Magnificent...always!

Yo creo que el señor Oberlin no tiene nada que enviadiar a Scholl.
Andreas es genial, en eso estamos de acuerdo, pero es difícil e incluso un tanto absurdo decir quién es mejor.
