No matter how old a recording is, it's brand new if you've never heard it before. I'm a bop player (sax) and I thought I heard everything Fats recorded, and now I find I was wrong! What a beautiful solo he takes, and how wonderful to hear it for the very first time! Fat Girl was the bridge between the Dizzy-type boppers and the Clifford Brown/post bop players. His influence, through just a handful of records, and mostly as a sideman, is still felt today. He died way too young.
Wow I can really hear Miles' early sound here ... and never realised where he got that ... thanks so much for the post
