no one could sing gospel like Mahalia Jackson! I was raised a white Catholic girl in the 50's-60's south and even I RECOGNIZED THAT MUSIC WAS OH SO WONDERFUL
What a gift to the world she was, A voice like none other. May she rest in peace and sing with the angels in heaven, What a wonderful time they must be having and jesus there listening.
Look at her! She has a look about her that tells you there is no one in that room but her and God! I love to hear her sing. Always very powerful. Her voice always brings tears to my eyes. Thats bound to be how angels in Heaven sound!
I didn't know her but I miss her very much. She's been a great inspiration to me and I cherish her music, voice, and spirit. I look forward to singing with her in heaven. This song was said to be one of Martin Luther King Jr.'s favorites. I celebrate both he and Mahalia Jackson today while praising the same God and Father through their efforts.
@TheMarytemple - Yes It Was Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King's Favorite and He Whispered Into Jesse Jackson's Ear and the Musician That Was To Play at the Rally Over the Weekend As He Lay on the Steps in front of Room 306 at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN on that sad and tragic evening at 6:02pm April 4, 1968 and He Whispered.." Make Sure You Play It Good and Sweet For Me"...I Will Be Posting Ms. Jackson's Song on My Face Book Page April 4th for Dr. King along with my Memorial RememberingHim
That just goes to show that regardless of the simplicity and even the sheer beauty of this song, there shall always will be idiots that for some reason or another dislike something about it. Well at least 13 of them out of around 650,000 views, not bad I guess. But what it means to me is just to do your best and if the cause is just then don't worry what anyone's says or thinks. May God bless this whole world.

I see why my mother wanted this song at her funeral. this song is so powerful. this song touch your heart and soul. the world better get right with the man above.
I truley love Miss Mahailia Jackson. When I was a little boy I thought that she was my Grandmother, because my Grandmother had her album presented as the very first one in her record case. To this day I can't remember my Grandmther, but I remember Miss Mahailia Jackson, and I thank God for at least that memory. Thank you Jesus.
@awswater1 I remember also when I was small and coming up my mother also had albums around of Ms. Mahalia I listened to them so much I felt a genuine relationship between us that when she died I cried so much. I now love to listen to all her music. A great spiritual Icon.
I remember this song from "Mississippi Burning" the movie. Everytime Mahalia sings this song I cry. She has a heavenly voice. I love her gospel music. She is the best of all times. One of my favorite is, Prayer changes things". Ms. Mahalia RIP! I know that you are singing in heaven.
oohh gospel gives me the chills. i know i don't walk the straight and narrow and that i only have few things to be grateful for in this world but i thonk god that he gave me the will to be grateful for them. I have come this far by faith leaning on the lord and i plan to continue the rest of my journey this way. p.s. who said the young peoples not in the church
I heard her sing the next morning after Rev. Martin Luther King was killed on the Good morning American Show. I'm now 54, There is no one that can light a candle to the Great Mahalia Jackson. I dare say no one would try. All Glory be to the Farther.
I've been a sinner almost all my life but her singing this song make me feel guilty. I am confessing that I am a sinner, LORD! I am not worthy. Take my hand...
@boyoyify We are all sinners in God eyes he died for our Sins repent, get on your knees and ask him to forgive you, Pray about it he will deliver you!
Only just found this on the net and all I can say is WOW this Lady has something special. she truly speaks to the Lord in song. The Voice of an wonderful Christian gospel singer.
To: thejazzsinger: Thank you so, so much for uploading these Mahalia Jackson memories. You took my mind back to a time when my family and I were poor, struggling and couldn't see a brighter day, but we had God, love and one another. It feels just like sitting in front of our black & white TV and watching Mahalia electrify the crowds, just like she did us. Thanks for the beautiful memories.
This wonderful woman what a precious voice, a true blessing to the worlds great vast peoples. I believe that it will be her voice echoing throught the halls of heaven when I get there. Her music came from deep within her soul and we not only heard her music, we learned from it.
I'm an atheist and I love listening to Ms Mahalia Jackson's music, even if what she is singing about is based on mythology, folklore, and fairy tale stories of the bible.
I really feel Miss Jackson was truly "worn out" and was singing this to Jesus. She knew her sure foundation and healing now and in the hereafter is in Him and His full atonement and blood for our salvation, redemption and healing. She is singing to her Lord, almost as if she senses He truly can hear her, which He can. Won't YOU call on Him today? Come, Just as you ARE. He Loves you. Christianity is a relationship with Jesus Christ, NOT a religeon. Accept Him as your savior and Lord today.
@Izzybell51 Oh yea man. She and Jesus were the only people in the room at that point. You could tell she was singing to God. Seems as if she was pleading for him to give her rest. God bless her heart.
@Izzybell51 you are absolutely right, and I couldn't put it any better! christianity IS a relationship with Jesus Christ and not a religion. I know he died on the cross for my sins. TO HIM BE THE GLORY, NOW AND FOREVER AMEN!
She was VERY ill during this time with minor heart attacks that caused her to have weakened breath control during this time. Ironically though, I believe some of her best performances came during this time.
@ferociousgumby Yes this was doing the time she was ill but I think she was singing to the Lord not really singing to entertain the audience. You can feel it in her voice and see it in her eyes, she's having a conversation with God. She sounds beautiful to me though so pure and humble to see Gods glory all over mother Mahalia!
@ferociousgumby I wouldn't say "bad voice," as she was good at her worst. Yes, she was ill and died not soon after of sarcoidosis--a disease that invaded her heart, lungs, and body in general. Beyond the physical challenges of disease, she had suffered the loss of her heroes--the Kennedys and MLK. She had her day and was approaching her end, which gives the lyrics new meaning, if you really listen.
Neither critics nor comments are not my way. Why? I can't believe that God inspires someone to sing, yet, flesh and blood try to correct the inspiration. Unbelievable. When I don't feel in a song I just listen and move one. I have no suggestion to make. It may not inspiring for me. That's my way.

The 8 things that hit the dislike button are soul-less. I don't care what religion or faith you are, when you see someone sing with spirit and emotion like this, you can't help but let that sound resonate through you. God bless this woman.
This wonderful lady is the lady that took Della Reese on tour with her for 3 summers, when Della Reese was about 13 years old... Della sang in Mahalia's choir....Della Reese is also an amazing woman and wonderful singer!!!
MAN, MAN, MAN I'VE HEARD THIS SONG A NUMBER OF TIMES BUT I TELL U THAT I HAVE NEVER ANYBODY SING IT AS GOOD AS SHE DID, PROPS TO THE LATE AND GREAT MAHALIA JACKSON,
Step back and listen to yourselves. Most people want racism to disappear but you are castigating white people in your comments. God sees the heart of man, not the color of the skin. He loves us ALL and died for us ALL. Question: If white folks were making comments on YT or any site, such as yours, concerning black folks... would you be screaming RACISM!? Your comments are wrong, in the eyes of man and more importantly... in the eyes of God.
Quick question: Who are rge REAL racists ?? Why isn't there a National Association for the Advancement of White People ? Why no WHITE history month ? Why no WHITE congressional caucus ? Why the hell no United WHITE College Fund...for WHITE minds ONLY ? Affirmative Action is BULLSHIT !! If the blacks can't read enough to pass a test, they shouldn't be given preferrence !! Why don't WHITE people RIOT and destroy their own cities ? Screw U
@yourwhitemaster No disprect intended, but black people have walked a very different path to normalcy and safety. You just don't understand. It's so complicated. Try harder to comprehend the other side. It's not the same as the white experience. Don't be angry.
@themrduragss They'll never be able to sound like us no matter how hard they try. Gospel is one of our God given talents. It's in our roots, in our blood, and in our hearts nobody can take that away. It's a reminder to us of how our ancestors kept their eyes on the Lord no matter how hard times were. Whites will never understand that.
@Allina277 I understand that true gospel is of the black culture and I give you that. Please realize that many whites know that. You don't understand this. I do.
this song was the start of that movie mississippi burning. that movie is also a great inspiration.... lots of strong messages between the movie and this song
This was my grammies favorite hymn...It's just beautiful...what a voice and what a great singer...It sure brings me back wonderful memories... Precious Lord take my hand...Im your child :) Till we see each other again grammy... Now your with our Precious Lord...
Wonderful Mahalia, I loved you when I was a youngster & I love you now, a beautiful person, a beautiful singer, you can bring tears of joy to even the most hardened of hearts.
she's a wonderful woman who love god so much.i hate that, i hate that red botton so freaken much.if someone love you or hate you still keep showing love to them she understand that god is a wonderful and loving, caring friend to everybody.so how could you not accept that huge love of him?he loved you first and bring you into this world before the foundation.
Hey, I’m a young artist, & I would really appreciate it if everyone would check out my cover of Michael Bublé’s “You’re Nobody till Somebody Loves You.” Although I’m knowledgeable that Michael Bublé was not the first to record the song, my version was inspired by his rendition, nonetheless. I promise you that you will not regret giving my version of the song a listen, & it will truly knock you off of your feet! So please listen & enjoy! Thanks!
If you loved this song, then you will definitely love "Trouble of the World". Mahalia Jackson is by far one the greatest singers of all time. She has been such an inspiration to so many people. Her voice is so pure & melodic. The sound of her voice brings me to tears.
What makes Mahalia so unique is her originality. She fused the Baptist hymns and sanctified religious music with blues tonality. She worked steadfastly at anything that would sustain her through the Great Depression. She worked HARD with little to live by. She inspired countless other musicians. Ultimately, I've read in legitimate literature, she-- unbeknownst to her-- changed the course of American popular music. Great legacy to a great spirit of Mahalia Jackson.

This wonderful lady is the lady that took Della Reese on tour with her for 3 summers, when Della Reese was about 13 years old... Della sang in Mahalia's choir....Della Reese is also an amazing woman and wonderful singer!!!

Mahalia Jackson's beautiful, resonant voice surely was a gift bestowed to her by the Lord.

Your comments are wrong, in the eyes of man and more importantly... in the eyes of God.
c44LuWanda 6 months ago

I don't like how white are high-jacking black peoples music that came out of our suffering! its like the devil reading the bible
themrduragss 7 months ago
@themrduragss They'll never be able to sound like us no matter how hard they try. Gospel is one of our God given talents. It's in our roots, in our blood, and in our hearts nobody can take that away. It's a reminder to us of how our ancestors kept their eyes on the Lord no matter how hard times were. Whites will never understand that.
Allina277 7 months ago
@Allina277 I understand that true gospel is of the black culture and I give you that. Please realize that many whites know that. You don't understand this. I do.

Mahalia must have been Aretha's idol because Aretha used to dress exactly like this back in the 60's & even wore her hair like her too.

Thanks!
