@JeepRuby101 this song does have meaning..it talks about how musicians have a tendency to speak of absolutely nothing at all and fans don't notice/care because of "the hook" it brings you back to the song time and time again..
90's music was the best, they were actually musicians and didnt sample music or use computer made crap beats, being in a band myself i stay away from the new crap music like that and i love to play this song. listn to the words of this song its about how the music industry went to hell, its kind of like a big "fuck you" to the music industry.
ha ha.very nice comments, esp. the top rated commments .however the beauty of this song is the very fact that it draws these types of responses.well just listen to the lyrics.its actually a song about the typical song "MADE FOR THE RADIO" by whichever industry,it really doesnt matter because "THE HOOK BRINGS YOU BACK". lol well done Blues Traveler.
What a lot of people that bash today's music in favor of music from the 90s fail to realize is there are still a lot of great bands out there. Just because they don't get as much coverage doesn't mean they're not out there. Bands like this are still around, still kicking, so don't shit on the year or the era.
@ravenhermit But it's the fact that these bands were all around in the 90's, and it is what lots of people listened to and loved. These were the songs that were on the radio all the time, not shit like Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, or Chris Brown. Sure, there's still great music today - Dave Matthews Band is my favorite artist - but I miss the times when stuff like this was played all day, every day.

90s music is the greatest in my opinion. it was a great decade of lots of change in the world and well music was just another beautiful thing. Been rocking out to 90s since '91 when i was just a baby lol
I'll say one thing to those commenting on how today's music is crap. Every single generation has felt and opined that their music was good and that which followed sucked. 1930s and 40s music was the best, and then that gosh-awful rock'n'roll came along, no talent and no creativity, and ruined music. 80s and 90s music was awesome and now this new crap just sucks. It repeats and repeats. Every age and genre of music has merits to a group of people.
@JonasClark True, every generation has their good and bad, and every following generation sucks. But look at the music industry now compared to in the past. There was such a heavy emphasis on talent and songwriting in the past, compared to now, where most artists shouldn't even be considered music. I've heard bands with far more musical merit who are lucky to be playing at VFWs than a lot of the stuff I've heard on mainstream radio. Maybe I'm just biased. I do envy the music of the 60's and 70's
I did check around on Wiki and other internet sources and although I love this song I am not actually sure I understand the meaning of the lyrics. I get the words but the meaning behind is a bit unclear for the non-native speaker that I am... a little help please?
@EtiamSiOmnesEgoNon he's singing about how it doesn't matter what he sings about in his song because we are going to listen to it anyway since the song's hook is so good it will keep bringing us back.

Any one confident enough to wear a bandolero full of harmonicas is hilariously kick ass in my book!!! Blues Traveler is a great band, of real personality and musicianship!!! A lot of 90's music was like that. It was great decade that had many complete musicians in it, not one trick ponies generated by a corporate music hype machine.
This is one of my favorite songs of all time, if only because it's about how nobody listens to the lyrics as long as he sings like this, so he might as well BS his way through the song...
It really eats me up when i see ppl from older generations trash talk the newer up and coming. I am from the newer generation being 20 years old. I love all types of music. Music is a privilege to all of us. I just find it the most perplexing that older generations, who are from eras of music who don't judge and exile other music for being different would discriminate on som1 because individuality. I doubt all you are listening to opera and old gospel music. Just sayin, music is music, love it!
@nexus169 Lots of practice, when you practice enough you can learn to use your diaphram to control your air and there is a lot more than you think you can sustain when you do this, it's not that hard although it takes a while to master. I learned this from my 8th grade band teacher

@ptcala99 nah. our childhood music was better because most of it involved actual MUSIC, not synthesized garbage. yeah you're right with the whole LL Cool J and Madonna thing, but jesus, don't you wish you could go back to that over hearing a faggy little canadian kid and a bitch whole rolls around in arts and craft supplies as a wardrobe? come on now. 90's music was superior to the nonsense now. case closed.
@teh0wenzor11 I agree with you except i like lady gaga. Her voice is brilliant, and she's very creative. She also pays tribute to a lot of the the legends (did a duet with Tony Bennet, and the late great Clarence Clemons played a sax solo on Edge of Glory).
@teh0wenzor11 yessir.. fuckin synthisized bullshit,,, theres no talent in that.. every song that is mainstream has the same garbage techno beat... bmp tsk bmp tsk bmp tsk.. repeat repeat repeat.. good lord this generation sucks.
everyone needs to stop saying this. music on the radio during your childhood was no "better" in absolute terms than it is now. Your memory is distorted by the positivity effect, a psychological phenomenon associated with aging that causes us to recall old autobiographical memories more fondly than more recent ones.
To prove my point, take a look at the Billboard 100 in 1996, when "Hook" was at 60. ahead of them: LL Cool J, Joan Osbourne, and MADONNA. but no "pop crap," i guess.
@ptcala99 "Better" being a matter of opinion to each individual. so... yeah. This music was indeed BETTER than today's crap, in both my and many other individuals opinions.
What the billboard says does not dictate what I say.
It's pretty much the same chord structure/progression except being in a different key though. Instead of being in D, it's in A. Just a quick Transpose will suffice. @gibnumba4 I agree to an extent, but I think it extends past just the music business. I think this song goes toward our entire culture, where everyone is more concerned with appearances than substance. Just watch the music video, it shows the song pertaining to music, politics and even a miss America pageant! Utterly class track.
It really brings back better times to my head when you was younger you don't give a damn about nothing at all...And now. I miss have fourten years again passing the day listen radio.
I love this song, and the hook keeps bringing me back,... I need to buy the album! Popper is a legend! love his lyrics and the music vid, the man plays one MEAN harmonica,... oh, and looks like the vocalist from Nickelback on the drums, hahaha! :)
this may sound fucked up. but popper needs to get in another accident so he can be bed ridden again and write another fucking amazing album. their new shit is kind of . well.... shit.
When the song first came out, I always thought he said "the heart will bring you back" ... thought he was singing about recovering or something.... Great song!!!!!!!!
@milanf07 LOL I did also dont worry I did for years until i got cd and read lyrics ROFL it sounds like the heart brings you back and actually it should be the heart. That would be better word.
"It doesn't matter what I say as long as I sing with inflection that makes you feel I'll convey some inner truth or vasy reflection. But I've said nothing so far, and I can keep it up as long as it takes."
"This MTV is not for free. It's so PC it's killing me."
And he thought the music industry was bad years ago, when he wrote this. Geez. It's about 5 million times worse, now. (Not universally or anything, but geeeeeez.)
@phatato That was the point. To rip off the simplest, catchiest progression they could think of, and sing about how rife with that kind of simplicity and lack of sincerity the music industry is.

The song's own hook is the familiar harmonic structure of Pachelbel's Canon in D, which forms the basic chord progression of the song.[1][2]

When the song first came out, I always thought he said "the heart will bring you back" ... thought he was singing about recovering or something.... Great song!!!!!!!!
milanf07 1 year ago

@Vamphaery There is something amiss, I am being insincere. In fact, I don't mean any of this. Still my confession draws you near.
The lyrics are why I love this song!
cheshirepat30 6 months ago
I swear to God, I've listened to this song atleast 100 times this week. And it sounds just as good as the first time I heard it years ago.

Pachelbel's cannon in D, boooooooo! Write your own song mofos
phatato 1 year ago
@phatato That was the point. To rip off the simplest, catchiest progression they could think of, and sing about how rife with that kind of simplicity and lack of sincerity the music industry is.

@phatato
um dude... do you have no understanding of irony?
cut the classical and try to comprehend the simplest form of insult.
best of luck :D
