A great cover as always. Radiohead is really missing out by not turning this one into a fully-produced song. Sooo good. Although, there is something charming about a solo acoustic song by Thom.
@yasseford Jonny used the melodies from the song in his soundtrack for Norwegian Wood. I doubt we'll ever see the radiohead version unless we spread the word and start a campaign or something... (Hence I am commenting a lot about this)
'kay hello! i have been watching all your tutorial and i feel so dumb because everyone easily get it and i dont. idk is it my brain or my guitar that is out of tune. but maybe im just blind without chord.. but you are awesome mate, i wish you get to meet radiohead. i really love it. especially this..... i love this song a lot. thank you so much, i'll study harder XD
Hey thanks alot Warren for posting this, you have a great voice and this is one of the best covers I've heard! One quick question (might be kind of dumb) but in Gm do I pluck the open G and 11B string at the same time or is that just a typo?
Is Gm - x 10 x 0 11 x supposed to be Gm - x 10 x X 11 x? Or Have I got it all wrong?
You pluck the open 3G string whenever you feel like adding a little body to the chord... that's what I think Thom is doing. You hear the open string from time to time, and there is no real discernable pattern (unlike the Cm and Cm5).
i've never liked a radiohead cover before, but this is incredible. you've kept the essence of the original with just enough of your own touch. i can't wait to see what he does with this song
I'm just wondering why you called the chord 8xx08x a Cm5 (instead of C5)? There is no third in it, I thought a power chord doesn't have any major/minor quality.
Also, why the 7x07xx is a G/B and not a simple Bm? There is no G in here?
Sorry if these are stupid questions, I just start to learn theory, it's not that simple. :)
Cm5 is my own way of implying tonality (for interpretation). meaning... if you came up with a harmony or another instrumental part to go along with it, the Eb in C minor and NOT the E in C major would work.
And in my mind it's a G/B for the same reason... the two notes in the chord imply a G in first inversion if you look at the first time the G/B occurs (7x008x).
It's all about the tonality, and implications when it comes to interpretation.
Very interesting, how did you learned all that? With a professor? Or do you have some good book/website to advise to further my knowledge on the music theory?
I try to think about how music theory applies to every song I figure out, partly because I am pretty analytical by nature and also because I teach music. I had extensive music theory and ear training when I was younger. I can't point you towards any specific resource... just continue what you're doing and thinking about the essence of the song's harmony.
It doesnt matter at all to this song cause you made it your own,but you do need work on your falsetto, also you sound like youre trying to keep it down?
yeah i don't normally sing in head voice but alas, thom does a LOT. i did this real late and yeah, i have neighbors so i was trying to keep it down. haha
Lyric. This dance, this dance Is like a weapon, like a weapon Of self defense, of self defense Against the present, against the present "Present Tense" I won't get heavy, don't get heavy Keep it light and, keep it moving I am doing, no harm As my world comes crashing down I am dancing, freaking out Deaf, dumb, and blind
Awesome Warren, but i´m not understand the difference beetween Gm (low) and Gm (high). IN Tab the key from Gm (low) is - 3 x 0 3 x x. But from Gm (High)??
I may have caught another mistake. At the end of the Interlude and twice in Chorus 2, you say to play the high F, but the actual tab you play in the song is x8xx10x.
Thanks... I just added that to the tab. Apparently there are five variations on F... haha. Ultimately, trying to simplify music in numbers and stuff is always going to feel incomplete...
Thank you so much! I'm just learning guitar and I use your tutorials all the time! I wish you were in Portland! I really wanted to learn this and you have a tutorial up already! Your great!
You are correct in saying sus4. I like noting that it's a minor chord hidden underneath, however unnecessary. There are only two notes in the chord so technically even saying a sus4 is over-explaining, but I look at it like this: if you over-explain you show the intended harmonic content. This allows for more flexibility in interpretation without ruining the essence of the harmony. Thanks for your comment.
Woops, maybe I misspoke. I meant to say that music is really just relationships between sounds and silence, lows and highs, louds and softs... relationships. Not like... music is all about, "She broke my heart." Hahaha. You dig?
Haha not quite what I meant either. I mean technically, you can do whatever you want to. You could use the chord progression that sounds good or the chord progression that sounds like crap. You can make it sound like whatever you want it to, and either way it's yours.
nevermind, found the answer in the comments. this tutorial is utterly brilliant, thank you so much!

by the way, I think your voice fits very well with this song.
PJGR21 2 years ago
You've put up tutorials for nearly all of Radiohead's best guitar stuff. (And the tutorials you haven't put up are elsewhere on youtube.)
The only requests I think I can make are:
Go to Sleep and Thom's solo version of Nice Dream.
...but Nice Dream probably wouldn't be worth the time because the tabs on ultimate guitar are perfect, and the song is very straightforward.
other than those two... I guess branch away from Radiohead?
These are just my thoughts.

One quick question: can you really have a minor sus4 if you're dropping the 3rd? I usually just say sus4.
15FifteenMusic 2 years ago

warrenmusic 2 years ago
Gotcha. I can kinda see that the tonalities in going from a minor to a sus4 and a major to a sus4 really alter the sound.
Awesome cover man, you have great technique. Keep it up.
