  • There's an 1834 written version of this song from Nottingham in England. Notated pretty much as you hear it here.

  • Simon LeBon can make any song sound good!

  • 666 likes...creepy.

  • HAHAHAHA

1:11 Simon Le Bon's strut across the stage! Simon Le Brent more like...

  • well i am super fan and they wanted to be the duran duran new orleans duran but if you where there there it would have been spectacular well i was not and such is life

  • There's only one word that popped into my head:

    Sweet!

  • This is actually very good.

  • I love these boys

    Always have

    Always will

    And I still would

    ;o)

    xxxx

  • Alan Price of The Animals has claimed that the song was originally a sixteenth-century English folk song about a Soho brothel, and that English emigrants took the song to America where it was adapted to its later New Orleans setting.

The oldest known existing recording is by Appalachian artists Clarence Ashley and Gwen Foster and was made in 1933. Ashley said he had learned it from his grandfather, Enoch Ashley.

  • @shockinyou2 : thanks for the info =)

  • @shockinyou2 copy paste wikipedia :P

  • drums are awesome on this song

  • very nice

  • Better than muse. By a long way.

  • Lots of people consider the song written by Alan Price (of the Animals). any versions older then that is just a tottally different tune. Listen to Lead Belly's. The lyrics were not the Animals but most of the tune was

  • @chimpbottle Whoever is of that opinion is quite wrong; the song is a piece of folk music that was heard by Eric Burden at a club in Newcastle. It is a mystery as to who wrote the song; much like many other folk pieces.

The song is incredable, though; and I take a bow to whoever came up with it.

  • @chimpbottle You have no idea what you're talking about so please stop perpetuating misinformation on here. The Animals modeled their version off of Bob Dylan's version of the song so no, The Animals had nothing to do with making the tune or chords.

  • @greatestxgift

Talking about the song "House of the Rising Sun" lol

  • @chimpbottle You're not seriously this dense, are you? I'm talking about the song "House of The Rising Sun". One more time, read slowly and carefully, The Animals modeled their version off of Bob Dylan's version of this song (who copied Dave Van Rook's version) so The Animals had nothing to do with writing the chords or tune of their version. Do you think you can understand that?

  • @greatestxgift

Nah, I've listened to Bob Dylan's version. Didn't sound very much like what The Animals did at all.

  • @chimpbottle You have to be legally deaf or have complete shit for brains if you can't see how both are musically structured the same.

  • @greatestxgift

Deep breath, big guy. We'll get through this. Together.

I still think The Animals shaped the song to the familiar tune we know today more than any other musician/group lol.

  • @chimpbottle The Animals made the tune more famous than anyone else but they had nothing to do with writing the chords, the lyrics, or the tune itself. You ignorantly stated that most of the tune was written by them when in fact, you're completely wrong. If you have no idea what you're talking about then try to refrain from perpetuating misinformation on public forums as it makes you look like a fool.

  • @greatestxgift The guitar riff was created by Hilton Valentine of the Animals which makes their version unique from the original folk background of the song. Hilton Valentine is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame because of it. Most of the covers of the song copy the Animals/Hilton Valentine version. Sadly, he makes no royalties from it because of how record companies and Alan Price screwed over the rest of the band members by getting the rights to their songs behind the rest of the band's backs.

  • @greatestxgift

    Can you be illegally deaf?

  • Simon has the best ass in the business

  • This version is pretty cool. It has a raw sound to it that is catchy.

  • This version is Much more better than the version covered by Muse.

  • @alexe610 exactly muse ruined a classic. so sad and terrible.

  • @robot4me Everyone bashes Muse version, I mean sure its not very strong but its just one take on this classic. Its been covered so many times and each one is different.

  • #1 Simon Le Bon is still a god!!

#2 No one knows the exact origins of this song, it's 1st recording was 1933, but it had been around for around 100 years at that point.

#3 Would have been nicer if some girl had not tried to sing back up!!

  • nice version.probably the best

  • Fantastic rendition of a song with a ton of renditions.

Coincidentally, I saw these cats in New Orleans a number of years ago. Stellar work... they make great original music, and they can get down, too. More than just pretty boys, even though that's the image that made them famous. They can belt out some really great music.

  • ok that was so hot and original. love dD

  • classic le bon

  • The Guitar Riff/chords at 2:48 - 2:50 reminds me of a Stones song BUT can't quite remember the title.

  • @theselector Paint it Black

  • WOW...wish they would have put more stuff like this on THank You

  • you know? i came here expecting somenthing totally different but this is really cool :D

  • This is really cool and interesting. I'm not sure in what context they chose it but it's a nice take with the crunchy, low tonal rhythm section and lilting vocals. There were a lot of references to various bands covering this song but The Ventures version is one of my favorites.

  • cool interpretation!

  • It's a folk song. I think Leadbelly was the first recorded artist playing this song, but the version widely known to the current population was made by The Animals, but the version of the lyrics used there was there a few years earlier. Hope that helps.

  • nd it was from the point of veiw a female. The animals did it from the males point of veiw. Animals is the better know one

  • no one really knows who wrote this song

  • great cover! very nice...

  • i love this band !awesome !

  • Dang, Duran Duran still sounds pro! Simon has taken good care of his voice.

  • I don't usually listen too Duran Duran, but holy shit. They are GOOOOD!

  • This is an awesome version. Love how they injected their own style to it.

Coming from a huge DD fan, I'd say the Animals still did it best. This come real close though.

  • There is no 'original' ... it's a folk song ... versions vary ... words vary ... but it was actualy recorded for the first time, back in the 30s ...

  • i always thought the animals wrote it,,,thats one on me,,,,,any ideas who it was who wrote or recorded it first,,,,,ill love to know.

  • Check it out in wikipedia ... they give a detailed run-down of the history of the song.

  • @mrcolinraycyrus nobody knows who wrote it

  • really man this clears alot up been looking for this song's original for sooooo long, you must be right, with the thumbs up & all

  • Wikipedia has a good article on this song.

  • Love Simon

  • awesome ! i love this band !

  • wow never heard this version before... not bad... The best version ive heard is Ploy of Oracle - House of the Rising sun

  • Cool! But ive always wanted to hear Jim Morrisson do this one.

  • YES!!!

  • Muy bueno, dos clásicos: Duran, Dura, y The Animals.

  • thanks God for DD!!!!

  • was this at the House of Blues in New Orleans, circa 2001?

  • This is from the VooDoo Festival in New Orleans- October, 2006.

Tradition to add a NOLA influenced song into the set when playing the fest.

    GREAT work on DD's part.

    Dom- serious goodness here... ;)

  • I love it!! Simon's looking better than ever!

  • simon is gawjus

  • mtv use to be great now well never watch it my kids dont either i have lisened to dd scince early 82 and have allways loved them scince the first song and sight simon is fanntastic,in looks and sound and this song was great.

  • GOD! His voice is like butter! Sexy, hot butter and I agree, he gets better with age!

  • thats great!!

  • I didn't know they did a cover

  • You must be a casual fan - In '81 they covered Bowies 'Fame', in '82 the did Steve Harley's 'Come Up & See Me (Make Me Smile)', in '93 they did Lou Reeds 'Femme Fatale' and in '95 they did a whole album of covers. They've done other stuff too, most of which you'll find on bootlegs.

    sorry

    I'm a Duran nerd

    Peace

  • Simon could make a phone book sound like sex.

  • Amen to that! He's gets sexier every single year. Damn I love that man!!

  • @vlcupper : ohhhhhhh yeah!!!!!!

  • I love it : D

  • wow, what a version. i love it

  • WHAT! HOW IS THIS SONG GOOD! i thought this was gonna be absolute rubbish, but i love it!

  • gah this is oddly good =] but my fave version is bob dylans for sure! :D peace

  • I respect this group! They made that song sound like their own! But no body has ever done it quite as good as the Animals! The animals version sounds so mean and powerful, i have never heard anyone duplicate it quite as good!

  • These boys have had a place in my heart for almost 25 years...they can do no wrong.

  • i havent heard much by duran duran, but this is probably one of the best covers of this song ive heard

  • Best cover ever!!!

There isn't anything Simon can't sing!!

  • i really don't think there is! lol. awesome cover by an amazing band. i sorely miss the 80s!

  • HE IS MY SWEET HEART............

  • For those who may be unaware,

Arguably one of the best band to come out of Britain in the eighties.

you couldn`t turn **Mtv** on back then and not see a heavy rotation of them.

    ** MTV

was a television program that played only music all day all night. By 1989-1990 was destroyed by corporate greed. U can still see a small version everyonce in a while when they play 1 song out of a 24 hour day.

  • Oh, you speak from the bottom of my heart! You must not be ashamed that you liked DD, they were ever a great band. And MTV was a great tv-programm. I saw Ray Cokes every evening. Do you remember the U2-competition? They played a gig in Sweden and it was broadcasted to an english blokes house! I wished I was him:)

Now, MTV is crap! Poor children!

  • Im duran duran fun befor 25 years ago , NO.1 in the world , i love so so much ,simon is very cool..............

  • Im not a Duran Duran fan but SICK covr guyz!!!

  • alright! i'm not a duran duran fan, but this is a sick cover.

  • WONDERFUL!!!!

    The best band EVER!!!!!

  • impresionante

  • I like it!

  • great song , great version , great band !!

  • This is a good song.

  • Delicious!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What album is thiis off of? It's great!

  • cover of the animals song

  • it's a folk song, not from the animals. They covered it, like everyone else.

  • @arflar Correction. the version we heard from the Animals was written by Bob Dylan. The folk version has the same lyrics but sounds nothing like what we know today.

  • @MikeIvensky What do you mean Dylan wrote it? You mean the words? Certainly not the music. Besides, I've never seen Dylan credited to this song. it's an old old old song done by countless people.

  • @mus1cat The words are a VEEERY old folk song, but it used to have a different tune. VERY different, 100% sure. The new tune is Dylan, about 80% sure.

  • @arflar ya but the animals made it sound badass

  • @joshuavalenzuela71 frijid pinks version is a million times better than the animals version

  • @seansennstrom I don't think that it's possible to say that one is better than the other. As is the nature of a folk song, each succesive interpretation adds to the song.

The Animals version is a completely different interpretation than that of Frijid Pink. I say that the are both very good interpretations.

  • @dKlompas It is possible to say that one is better than the other. What you're saying would be the equivalent to me telling off someone, for them saying that cake is better than pie. It's all down to preference. ;)

  • @arflar Thank you for pointing that out. I have been digging into this song for almost thirty years, and I STILL can't find its deepest roots. Obviously the lyric content cannot be older than the fame of Nola, but even that predates the American Revolution. As for the progression of the music itself, I swear it comes from a song sung by a guy who drank with a girl who slept with another girl who heard her daddy's slave humming the Moonlight Sonata mixed with some Gregorian chant. It is timeless.

  • @arflar Type in "CHRISTIAN ANDERS - THE HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN." Now THAT I call a PERFORMANCE!!!

  • "There is a house in New Orleans. They call the Rising Sun."

Kinda ironic that they did this song in New Orleans. LOL!

  • thats why they sang it

  • That was awesome; this song truly proves why Duran Duran is the greatest band of all time. Even better than the original!

  • Well done Duran Duran, what a fab version!

  • i love it !! thanks for post this !

  • i kinda like this... its actually a good cover, and i dont even like duran duran

  • they Duran-ified it! hahaha nicely done.

  • ABSOLUTELY LOVELY!

  • I have been listening to Duran Duran since 1981 - before most in the USA One day they will get the notoriety they deserve for being brilliant composers and musicians

    This is spectacular!

  • Yay... saw them in Cologne on June 17th 2008, they played this song, too... Really cool! :D

  • I've never really liked cover-versions. They generally don't measure up to the original. But this is beautiful. I love it!

  • brilliant! just....brilliant!!!!

  • So beautiful...

  • ive never even heard of these guys, but this was great! i think the vocals in this version are the best ive ever heard

  • not a fan but this is actually pretty good

  • these boys are true music makers and they

    always where!!!!!!

simon is just one of a kind and he will always

be the number one for me!!!

i am a fan sinds 1984 en will see them june 19

    in Amsterdam

  • I was standing about 10 feet in front of Simon in the crowd! This was shot on Halloween / Voo-Doo Festival in New Orleans. It was a truly brilliant show....

  • Where was this?

  • i love their version of this song, and that's saying something, i normally can't stand covers!

  • BRILLIANT!

  • These men will always be a fave of mine. Thanks so much for posting this. I love this song...never expected to see them cover it--again much thanks!!

  • muy bueno

  • EXCELLENT!

  • Life has been good for the Durans.

  • Fantastic!!Again!!I could see this video for the entire day.Love DD

    Ciao a tutti

  • best in the world D.D.

  • Great,Simon is fantastic with a great voice.Singing live with no digital support or studio help, like the new singers ,is real music.

  • Fantastic! Duran Duran rule

  • i love simon's voice!!!!!!!

  • With Simon's voice and Duran Duran's talent, they can take any song and make it amazing! And a special thank you to Simon for wearing such tight jeans. Yum!

  • this song must be the most covered of all times. this is one of my favourites versions, love dd

  • very great song i like it

  • I love The Animals version heck they were amazing looking in retrospect, but this was cool too

  • wow, never saw this before... way cool

a great song all around no matter who sings it.

  • This was a GREAT show. One of my fave bands in one of my all time fave cities.

  • That was cute,,,but NOT as cute as John Taylor!!@

  • DD did a great rendition of this song. I'd love to hear Tori do this. My mom did a version of this back in the eighties, and it makes more sense to me from a woman's perspective.

  • Super performance

  • If you want to know who wrote the song, look it up on wiki. It wasn't ANY of the people everyone claims it was.

This song belongs to the world. It belongs to lovers of blues and folk, and anyone who wants to tip their hat to good music.

Duran are having fun with it, and I bet they're doing it in New Orleands (just a guess tho). Respect.

  • The Animals

  • wrong answer. Guess again! (or look it up like I suggested in the firstplace)

  • No one really knows where it came from.

  • Allmanic singers

    in 1936

The version of the animals is the famous version, and the best version in me eyes (or eares)

  • DURAN RULES!

  • This is AWESOME! Thanks for posting this :)

  • duran duran ROCKS!!

  • Thanks for posting this. (good vid too!) A friend of mind heard them rehearsing this before a show that they didn't play the song in. I guess they were going to play it in the next show they were heading too. But anyway, to be honest, I love the boys, and I love the cover, but they just don't do a very good job here. Sorry Guys. It looks like J. Taylor was really struggling with the bass line. Good effort though boys!

  • I actually heard on NPR recently (in an interview with a fellow who just wrote a book about the origins of the song... there was actually a recording of a woman earlier than Clarence Ashley singing.. and its evolution through rock history) and while they were building some new big something in New Orleans recently, they unearthed, and this of course is in an old part of town, a sign of The Rising Sun Hotel and also found things like pots of old makeup. Pretty interesting!

  • DD rocks always! Awesome version!!! Thanks!!

  • "The House of the Rising Sun" is actually not about a brothel. The maximum security prison just on the outskirts of NO,La. is called "the Rising Sun" because it's the easternmost edge of Louisiana and sees the sun rise before any other part of the state. The popular version by The Animals left out one key part... he kills his gambling alcoholic father because he beat his mother and was sent to "The Rising Sun." Hence the line, "to wear that ball and chain." Just thought I'd clear that up.

  • Thanks for clearing that up, that story actually makes a lot more sense. The song always sounded more like a story where hope was lost and someone was walking into their own personal Hell.

  • I think the only detail you may have missed is that said prison is a women's only prison.

There's some discrepency about the gender of the original storyteller... but i think it makes more sense as a woman still

  • new orleans also used to have a bar name that this is about a drunk

  • House of the rising sun was written about a brothel, the oldest version can be traced back to Clarence Ashley who sang it in early 30's, its an old folk song so no one knows who wrote it but the animals do get alot of praise for their "Arrangement" of the song. One of the biggest changes they made was basing the lyrics on " A poor boy" whereas in the original its about a prostitute in a brothel ^^

  • Can't help but scream seeing your teenie idols still perform ! They're awesome, no matter what !

    DD forever !

  • cool....................................

  • Thanks so much for posting. Awesome version!

  • Not heard them do this before! Thank you!

  • Wow! Great version of a classic song. Love the Duran spin on it. Simon's vocal is awesome.

  • love this song

  • lmao sa7733...old macdonald... simon could sing abc's and look sexy in doing so as well!

  • duran duran have always kicked ass. now nearing my 40's it's great to see something i haven't from the dd

  • Simon could sing old macdonald and it'd sound good

  • right on. Looking fit as well.

  • wow...i still like nina simones version the best but this was up there. good stuff.
