  • thanks for uploading this! fabulous

  • i love how Raul and Barbara walk off with their arms round each other (:

  • "Enlightened" is the only word for it... I feel so enlightened now.

  • God I must say thank you for posting this, and I decide to buy the DVD now!!!!!

  • Thank you so much for uploading this! Absolutely phenominal.

  • Good performance, but the only thing that puzzles me a little about it -- was there supposed to be some significance to the cast members all playing musical instruments?

  • Lonny Price. Directed for television by.

Like everybody else connected with this stellar performance . . . sheer visual and technical genius.

    No wonder Sondheim loved this.

It's the ultimate lasting record of this musical theatre pinnacle.

  • 0:45-0:57 i just love Roberts catharsis at that part! like he's taking the biggest breath or breather of his entire life, like he finally feels free!

  • Sometimes I wonder if Bobby ever gets married, or if he stays single after the end. I hope he gets his wish.

I love this show to bits, and his production is brilliant. It's brutally honest yet deeply moving show that really makes you want to do something with your life and really live.

Ok, I have to stop typing now because I'm in tears. I love this thing so much.

  • @InspectorKaramazov From what I've read he committed suicide.

  • @ndrwmls10 Why would he do that? and where did you read that? I'm not believing it unless Sondheim or Furth himself says so somewhere. And even if they DO say that, I refuse to believe it.

  • amazing!

  • I want to watch it all again now :P

Amazing musical, I Love Sondheim ♥

  • Thank you so much for posting this, Billy. What a joy to be able to see such a brilliant production of this show!

  • Lonny Price directed for TV!!! When, oh when will there be a revival of "Merrily We Roll Along"?! Thanks for posting this, it's been on my Amazon wishlist forever, but I'm definitely buying the DVD now.

  • Thanks for posting! Raul and the rest of the cast were brilliant and Stephen Sondheim is a musical genius

  • The great thing about the ending is that it can be interpreted in so many ways.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I was in a production of this a few years ago and after seeing Side by Side by Sondheim last night wanted to watch it again.

And to recent posters: If you think it means a lot to you at 15, wait until you are 25...or 40....or 60. It will continue to reveal new things to you every time you see it. What I love about Sondheim.

Also, I don't think the end has anything to do with him committing suicide. I don't know where that idea got started....

  • @singactdance in one London production of Company he does commit suicide, so people who saw that version just might assume that that is what he does in all of the productions.

  • The ending is about the beginning of a new life. He doesn´t commit suicide. How did you get that idea?

  • @Jolanda27

According to an interview Sondheim gave, he saw a London production in which Bobby shoots himself in the final scene. To me, that completely kills the ending (no pun is intended).

  • In fact, i think being alive is his wish (to find somebody to crowd him with love, etc.) is his wish, and he blows out the candle to make it official

  • why would a COMEDY end with suicide?

the way i interpreted it was that he finally knows what he wants to do, what ever that may be, i thought of it as a new beggining in his life, if anything along those lines, not putting an end to it...

I just couldnt believe somebody writing a comedy and ending it with suicide, it way too far fetched

  • Incase anybodys wondering, the ending of him blowing out the candles is symbolism for him commiting suicide BUT of corse it is left off for you to dicide how you want to end the story.

This show is fantastic, I watch it weekly. Im most likley obsessed it seems. i did the song "Being Alive" and "Have I got a girl fro you" For my vocal exam and got a 94%. Thanks Sondheim your musicals are always the best.

  • I love this musical. I heard a song from it ages ago and found it boring. I think it was because it was too boring for me too "mature". But now I'm more grown up (15) I love this musical. Now i know it's sophistication and mature sense of humor is its charm. Raul Esparza is truly inspirational to a guy like me who wants to go into musical theater. This is now one of my favorite musicals of all time along with les miserables. I could quite easily watch this again. Sondheim is a genius

  • Thank you, Billy Cowles. You did the world a real and honest favor by posting these 14 videos. In the American musical theater, this has to be one of the most unique, personal and truly moving shows ever created and it's very important to show the world what musical theater in America can be at its finest. Thank you again.

  • im 15 and this has taught me so much.

  • that was completely amazing.

i'm DYING to see it live now.

i've had the soundtrack for a while, listened to it a couple times, but never really got into it.

but now that i've seen it i'm like OH MY GOD!

    lol.

i'm def gonna love you forever now though for posting this.

    xD

  • I just didn't want this to end. Such an amazing musical. :]

  • When I was little I found this show crude and boring.

Now that I'm older i feel enlightened

  • A Sondheim group in my city is doing this show & I'm seeing it tomorrow. I watched this to prepare for the show. Although I know it won't be as professional as this, I'll still be thankful for seeing it live. Thank you so much.

  • Thank you for posting these videos. This show is fantastic.

  • I have always had the first cast song cd from the 70s or sometime but I never really knew the story. It's so good. I always hated the direction of having the actors play instruments on stage, but that was because i'd never actually seen it done. I was wrong & it's perfect for this show. The director is fantastic. I might now consider seeing the Sweeney Todd revivial, but I'm pretty stuck in my way about its original direction when Lansbury and Hearn were in it. Thank you for posting this.

  • Fantastic! Where has this musical been all my life?

  • i seriously don't understand this musical...except for the fact that its about how robert sees married couples...ugh...and i have to write a paper about it..!

  • Absolutely fantastic. Thank you so much for posting.

  • i love how rauul walks out, he almost looks mad

  • Thank you for posting this, I've been wanting to see this show ever since I heard of it in a Broadway documentary but my mom's not really that much into Sondheim so... thank you.

  • Thanks for uploading these. I watched these first and then bought the DVD myself this week.

Sadly, I heard that George Furth (who wrote the dialogue) died earlier this week.

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting these 14 videos!!! I first saw this show on PBS in February and have been REALLY wanting to see it again ever since, but didn't want to spring for ordering the DVD. It's such a treat and an experience to see this show. Thanks again!

  • God, I love it The subtle realization of what you want...what you need. Amazing.

  • Yes, I agree! Thank you so much for posting these!! I've wanted to see this for such a long time and now I can watch it!! You're amazing! Thank you so much again!!

  • thank you so much for posting this. Like, I'm literally shaking right now, that was such a great performance of one of the best Sondheim shows, and definitely one of the best shows ever to hit Broadway.

    again, thanks so much.
