@ReverendSyn by that time, the Federation tried to gather as many allies as possible for the upcoming war against the Dominion. Even the Cardassians. The fact that Cardassians & Klingons hated each other didn´t make it easier. That´s why Sisko hesitated for a moment at the beginning: should he intervene or not? If he intervenes, he probably gets the Cardassians as new allies but fucks up with the Klingons. If he doesn´t, he won´t get the Cardassians.
@harpiyon Perhaps. But the Kligons have proven to be strong allies. They should naturally take precedence over Cardassians, who have proven themselves to be irredeemablly evil. Just look what they did to Bajor. Look what they did to Picard and O'Brien. You can't just ignore attrocities like that.
And the Cardassians sided with the Dominion.
There's no difficulty in the decision at all. Nuke those scaly gray facists.
@ReverendSyn i agree, i would have favoured the Klingons. i think the plan was to get the Cardassians AND keep the Klingons
right, you can´t ignore the past atrocities, but with an enemy like the Dominion you have to gather as many allies as possible
true, the Cardassians sided with the Dominion but that happened later: by this time it still looked as if they were interested in helping the Federation - or at least, stay out of their way
and you can´t just "nuke" a complete race: 1st directive ;)
if cardassians are "pure evil", i don't see how klingons, with their obsessively violent and aggressive culture, are much better. and you claimed that they should be supported in an unprovoked invasion they're "strong allies" (which is in itself dubious, given the power of the cardassians), which makes any moralizing irrelevant
@zzxcvb98 I think that really the Klingons and Cardassians are two sides of the same coin: both hunger for power and military might, but while the Klingons have some sense of honor about them, the Cardassians are under no such compunction and can be as sadistic as they like. For example, could you see the Klingons doing ANYTHING like what the Cardassians did to the Bajorans during the Occupation?
as was explored near the end of the show, many klingons in positions of power pay lip service to the code of honor while exploiting it for political purposes. the klingons never had the need to pillage a world for resources
@zzxcvb98 True, but most of their less-than-honorable behavior consisted of back-door deals and political intrigue to at least maintain appearances. Cardassians had no such interest or need for an appearance of honor, just get whatever you need in the most efficient manner. Again, the Klingons are the Soviets to the Cardassians' Nazi's - maybe not the best, but certainly the lesser of two evils.
Raise sheilds and activate cloak?? WTF are you thinking "Captain" Sisko?? You cant just turn the cloak on while an enemy ship has you locked with their weapons systems!! Your fired!
@PrinceOfDahaka one of the best Star Trek actors, he portrayed strength, authority and sometimes a slight dose of fanatism & madness like no other. He was no Picard, but for dealing with the Cardassians & for the Dominion War he was the right man at the right place.
@orionpirates he was the main antagonist of the series. a main villain for sisko. both were masters of what they did. Dukat took on a Klingon bird of prey in a cargo ship. and sisko was called "the sisko," first name, dont fuck with.
@pinoi78 Agreed 100% JJ dumbed down Star Trek so badly that its not even recognizable anymore. I pretend that movie doesn't exist and just watch old Trek like this as well as play Star Trek Legacy on XBOX360. I wish we could have more NON JJ Trek again :(
"Arm quantum torpedo's, drop the cloak, and raise shields *raise eyebrow*....we're going in!!" One of the best lines of this episode right there....especially with the music in the background as the Defiant shimmers out of cloak, you know the Defiant is going to kick some ass!!!! :D Starfleet's first premier warship, doing exactly what she was built for :D
A lot of people seem to think the Defiant is portrayed as "Overpowered" but they seem to ignore the fact that it was built specifically as a Warship, whereas ships like the Intrepid class Voyager or Galaxy class Enterprise were *Not* built for war.
A little warship built to stand against -Borg cubes- is naturally going to fare better than ships designed to map out stars and nebula ; )
Prototype that asskicked its way up and down the Alpha AND Gamma Quadrants, racking up a Kara Thrace-esque kill count, and generally relieving the bowels of any enemy crew it happened to square off against.
And yet, it was completely useless against the Borg. The message seems to be that the Borg will fuck your shit up, no matter how badass your spaceship. It being a prototype makes no difference, because it couldn't possibly have been any more awesome.
Probably the one with the name that starts with S and ends with uperSaiyanAI.
The Defiant was one of the few, *true* warships the federation designed and built. Many people complain that it is overpowered, I explained why it isn't.
@SuperSaiyanAl It took the Enterprise over 3 hours to get from the Neutral Zone to Earth. In that time the Defiant probably took a beating. And w/o its shields, its armor can't hold for very long. It took the Breen only a few minutes to destroy it when it lost all of its systems failed.
That was a different Defiant. The prototype was considered superior, hence why Nog said it felt alittle "Sluggish". The new Defiant also has no cloak.
@Archedgar In one TNG episode, the one when all the crew lost their memories Worf was reviewing the Enterprise's schematics he said the ship had phasers, 250 Photon Torpedoes, and a high-capacity shield grid. Riker responds by saying "This is a warship." So I think that while a Galaxy-Class vessel's number one mission is for exploration, they can convert to combat duty really quickly.
The Klingons were right. They were always sneaky. They knew the Cardassians were untrustworthy and would betray everyone so they could get ahead and be Superior to everyone else.
Worf should have gone with the Klingon Chancellor to attack and Invade Cardassia ( after taking a Leave of Absence from Starfleet ). Then rejoined Starfleet afterwards and then helped Commander Sisko fight the Klingons as they attack the Space Station.
Not really, when you think about it the Cardassians only joined the Dominion due to the much more advanced race of honourable warriors (Klingons) sneak attacking them while their guard was down. And while they were weakened.
On a whim. As bad as the Cardies are, the Dominion war showed that they were were willing to pick a side and stick with it during a war. At least until their allies start trying to wipe their race and kill unarmed civillians anyway.
That pause in Capt. Sisco's decision making indicated to me that either he wasn't sure whether rescuing Gul Dukat is such a good idea, that he should just let him perish, or he should fire on allies of the Federation just to rescue Gul Dukat. Awesome video!
DS9 was THE best series of Star Trek after TOS. I loved how it dealt with issues of religion and politics and talked about serious issues. Not to mention this series got to flesh out all of the characters that were introduced in TNG. In TNG we got to see different species sometimes but the Enterprise moved around too much, and Voyager was in an entirely different quadrant altogether. DS9 was stationery, which really made it feel more homely...
It's just plot inconsistancy. They have different writers, and in some episodes some 'facts' won't be the same as they were in an earlier episode, sometimes this is done deliberately - to make way for a plot device - or just by accident.
I love how Star Trek shields work. Basically its the amount of No name characters who sit in front of computers and get "sparked". When there is no more characters to get sparked the shields are down and the ship is usually destroyed LOL
Jeez, talk about a turning point. Knowing how things ended up, Sisko probably would have let Dukat and the council members die if it meant saving the Alpha Quadrant from 3 more years of war. If that ship had been destroyed, Cardassian wouldn't have joined the Dominion, Klingons would have been able to help defend Bajor and the wormhole and the Dominion would never have had a foothold in the Alpha quadrant. Just mine the wormhole and case closed. The only flaw would be the Martok Changeling.
what i liked to see about this episode and the one after it...i think it was the one after...was just how much of a power house Sisco and the Federation made DS9
Hell! when the Dominion attacks later on, the station brazenly brushes off a lamed Cardassian ship that slams into its shields after being disabled
tough little ship! good thing the dominion is defeated, else janeway and her crew, plus her unsophisticated ship - voyager will be all its left for the federation. even a small jehadar fighter can destroy the voyager. all hail THE DEFIANT!
Some parts of DS9 take place after the end of TNG. After Generations, Worf transferred to DS9, eventually ending up as ambassador. I don't remember the exact sequence of events, but that's the gist of it.
