RIP Nicholas Courtney. Only the death of Sir Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart could have convinced the Doctor to trudge off to his own appointed murder. For all the threats to Earth that he fought, its strangely fitting that Sir Alistair passed away in quiet, comfortable surroundings. I wonder if Doris died before him and if his daughter Kate (from Downtime) put him in that care home. So long, Brigadier. You may be gone, but never ever forgotten.
We lost 2 great performers whose shoes can never be refilled.....but if by chance they find a actor/actress double, I hope that he or she gives them the respect to their characters role and keep their spirit alive....
I had no idea! Really sad to hear the Brig has finally passed away. The song says it all. THE BEST!! We had a 6.3magnitude earthquake here in Cristchurch on the same day he died which is so freaky. I guess I missed it on the news at the time because we had no power for ages. Funny way to find out. So many great memories of the Brig down the years - he helped Dr Who carry on for so long. At least we have all his old stories and interviews to remember how great he was!
I really hope that at the end of The Impossible Spaceman there is a "Nicholas Courtney 1929-2011". He deserves this as he was such a big part of the show.
It's been nearly two weeks since his passing, and i must've seen most of the tributes to this wonderful man a thousand times over, and yet i still weep when i think of him no longer being with us. Wonderful chap: sadly missed xx
We'll all miss the Brig and although he won't be around to give the Doctor some loving stick in the 50th anniversary special, he'll be there in spirit... :D UNIT won't be the same any more.
Very moving tribute. I had the good fortune to meet Nicholas Courtney at a convention in Weston Super Mare six years ago. He was a truly lovely man, an absolute gentleman, not to mention a fine actor who created the most memorable character in Doctor Who, beyond question. A wonderful legacy he has left behind, R.I.P.
My earliest memories of Dr Who are of Jon Pertwee and Nick Courtney. Might be too late to get a mention in this years series, but hopefully there'll be a reference in the Christmas Special, or a dedication at the very least. You can't think of Dr Who without thinking of The Brig!
In the very short time of me being introduced to Doctor Who, I honestly think that The Brigadier was the best companion The Doctor ever had, and Nicholas Courtney played the role so wonderfully his departure from this world will make the TARDIS seem just a little bit more empty. A Five Rounds Rapid salute in honor of this great man who has provided so many hours of entertainment and may he rest in peace.
Even thought i have been a doctor who fan for a year now. I can't see a world without the brig. Godspeed sir from waltnasa texas biggest doctor who fan
You will be sorely missed, and duly remembered as this honourable character.
Nicholas Courtney was a great actor, and I am shocked that it wasn't announced in the news.I only heard about him passing away from one of my cyberspace friends.UNIT won't be the same without him!
He won't be forgotten either, as I have some Dr Who dvd stories that he's in :)
@Ravingbadger1 I recommend you read the Doctor Who Magazine Comic story 'The Warkeeper's Crown'. This was the latest and now likely last Comic story to feature the Brigadier. It features David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor (in pen and ink of course) and is in many ways the reunion that we never got to see onscreen. Would it have killed Russell T Davies to have inserted him (and perhaps Jenny) into 'The End of Time' somehow? Anyway, the last panel of that story tears me up, now more than ever.
RIP, Nick Courtney. I liked Bret Vyon and the beloved Brig will always be my favourite character in the Whoniverse. Carry on in that big UNIT Base in the sky (not the Valiant), Brigadier. I salute you!
I caught a glipse of him once afew years back in Barking in a shop called 10th Planet before it closed down, he was in the back room signing Autographs, about 20 feet infront of me, but i didint want to disturb him so i left him to carry on with signing Autographs or whatever exactly he was doing when i noticed him.
i wish i could find the clip from the 5 drs where troughton says now brigadier have i ever lied to you? brig says repeatadly dr pat says well this will be the exception, one of my fav memories of nick courtney and i may have gotten the words wrong sorry
@Hauntedman1 That might be tricky territory. In the expanded Universe, its said that his second wife Doris was killed when their boat capsized during a boating outing. The heartbroken Brig survived and was later rejuvenated into a young man, allowing him to live a lot longer than he would've. He later died naturally sometime in the 2050s. The expanded Universe also says that Jo Grant eventually died in a house fire sometime in the future.

@TheSuperRunner They're released on Region 1 DVD - buy them. Then you can watch them over, see tons of extras and take pride in a huge and respectable collection which beats anything made since the 7th Doctor. :)
