Does anyone know if there's some kind of special meaning in the title of this song? I know how the naming of Grey Pianos Flying came about, but this title has confused me for quite some time.
As usual, his playing is just cosmic. Although I know they both talked to each other, the thought of Shawn and Allan Holdsworth playing together just blows my mind.
Not in a millions years, but one in a billion, what are the odds. Seriously insane yet sanely in touch with the passion that is music; enough to tragically live the pain and sadly die for the art, but bring so much pure joy to those who understand. Aloha
The thing about Shawn was that he made music when he played fast or slow. He could improvise , build around the melody, and toss out great chord voicings on top of it all - whereas most shredders just permutate through their licks and tricks and CALL it improvising.

What sucks is even if I ever could play fast pyro licks as good as Shawn, I could still never do the melodies and other genius stuff that he writes. And plus, I'd develop some kind of carpel tunnel and arthritis in the process. And all the while be called a copycat/fale and to write my own stuff, etc. Tough road for the "next Shawn" ahead.
Well...Buckethead is more along the lines of the various two handed tricksters out there that are interesting, but I don't associate with Shawn's technical level and control. I always contend that Eric Johnson is one of the closest technically because he uses the wide intervals, is careful of his tone and phrasing, and doesn't just play chromatically and tap all over the place to add more notes just so there's more notes ya know.
Maybe I should check out some older stuff because the newer stuff just seemed like Vai on speed with very little harmony or anything memorable. His music is good, but just seems like he's not sure what to do with his backing half the time. However, there were a few keepers but I always felt like there should have been vocals or something over Buckethead's amazing rythmic ideas. I know at one time people thought Shawn and Bucket the same but that was just lead solo vs. solo not real songs.
yeah, id recommend the elephant man's alarm clock for great solo work or the deli creeps. the deli creeps is a great rock/metal band with a singer featuring buckethead on guitar. you should also try some of buckethead's jazzy and funky stuff with travis dickerson.
LOL,I know this was an old post but I happen to like Buckethead very much while alot of people don't.They say he is sloppy, repetitious bla, bla. But Ive seen every guitar great have bad gigs. And yes BH has some sloppy stuff here and there but also has the same material played amazing on another gig.Good days and bad happens to everyone.Lane spoke about that happening to him but havent been able to find any of his bad days, lol.Anyway BH should have more respect than some gus give him.
But in my humble opinion Shawn Lane is arguably the greatest guitarist to ever pick up the instrument.I have never seen anyone that could match his speed, technical control and amazing phrasing. Not to mention his melodic arrangements that always showed his rythmic diversity.Never be anyone like Shawn.Gone but never forgotten RIP great one.
I love Buckethead... and if not for his kind words toward his friend Shawn... I would not have known about the Great One! ty Bh... and I think Brian was right when he said,"Shawn Lane is by far the greatest guitarist that ever lived."
Absolutely agree. For me Shawn is the most awe inspiring guitar player in history.Unlike alot of modern virtuoso's ive been listening to for 20+ yrs Shawn's music never gets old, there is always something new to be noticed everytime I hear something for the thousandth time, lol.
But seriously Shawns amazing technique, amazing phrasing and wonderfully melodic arrangements combined with his blazing speed can simply never get old, ever,ha,ha Shawn was everything anyone could be in a Guitar player.Yeah that's Shawn Lane to me.
Check out Shawn Lane at Google Plus, laters.

sounds like a primus song kinda minus the shred. shawn lane .. still the best in my opinion. his reputation persists even through death.

I think Shawn Lane (and Greg Howe!) were genetically engineered on the planet Guitarus Fantasticus.
