See how the chery copy of the Daewoo has roof racks? Well I saw one of these models at a Chery dealer here in Australia a couple of weks back, and I kid you not, the roof racks had a small sticker on them saying "Not for luggage transport. For aesthetic purposes only" or something.

While the legitimacy of these chinese car clones are disputable, it is possible that some of these clones are that a direct result of a "joint-venture" between the two companies in foreign markets. Its not uncommon to see similar cars copied and sold as a domestic brand in a foreign market.

It is not that the Chinese are copying without permission. Who are we to say they did it illegally. Some of these car clones are actually "joint ventures" from the original car brands. Car manufacturers often co-operate and do joint ventures with domestic car companies in foreign markets because it is much cheaper for them that in the way they save on building a new plant or shipping costs. Often sharing the original patent with others to sell. Its just basic economics & business.
