I am an adult with autism and I have a lot of trouble with the dentist. From the rubbery gloves to the smell of the gloves and the metal instruments is just too much to process at once. I also feel helpless and out of control. I'm MUCH calmer if a dentist puts up a mirror so I can watch what he's doing rather than constantly bracing for pain. And don't start me on the whine of the drill...ugh!
@WeirdGirlCyndi You must understand there are people who not influenced by any mental difficulty we fear the dentist, I do not think that you just do not feel anesthesia for pain
@MAVI5220 Please reread what I said. I'm calmer if I can see what he's doing. Logically I know there won't be pain with numbing stuff in my mouth, but my brain and imagination act up and it's almost worse than having nothing at all. If I can see it, I feel a sense of control and I don't panic.
It is true that sometimes a severely autistic person requires general anesthesia...take a look at my son under kgaccount and you'll see ANOTHER SIDE OF AUTISM that is quite unlike what is shown here.......this child, in fact, is responding to direction...NOT all autistics respond to verbal instruction, no matter how many times you say it...
If you want to learn more about curing autism i found an amazing product called "PCA-RX" it acually reverses the affect of the mercury in vaccines and restores kids back to somewhat normal thinking ability! its worth doing some research on.
wow this seems to be genuinely effective as a behavior modification schedule for this procedure, the only downside is that it seems very time consuming to have to continuously reinforce desired behaviors with continuous trials, I bet this visit lasted well over three hours (can you tell I'm a psych major?). It seems like this would be better than sedating the kids but I wonder if it is really feasible in a medical environment.
I was watching this and crying, because my son will have to go thru this, and I just pray that we can find a dentist who has so much compassion and patience.
I am pleasantly surprised to see this dentist work with Autistic children with so much diligence and compassion. He should receive some kind of an award! Please tell that dentist for me that I am so proud of him and that I think he is awesome!!! Two thumbs up!!!

For those wanting to find dentists who work with autistic children, look for a pediatric dentist. Many general dentists get little training in pediatric dentistry in school, let alone experience with special needs children.
Thanks for the info. In Texas everything is based on income. The Univ of Texas Health Science Center charges 70.00 just for an exam. The insurance plan we have Detal Dental is what the state uses as well, so the benefits and the copayments are the same. Hopefully someday we will have the funds to cover dental. My husband is retired disabled military and cannot work.
Most dentists and dental assistants will not waste their time being this good to an autistic child. I had been advised to bring my child to a psych because he wasn't keeping his teeth clean enough. I found another dentist. They were patient, but of course, more expensive.
I found this very informative and a practical way to introduce the dentist to the autistic child. Now all I have to do is find a dentist who knows how to do this in MA.
I wish I could take my autistic children to a dentist. But we don't have a good dental care policy, cheap PPO and the dentists aren't trained to help my kids. My kids would freak out at the dentist and need to be sedated before the dentist could touch them, they have alot of sensory issues. I wish we could afford to take them to a children's dentist, but we spend all our money on therapy.
In Illinois there is a state run program called Kid Care where every child gets health care free or based on family income. Also, children with disabilities usually qualify for monthly monetary SSI benefits through the U.S. Social Security Administration. If your child doesn't already have one please apply for your state's Department of Human Services (public aid) medical card. I believe that family income is not considered a factor with a child with a lifelong disability.
My children were getting dental care at the University of Illinois hospital dental clinic. Now they go to another hospital affiliated dental clinic which specializes in working with children with disablities. Good luck. Don't give up. Your child has rights. In Illinois children get more medical, dental and optical services than adults so it is worth finding out what benefits are available through your state.
What patience and kindness this dentist has.I wish there were more professionals out there that understood that things like this are quite scary to our children. He was very calm, and gentle ..praising this little boy every single step of the way. This needs to be a part of every dentists training before they graduate.

@kgaccount
They should just taser them that will get them cooperating fast! Pain is the greatest teacher and the only ones kids seem to learn...
brassmonkeyjew 1 year ago
@brassmonkeyjew I strongly agree! they could also taser an autistic kid just for fun

They're not worth it. Just strap them down or knock them silly with your fist.

The first child in this video looks like one of my second-cousins in Illinois. Except my second-cousin is not autistic like the boy in the video.

Me too. Seeing this video makes me go back to the (childhood) days I had to go to the doctor at Harvard Vanguard for check-ups.
