I grew up in South Florida - Ft Lauderdale mostly, but Miami too. The Hispanic community is really conservative at times, especially when it comes to LGBT. My ex-gf is Venezuelan and one time her mom told her, "I'd rather you be a nun than a marimacho (lesbian)." I think she still hasn't come out to her family and she's 30 now.
Thanks for sharing. i grew up in miami florida too, and had a similar situation. being cuban you hear all the time how important family is and when you come out because being gay is so backwards for cubans its like the end of the world.
but having such a strong sense of family they always come around and try to see thins differently.
I love your father for standing up for you, and the sub-culture actually with no personal experience other than his love for you. You must be very special. Many fathers would have said nothing.
@yescandles yes, it's a very common thing in latin culture, the men are very manly and tough. and the woman are the ones that take care of the family and cook and clean and stuff..
Originally from Iowa, I spent 20yrs in the military. When I retired, I had no family left in Iowa, so I moved near my sister, in central Florida, (about 2 hours west of Orlando). I had these visions of Florida be really cool, open minded, LGBT friendly, and cosmopolitan, but in reality, Florida's mindset, (at least where I live) is basically "Southern Georgia"!
@eddieschirm haha!!! This is so true, Im from Jacksonville, and I moved to LA 4 years ago, I CONSTANTLY have to tell people, think of Northern Florida, as Southern Georgia and not Miami! Orlando and Miami are more open minded
@eddieschirm Orlando is probably as far south as the South goes. It's South Florida - Ft Lauderdale, Palm Beach, some parts of Miami, and now Tampa, that is open-minded.

You said women are providers of the family?

I don't think people realize what a backward state Florida is. Gay's can't adopt children their and you can be fired because you're gay. Crazy.

@lcowles Pretty sure the adoption law either was overturned, or Governor Christie chose not to defend it a couple of years ago.

He's cute. His boss called him the "F" word? In the workplace! I would soooo quit.
When I came out I felt relieved that I had finally came out the closet and a weight had be lifted off my shoulders.
I'm glad that my mom accepts me and loves me so much now. It was tough when I came out but given time were closer then ever.
