  • Son of a bitch! - lols :)

  • So honest and sincere. Amazing poet and songwriter AND performer. I love her.

  • There is no one like Lucinda. Her songwriting is simple, direct and real. She writes about the same things that all songwriters do, she just does in a way that is completely original and makes all the themes sound fresh and new. And her voice of 2 parts honey 3 parts bourbon drips with more raw emotional intensity than any artist I have encountered in decades. Lucinda Williams has it, she will leave a stamp on music history that will be immortal.

  • Great song. Great artist. Very, very bad guitar tech!

  • She's so genuine, real and a unique talent. Love her music and lyrics--she sings about life with a roughness and tenderness I love!

  • To the haters. Lucinda has been in the bussiness for more than 30 years going back to her Happy Woman Blues album and many artist would do covers of her music and she would often write songs and she always had her own version. I've met Lucinda in 97 when she was helping my friend Joy Lynn White get her career restarted. She's a team player with the music establishment. I seen her live shows. She is a definitive professional.

  • Passionate Kisses for you RAHM. I LOVE YOU.

  • Lucinda is an amazing artist. I have seen many other artists including rock and roll legend Rod Steward forget the lyrics to MAGGIE MAY... who cares. It makes the moment all the more special. She is a human and is allowed to get nervous and mess up. :D Love you all.

  • For all those "people" (I prefer to not qualify them as one of our own), I'd love to see you out on the road 11 months or sometimes more, performing at the top of your game. So she messed up a bit...it's her song, no. 1, and she really couldn't give a rip what you think. Neither do any of us who love the music she creates. The woman is a genius and a lady~~let me know when you make the top 40 of all the female country singers ever placed on this earth. How long will you last?

  • yes it was Johnnytastetest. neils theme album and concert. I remember a few fans screaming out during and between every song for older Neil stuff completely oblivious to the theatrical stage performance going on along with each song. neil finally yelled out "shut up Asshole, I hear you. We'll get to the older stuff later. I've seen neil several times over the past 20 years and RARELY heard him speak> !!!!!! very classic.

  • I saw Lucinda for the 1st time open for Neil Young several years back and was blown away by her performance. had never even heard of her prior to that and am now a huge fan. this chick writes great songs and rocks and has a great band

  • @seapro17 - Did that happen to be on the Greendale tour?

Your comment made me remember that I saw a female singer open for him too, and then I was like, "Hmmph, maybe that was her!"

  • Saw this amazing musician 3 years ago in Burlington, Vt. She was a mess...totally disconnected, bitched out her guitar tech to the point that he made a dunce cap out of paper....but she was incredible. You never know what you're going to get with a Lucinda Williams show....could be a mess, could be brilliant, but will always be a fantastic event.

  • Capo on the 2nd fret baby...never mind!!!!...youre great..love ye!!!

    Tks 4 th great upload.

    Have a nice day

    Vanu.

  • What a pro! A lesson to all artists on how to recover brilliantly. Thanks for the lesson. Rock on Lucinda!

  • She's very endearing. It's OK if some people can't appreciate a performance like this one. She's not geared for Lawrence Welk

  • yeah your right she is a genius i don't about the f-ing part of that genius ..one screw up was that a pun...oh well she is really great for a woman/ musician/ singer .it's hard to find good talent these days for sure especially in a womans body..just kidding trying to provoke you to a little anger..that is not hard it seems to do so don't take things so serious.don't you know that most people on you tube just like to get a rise out of people.carry on

  • @pearlepotamus I don't agree. I've heard MCC's version, and it's no where near as good as this live messy version. It's the difference between heart and soul versus mind. Lucinda is pure heart and soul.

  • Comment removed

  • She is great, and honest, and totally brilliant. I love this clip

  • Funny as crap, I thought I was the only one that did that Luci

  • This is a masterclass in recovering from a simple mistake - I just love this song and her performance ................love every minute

  • Any of you Lucinda haters have no idea what you're talkin' about !!! so go back to your television world and shut the fuck up !!!!

  • You better believe she get's paid, as she wrote this song! Everytime you here it (performed by anyone) she's making bank. She's a freakin' beautiful, genius song-writer singer/songwriter/performer. Nothing but respect for this woman!

  • I love this song and this artist. I have not heard her much and she is great! viewpoints3

  • I love her naturalness!! She is a great writer and performer. Nothing slick or pop about her. Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • brilliant

  • Warts and all...I love it !

  • @rafhenlow TIME Magazine named her the world's greatest living songwriter.

She wrote this one. Listen to Are You Alright?. Beautiful beautiful intimate songs.

  • Lucinda, amazing.

  • like a soccer mom trying to be a rocker..if you ask me..but who's asking

  • Lucinda wrote this song. MCC covered it brilliantly. But it is Lucinda's as anyone who hears this can see.

  • @rafhenlow You're right MCC has nothing to fear. Because her talent is no where near as gifted as Lucinda Williams. Anyone that knows about music from the heart and not the head, knows this is a fantastic performance. You don't need to hit every note on the head like a robot to be perfect. This is honest and from deep within,

  • @Snowman999 In that case I had better start making a living trying to sing. I can sing from the heart. no-one wants to hear it though. Actually I can sing, bass/baritone. I know what I can manage & what I can't. I still say that is bad, I wiped it off my playlist, BUT, if you like it?, 'good on yer sport'.

  • @rafhenlow

really how in the world did she ever make it as far as she did. my neighbors band is so much better.what's up with this..you tell me

  • @plasticworlds

    Because she's brilliant. That's why.

  • @plasticworlds This sounds like a Karaoke night, too much to drink & friends have convinced you that you can sing, or an early Xfactor entry. As the saying goes, "You can fool some of the people all the time."

  • @rafhenlow

    Yeah, keep dreaming.

  • @Snowman999 keep dreaming what?

  • @rafhenlow I agree... bad karaoke or realllly bad guitar hero-lmao

    TOTAL MCC fan!

  • @plasticworlds Hey!!!Lucinda is a fucking genius and if you go on one screw up than your lame Lucinda wrote this fuckin song and MCC owes Lucinda a dept of gratitude.

  • @rafhenlow WOW- how bad is this? VERY... she has to keep looking at the sheet of paper to know the words

I'ts my right to NOT like this!!! MCC has no worries-lmao

  • @rafhenlow: Lucinda Williams wrote the song, therefore Mary Chapin Carpenter should be honored that she had the opportunity to create a great version of her own.

  • @rafhenlow I don't think Lucinda owes MCC a single dime for this song as Lucinda wrote this one.

  • @edditude09 Your point being? A bad version is a bad version whether you wrote the song or not. There are plenty of songwriters who cannot carry a note I should imagine. Personal preference?, MCC, & plenty on these pages agree, BUT, it is an oppinion, mine, you are entitled to yours.

  • @rafhenlow Here's where you're mistaken. You're comparing this live version against MCC recorded version. How do you do that and expect to be taken seriously? Put on Lucinda's recorded version, you know the one that MCC listened to and said "I want to cover that tune" and then compare. That's a personal preference. That's equal. Comparing 99% of live versions to recorded ones is not too bright to say the least.

  • @Snowman999 I have not seen MCC nor Lucinda sing live, but, if Lucinda cannot sing better than this, other than in a studio with all the 'bells & whistles' available to make her sound o.k., I reckon she should stick to recording only!! I have seen artists perform live. Don Mclean, Howard Keel, Tom Paxton, Cliff Richard, (who sounds as bad live as he does on records, ie, the same), who have all sounded great live. All I can say is that I would not pay to see Lucinda. Try De Burgh live concerts!!

  • @rafhenlow Well everyone is entitled to their opinion. I've seen her dozens of times and Lucinda fans go back time and again.

Oh, and why did she have the lyric sheet? Because she was playing a full week of sold out shows in NYC where she was performing a single complete album from start to finish. She wasn't looking at them, she had them, just in case. Lou Reed, Dolly Parton and many other superstars use them. They're not 20 anymore.

  • @Snowman999 Don't seem to remember mentioning lyric sheets, just that she killed her own song. People go to see Cliff Richard over & over again, means nothing. They also buy Cheryl Cole records, & she cannot sing live either. So again, your point being?! Just in passing, I don't remember leaving little 'digs' about your choices, I am quite bright, really.

  • how bad is this! Mary Chapin Carpenter, you have nothing to fear.

  • She took someone's mistake and turned it into an utter TRIUMPH! Not only did she save it, but used to to share a piece of herself with her audience. AWESOME performer and fabulous songwriter!

    You ROCK LU!!!

  • haha - i can so realte to this - and she is one cooollll woman!

  • It takes guts to hit wrong key, bitch a bit and come back composed and slay the shit outta the demon who screwed her !! Right on Lucinda !!!!

  • Oh, Lucinda!!! Darling we love everything you do. You should have all that you expect. All Passionate Kisses, Passionate Kisses from Me!

  • "Son of a BITCH! SHIT!" Ha ha!

    LOVED it! Lucinda rocks!!

  • Love you Lucinda, Love this song.

  • I love her cursing! She rocks! Love her

  • Comment removed

  • Well, I can see what happened. She obviously (almost accidentally typed "obliviously" ha!) had her guitar tuned DOWN, so the fact that this song is in the simple key of D, is throwing her because her capo is in the wrong place. She normally wouldn't need the capo, but since it's tuned down, the capo is required, and she forgot where to put it. Understandable, but so embarrassing. BEEN THERE honey! She's still the queen. Can't undo that.

  • @ClarenceCenter I can't imagine what it must be like performing "on the road". It's got to really wear you down after a while. Gotta be frustrating when your entrance starts out like that! She's so raw and down to earth which is why her fans (myself included) love her.

  • I love you, Lucinda. Wonderful song.

  • Love it.. everyone deserves it ..

  • My favorite Lucinda Williams song. The music video was the only L. Williams one I got to put on Videowave

  • Great artist, good sense of humor too!!

  • Watch that capo!

    Great tune!

  • A very human moment. This is great!

  • It's Different But I Really Like It! She's Funny! I Like Her! lol

  • great !

    lucinda !

  • This actually is one of her better moments. She is awesome but if you see her live you never know what to expect. I have seen her 7 times. I would say she is one of my all time favorite artists, but yes, obviously a little substance abuse problem there.

  • i love her. she is so real...thanks for posting this video

  • Lucinda breaks my heart everytime. Can't let go.

  • Love you LW, but if you cannot remember the words or the key, it's time to put he bottle down :)

  • what album is this on?? I have the Mary Chapin Carpenter version.

  • I think it's just called Lucinda Williams. It's one of her best. It also has my favorite Side of the Road.

  • There is only the Lucinda version and the rest are covers and Snowman is spot on. It is on her debut and an EP. She is fun to watch and many people have benefited her songwriting.

  • @MissCaptainWeird Lucinda wrote this song in the 80's. Unfortunately her life's been a lot of ups & downs & this was one of the latter times. The original version on her early album is outstanding & relates a happy lilting voice Lucinda full of a young lady's hopes & dreams. Too bad life rarely lives up to those, especially wehn lived in the limelight.

  • hahaha I love her!!

  • Wow. Learn something about music before posting.

  • She is one of the most talented Singer/ Songwriters out there. She is a human being and has bad moments like everyone. She also has a very LARGE following!

  • I must admit this is a far cry (no pun intended) from "world without tears"...

  • Some have obviously nevver been in the prscence of a very shy genius

  • Some people just want to hear the record note for note live. Which is the exact opposite of what you want from a live performance.

  • This is not a good performance...it's a GREAT one. Who else can put it on the line like Lucinda...WOW...I LOVE this performance. AND the outfit is WONDERFUL.

  • you better say ...Lucy is being very obviously understated ... just being able to throw off the mistake & the show must go on they say ---

    I Love Lucy

  • She's worn better outfits. In don't like the swimsuit look, not for a concert, at least.

    Flame away.

  • Mary chapin who? I've seen LW live 5 times and my knees melt every time she sings this.

  • LW reminds me of the first women serial killer, Eileen Wormas if she (Wormas) had made it into music that is how she would have been, but instead EW got the musical electric chair.

I know LW is real good, but talk about street

and a bar voice with bar gear on which is why she is probably loved.

i'm in her corner though i love the song

both by LW & MCC great song!!!

  • One of the few good things abut turning forty is that one can start to look at women like Lucinda Williams as the epitome of hot.

I was already used to pining for French actresses who would not see forty five again but Lucinda has opened up a whole new vista for me.

  • also the best thing about turning 56 same same - HOTTY Baby

  • Gotta love her... have you seen her on her recent tour? Totally rocked Baltimore, celebrating her anniversary. It was a history of Lucinda night. Wonderful.

  • She sounds like a female version of Tom Petty.

  • Lucinda is brilliantly raw and a great song writer but i still prefer the MCC cover.

  • Great Song. Great Performer. Magnificent Comeback.

    Peace,

    Spang

  • i love this song so much x

  • I have such a crush on this lady. Then again I have a crush on Emmy Lou also. Is it wrong for a 40 year old guy to have a school boy crush on women with guitars?

Either way, one of my top albums of all time is Lucinda at the Fillmore. Incredible stuff. Ive been a long time fan.

  • You and me both, and I'm 57

  • I love chicks with guitars!!! check out sheryl crow!

  • i am 38 i also have a crush on this girl how cantcha

  • Monk - Plenty of more conventional, so to speak, performances here from Lucinda. There's music from a VH1 show & Austin City Limit shows (she's done a few of those) that will show you all need to know about her live abilities. i still like this raw performance (to each his own) But i think it would be worth your while to check out some of her other stuff. She really is (as Letterman said earlier this year) The Amaaaazingly talented Lucinda williams!!! Peace.

  • Where is the allure in letting everyone know you hate something? this woman and her band are brilliant!

  • surprised by your comments Monkberry50 - i figured you would just tell me to go bleep myself. I assumed you were one of those people who goes to videos of artists they don't like just to say bad things (its amazing how many people there are) I'll give you credit for responding with some class and just chalk up your comments to simple sincere critisism. Good luck to you and your group.

  • Rldraw... thank you... I didnt know Lucinda from Adam's housecat til my band wanted to cover this song. ( " Blue" is a good song ) I dont blindly "hate" any artist nor blindly love them. just that I cringe when I hear off tune guitars and off key singing, maybe she just had a bad day. pisses me off when I see an artist give a half assed effort, shows contempt for the audience. our acoustic band is called JERICHO DITCH and we'll be on U-tube soon. our CD of originals out next week.

  • Monkberry50 - Looks like you've been "in the biz" about as long as Lucinda. I'm curious - where are all your 100,000+ viewed songs on YOUTUBE? Lulu's got a bunch of 'em. I can't wait to hear back from you so we can all check them out!

  • rldraw... I only remarked on this particular version (which sux) ... I have a day career...our youtube efforts are on the way, we only formed 6 months ago, though we all have decades of live experience. I'm a huge Dylan fan but I know some of his live performances are terrible. I hate to see people mangle a good song, even if its the composer. I understand the appeal of a raw performance, but as Dylan said, when somethin's not right.... its wrong.

  • that was a terrible rendition.... off key singing and a tinny sounding guitar... havent heard her studio version, I hope she took the time to get it right, coz this just plain sucks.

  • You need to clean your ears out if you thought this sucked.

  • compare this to Chapin Carpenter... who knocked it out of the park.... Shouldnt I have this ? she should have singing lessons.... my eardrums are gonna sue for assault.

  • You think music lies within hitting the "proper" notes all the time. I'm sure you think Whitney Houston's version of I Will Always Loves You kicks the crap out of Dolly Parton's. Well, anyone who knows ANYTHING about music, REAL music knows that's not true. It's the truth in the delivery. Lucinda delivers it with the passion it deserves. Learn about music before knocking it's icons. Carpenter's recorded version is fine, and I'm sure she does a nice job live. Lucinda's is REAL and 10000% art.

  • if art is singing off key then I have to agree... by that measure then my 6 year old is an artist.... but I expect some degree of competence from artists... this particular performance is a turd, all I'm sayin... bad guitar playing as well... Lucinda is REAL.... REAL BAD.

  • It's okay, everyone is allowed to be wrong, and you are wrong.

  • Let me help you out.... check out KT Tunstall on youtube... song > Mineature Disasters... THATS how you strum a guitar and actually sing in the same key.

BTW... my acoustic band plans to cover Passionate Kisses which is why I checked youtube to begin with. I been appearing live for 35 years, including TV and CDs... difference > OUR female singer can stay on key. but yer right, art is in the eye of the beholder.

  • One last thing, you NEVER compare a recorded version (which you did) with a live version EVER! Lucinda has quite a few fans, many who love this version. Why? Because it's raw and powerful. Is it perfect? No. But, it doesn't have to be to be great. It has to have heart. Oh and KT Tunstall has no heart. She's a one hit wonder. But, that's fine. That's one more hit then I'll ever have.

  • snow ... live versions are stand alone, I get that, but here she appears under the influence, someone has to help her play in the right key ! can you have heart and still sing on key ? it must be nice to have fans who dont care if you turn in a half assed performance. Elvis once said he could release a single w/ 2 minutes of silence and his fans would still buy it. its a sign of contempt for the audience. too much vodka has born many a "raw" performance.

  • I've been to more shows then most people and I've heard songs mangled by the artists that I love. This is not one of them. There's a difference between singing off-key/sucking, and singing off-key with heart. There's a huge difference. The thing is, to be able to recognize it. This video has over 103 thousand hits, because it's great. I could have put up any of the songs from that performance and they'd be great. But, I chose this one, because it's so personal. human and brilliant.

  • Off key with heart ? did you really say that ? what you claim to "recognize" is nothing but fan loyalty. Fan being short for fanatic. Rabid Dylan fans would watch him fart into the mike and call it brilliant. BTW, I was one of those 103 k hits, that dont mean I thought it was brilliant, or even worthy of karaoke night at the Tick Tock Inn. try not to take it personally. just my opinion about this particular performance .... which bites.

  • I absolutely said that. It's not loyalty or fanaticism. Once in PA Lucinda sucked. It was "What the hell was that?" awful. This was not one of those nights. Unfortunately, you can't see that. It's a shame because you're a musician. Which means you probably make boring pitch perfect music. Which equals muzak. Playing an instrument is a technicality. Heart is what sells a song. That's not being personal, but honest.

  • @Monkberry50 KT's black horse cherry tree sounds like the vocal riff in Pointer Sisters Neutron Dance

  • @Snowman999 I just read through your discussion with Monk. First of all let me say that I believe Lucinda is a FANTASTIC songwriter. As far as a performer I have heard her studio material and it is good but not great. As for this performance I have to agree with Monk that she was drunk and performed very poorly but I still enjoyed it somewhat. I like the proof that it was live and the talking to the audience. I would like to hear LW do this one not drunk and on key to see how good it might be.

  • Fantastic! Pefectionism on display.

    git it right girl! LOL!

  • Going To See Her 2nite at Cambridge Folk Sunday and I'm gonna meet her!

  • If you wait long enough (till all her equipment is packed up and ready to go, you will. She's extremely nice, cordial and will sign most anything.

    ENJOY THE SHOW!

  • I just waited out back (depending on where she is playing) and when she came out she always took the time to sign and take pics with her fans

  • Comment removed

  • I love Lucinda she takes time at the end of most of her shows to sign autographs for her fans (I met her and got my pic taken with her a couple times) ... she appreciates us all.... I've seen her 5 times in concert and every time it was GREAT!!!!!

  • how?? The last time I saw her she left right away. What do you have to do to get an autograph??

  • love her....she's a she-ro.

  • I would so love to get drunk and screw up some guitar chords with this beautiful woman.

  • Wouldn't we all.

  • No.

  • I love that she is not afraid to screw up and turn into one of the best parts of the show because she lets the audience connect with her. That happened the last time I saw her too.

  • haha Lucinda is so cool. her entrance was human, it was just fine!

  • Folks, both LW and MCC are great. What are you carping about? So what if MCC did a great cover of a great song by Lucinda? How many other great artists have done great covers by great writers? This is a raw live version, which gives makes my arm hairs tingle just to listen to the passion she wants. Any takers, or is her passion too raw? Now listen to MCC's version posted by BRod - another great live version.

  • Net-net, give Lucinda her due for writing this great song. Then give both artists their due for different, but great interpretations. And stop comparing all the time, for crying out loud!

  • Lucinda wrote this song. MCC covered it. Lucinda is the original!

  • Not just a good singer, a BRILLIANT singer.

  • Dunno - but to me Lucinda W is the real deal and blows the likes of MCC out of the water. Have seen her live twice and the second gig was truly brilliant. She is raw and she is human and her best songs have a timeless quality ("Out of Touch"). A true genius and how rare is that?

  • Great Mary Chapin Carpenter cover!

    RockDoc

  • Cover?? This is the ORIGINAL - and best!!

  • I stand corrected. I still like the MCC version better. BTW, what has happened to her? She has really been less visible in the last few years.

    RockDoc

  • If you're asking about MCC she's been ill.

  • And she can't write her own songs?

  • Are you kidding me? She WROTE this song. Mary Chapin Carpenter and others covered it.

  • I know she wrote it. I was being sarcastic. Love Lucinda!

  • I got to hang out with Lucinda when she did some duets with Joy Lynn White on her comeback concert in Nashville.

  • priceless

  • Great. I wish she could come to Sweden..

  • Jag också, Malmö eller?

  • LU is a great songtwriter and a great free spirit .long may she run!!!

  • oh yeah, MCC....lol WHAT A TOOL!!! She had 1 hit (that she couldn't have had without Lu) If you want to listen to slick, mistake free covers then stay home in your mamma's basement and listen to a studio cut from the album, YOU JERKOFF!!!

  • Who's this?? This is Lucinda Williams, one of the greatest singer/songwriters of our time. Go buy the CD "Sweet Old World", listen to it, and then come back and apologize.

    Asshole.

  • ouch! manners!

  • Did you listen to the entire video or just the first 2 mins? She starts out with her capo on the wrong fret and completely screws up the song by singing it in the wrong key. The fact that her fans love her anyway is the point of the video. She looks tired and maybe a little bit drunk but she is still awesome. Its happened to everyone who has ever performed live. Very few people can get away with it like this. She has earned the right to make a few mistakes. She is incredible.

  • whoops didn't mean the either part

  • Lucinda wrote it. It appears on her third album, released in '88.

  • Yea, as otehrs said, its absolutely Lucinda's but made "famous" by Mary Chapin Carpenter. Back in the early 90's, I recall hearing Lucinda saying she bought a house from Mary covering that song ha ha.

  • One of the greatest song writers ever! I love Lu's voice, too... even when she 'screws up' she can't do anything wrong!

I love to go see her live... especially when she has to look in her notebook at the next song she's going to do... I can't even imagine what it must be like to have written so many songs, that you have to remind yourself of the words! I love Lucinda!

  • I've been going to shows since the 70s. There's many artists who need to look at lyrics while singing. Lou Reed, Dolly Parton, Nina Hagen are three off the top of my head. Dolly forgot the words to Jingle Bells once. It was classic.

  • I never get tired of hearing Lucinda sing. She's one of the greats.

  • Just Great !!

  • This is a great song by a great lady. This made me laugh, she has a good sense of humor.
