How sad it makes me to read some of the comments here... I am a native of East St. Louis. I remember life there fondly. You see dilapidated streets, I see places I rode my bike in the summer. The ironic thing is I never saw anyone shot. I never saw drugs. I wasn't involved in those things so I was not subject to them. My view was not Donna Reed but my family was. My teachers cared and taught me that I had to work 3 times as hard to get half as much. They believed in me.

I took the wrong exit on I-70 into East St. Lou at about 2am once... where I got to I could see the street filled with trash and people by the hundreds just hanging out in the street and within I'm guessing 6 blocks I saw 3 buildings on fire (I didn't stay long enough for a surveyors analysis. I shot a U turn, went up the off ramp backwards and back on I-70 in an freaking hurry.

I've written a documentary on ESTL that's slated to begin production March 2010 in hopes to shine light on the divine as well as the destruction of the city and the beauty of her people.
@DDixon: it's true that the city thrived before the massacre of 1917 when thereafter financial support was pulled nearly immediately. take money and opportunities from ANYWHERE and all you have left is destruction and degradation. it's not a black or white problem...economic
a poet, writer and musician born in ESTL, it's very disheartening to see the periodical books and films inaccurately depicting this forgotten city. We've had so many people speaking for us. It's time we spoke for ourselves.
