Very well explained - I managed to play it through after one session - it will take a few more to get it into my (old) memory. It will be nice to add a contemporary piece to my mandolin repertoire, which is mostly of Celtic, and a few Swing, songs ... thank you very much. Please could you put some more similar on you tube ... perhaps some Rod Stewart? Great stuff....
Thanks doc very helpful I just borrowed a mandolin from a bud to learn a few song, what a great little instrument. Do you know going to california by Zep and if so could you give me some tips or possibly make a vid for it. Thanks again
This is a wonderful video! You've got a great teaching style! Do you know of any practice exercises that would be helpful for a beginner mandolin player?
really appreciate you checking it out! I would do things that help both hands, scales, work on hammer ons and pull offs, mainly just play as much as you can and steal from everybody!!! All the best with your music,
my suggestion would be to think more of the 'groove' or 'pocket' of a tune and strum what seems to feel naturual. I don't really think of it in terms of a 'pattern'. IMO this is the most musical way to approach it - thanks for checking out the video and all the best with your music!
Thank you tonedr I'm so excited to be playing this song soon with my band. I like the way you show how to play this song. very friendly way to teach. Thanks man. Look forward to more of your stuff on the you tube.
Have played this song many many many times in my bands over the years. I like your chord structures, sure makes for a fueller sound. I must compliment you on the way you produce your lesson....excellent! The more mando players we have then the better the planet for sure!
appreciate your kind post and thanks for taking your time to check this out - most of all i wish you all the best with your music! Thanks for keep the mando out there....dale.
i'm guessing there are some really good vids to help you with that here on YT - if it won't stay in tune could be an issue with the tuners or perhaps even something else. I wish you the best with your music....dale.
Thanks, Dale, Im a guitar player who just got a beautiful mandolin as a gift and this is the first song that came to mind for me to learn, and you do a great job playing and teaching it! Can't wait to get it in my head and hands forever!

Screw?? Dang spell changer.. I mean cover... Thanks again, I just purchased a new Epiphone MM-50 today because my month old $60 mando just wasn't cutting it.. Lol. You think this song will sound ok on a f-style mando??
Man, I wish everyone's lessons on YouTube were as precise and informative as this.. You screws all the basics for beginners like me.. I'v been playing for just over a month.. Thanks.
Hey thanks for this. I just bought a mandolin a couple weeks ago on a whim (even though I've never played a stringed instrument before haha) and this is helping me with this song. Any advice for the F-chord? I feel like I'm struggling to stretch my hand into position haha.
congrats on your new mando....i hope you really enjoy it! Just give it some time everyday and it will come - it just seems for me it's staying with it. All the best with your music,
Great tutorial, this immediately sounds right - I tried a couple of other instructional videos for this song which were ballpark at best. I've had my mandolin for 5 days now and loving it (as a guitarist of 22+ years). Going back to guitar is weird though, seems like you're playing a giant fretboard, which I suppose you are in comparison, ha ha.
I'm trying to play this on guitar but I can't quite get the strumming pattern down, I know for a fact that the mandolin part is improvieable for the guitar, and I am playing it an octave lower which makes it waaaaay easier. I am new at this after all... but what's the main strumming pattern?
thanks for watching - i don't really think in strumming 'patterns' more feel for me. Never thought about transferring it to guitar - hope it works for you! Keep pickin,
Just picked up a used mandolin while on business travel. Good deal on an into level. I'm experienced guitar and always wanted to play with the mandolin. Love your lesson. At 1:44 couldn't hear whether it was an Em or Am but figured it out soon enough. Thanks for the lesson!

Great video sir! I started playing the Mandolin literally today and I have most of these chords down, but have problems switching between them in a timely manner. My background is in the violin, which is usually just one note at a time. Any suggestions for learning these motions? Thanks again!

This is my first official song on the new mando & I thank you so much for the excellent lesson! Hope to talk soon, I still have your cell # & may call you in the near future.

Wow! Great instruction! I've only had my mando for a week (best Christmas present ever) but this song is definitely one I want to work on learning and your video does such a great job of breaking it down. Now if I could only find an instructor in Colorado who teaches as well as you!
congrats on your new mando!! i hope you really enjoy it and i wish you all the best with your music.....thanks for your kind post and taking time to check out the video!
Could you please post the link to your performance video mentioned in the start of the tutorial? I've not been able to find it but would love to hear you play this all the way through. Thanx for the awesome tut !
Outstanding. The best tutorial on LMR by far. It would be helpful were you to describe the right hand strumming pattern. F - down-DOWN-up, up-down-up or whatever.
hello Hugh, hope you are very well sir! Thanks for your kind post.....i don't really think of a pattern, which may not be good, i just sort of try and feel it.
This one of the best teaching videos I've seen. I just recently (re)started playing mandolin, and this helped me greatly get back into the groove of it.
This helped me doubly because my mandolin is almost a twin to yours. (It's a Johnson, not a Collings though.)
thanks for your kind post and i appreciate you watching the video! My mando has the standard Collings nut width - 1 3/16. All the best with your music!
I bought a cheap Savannah semi acoustic mandolin on a whim just a few weeks ago. Not only have I had a great deal of pleasure from learning this piece, it has freshened up both my approach and enthusiasm for guitar too.
Great job. I printed the tabs from another site, but I like the way you do the chords better so I'll adapt my version. I really like the way Collings mandolins sound (I have an A-style Kentucky). Thanks for posting this.
this is a Collings MT-2V - made in Texas. It's a killer mando and i couldn't be happier with it. It's birdseye maple back/sides - adi spruce top and a varnish finish. They make a MT model with a few less bells and whistles you might want to look into. They have a great site you could find all the detail on. Thanks for watching!
I learned this song from your tutorial, its very well done. Since you are very good at breaking down these tutorials into managable pieces, do you also have a tutorial for "here comes the sun" by the Beatles? I would love to learn that.
thanks for watching the video and your kind post is appreciated! I do not have a tutorial on HCTS, great tune and one day i may work it up. All the best with your music,
Thank you!!! I've been looking for a good lesson to learn this song with, all the others use the other E shape which is really hard for a beginner to fret, but this made things easier, thank you (:
Thanks Dale you sure are a crazy mandolin player ..... I mean that in a good way ..... You are amazing . The way you demonstrate the song is perfect thank you
I just bought a mandolin. Great tutorial, thanks! I just learned my first song on it :-)

I'm fairly new to mandolin (having played guitar, bass, piano and ukulele for a few years now) and this video is excellent.
Played brilliantly and explained clearly. Superb thank you.
Keep up the good work!!!

Outstanding. The best tutorial on LMR by far. It would be helpful were you to describe the right hand strumming pattern. F - down-DOWN-up, up-down-up or whatever.
What is your preferred rhythym?

hello Hugh, hope you are very well sir!

So, thank you so much!

Excellent video!!! I've searched everywhere for a good tutorial, and yours is by far the best one I've come across!
Oh and do you happen to know the nut width on that mandolin?
Thanks :)

thanks for your kind post and i appreciate you watching the video!

Great tutorial. Thank you, Dale.
(Lovely instrument too, btw)

Great job. I printed the tabs from another site, but I like the way you do the chords better so I'll adapt my version. I really like the way Collings mandolins sound (I have an A-style Kentucky). Thanks for posting this.

I've been looking to buy a mandolin, what model is this? how much is it? and would you recommend it?
Good video as well

this is a Collings MT-2V - made in Texas.

Thank you!!! I've been looking for a good lesson to learn this song with, all the others use the other E shape which is really hard for a beginner to fret, but this made things easier, thank you (:
