It's fairly obvious from watching this he was not applying power while demonstrating, only showing technique. I mean, after a whole day of full power kata demonstrations, I know I tend to want a short nap. :)
@slingman6 He was also sic when he did this. Jet-Lag weakened his immune system when he came to the US, so he had a cold and was too tired to put full strength into it.
@dWizzle85 weak? you havent learned enough about martial arts when you call another system weak its not nice to do that I'm not weak and its what Ive studied
@ehckt I am trying to decide between this and shinto for my next tournament kata. I am a black belt and will be competing as such for the first time this season. Any suggetions? I did seisan for the past two seasons and kicked butt with it! :)
He was sick when these videos were filmed, you can still see the technique though; and also his amazing kicks like 786myfist said. He didn't live too many years after this was filmed.
Although Master Shimamabukus' kata form is usually sloppy I really like his snap on his kicks and punches his kata pleases the eye. I am a practitioner of Isshin Ryu by the way.
I have to polish this kata by the end of the day for a tournament or my daddy's gonna skin me alive!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
(Breath)
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
LOL, just kidding... I'm really not quite sure what he"ll do. All I know that if I don't work over it for at least an hour I'm gonna be grounded for a month! :'(
Learn the technique before you judge it. It has more power and balance than you can imagine. Isshinryu is as much an art form as it is a discipline and it may not look like much, and I used to think that way until I began to study it.
He was also rushed off of the plane to do one of these video's and sick, therefore he wasn't really thrilled to do this performance. The film is also 8mm so he had to slow everything WAAAAY down.
I hate to be critical, but 90% of the people on here don't do the katas like Shimabuku. They put backfists where punches should be, and their form is all sloppy. Watch the four year old kid do Wansu. He does it better than most of the "black belts" on here. Just being honest, not mean :)
Wow, the Kata Wunsuu from my style, Shuri Ryu, is a bit like it, but with different attacks... A Tettui in stead of what looks like a Nukite and it stops after the opponent has been thrown to the floor. Weird o_O"
I was so hoping I would find this. I used to compete with this kata all the time, but after giving up karate I've forgotten it. Now I can relearn, yay :) (And from Master Shimabuku no less! lol)
I practice isshinryu but my senseis complain about our horse stances... Maybe I should show them this and say: "Master Shimibuku's horse stances didn't really look like the way YOU'RE telling us to do this. yes balrog919, I think the kata SHOULD look like this.
Thanks for posting...

Isshinryu karate was developed in Okinawa, which is actually a small Island off the mainland.
The people there speak a distinctive dialect of Japanese, which I've always found to be very hard to understand.

I need to know what kata master Shimabuku made himself for my brown belt test.
TheCobra94 3 years ago
Sunsu was his original kata. The rest were incorporated from Gojii-ryu and Shorin-ryu.

You should be able to move quickly in and out of your stances. Try your horse and see what gives you the best range of motion with your techniques.
