do we really care about the visuals? it's all about the perception of the song, right? if you need a video to get it, i pity you. Morrissey and Marr more than explain the story of the song. Real Smiths fans will understand and don't need pictures. It's all in the mind. It was a nice video nonetheless x
i don't understand why everyone is freaking out. i mean, hell, i liked the smiths before i'd read 'the perks of being a wallflower,' but i never knew this song in particular, or really cared. it doesn't matter if the book was 'well written' or whatever bullshit because it's supposed to sound like it's a teenage boy! the book was good for what it was, and so is this song - just on different levels. leave it at that, muthafuckas. <3
I know people are angry that some people found this song from Charlie but I'm so proud! Finding an amazing song from an amazing book, being able to connect the two and make each more powerful is a great thing.
@SellTheBenefits i think your pretty retarded and have no sense of other people and their emotions. this is a beautiful song, emo is such a stupid fucking word
@SellTheBenefits The Smiths wrote songs that had emotion, powerful ones, at that, but "emo" in the modern sense is no way to describe them. This song is about death, in part, but that doesn't make it an emo song. They were one of the best bands of the twentieth century, and it is degrading to their legacy to write them off as simply "emo". Also, just to clear that up, nobody should be cutting themselves to any music, sad or not.
@Liiinnea I can understand that. The same happens to me whenever I hear people tell me they prefer Peter Gabriel's cover of The Magnetic Field's Book Of Love to the original. It's more that they just don't give proper credit to the original I find. Just find it disrespectful to the original artist.
Some people are touchy. And of course most of the people who heard of this song via the perks wont have known of the Smiths being an iconic indie band in the 80's as most of these people were born in the 90's.
I had heard this song before, I had forgotten about it until reading the book, it's a great song and is already put down as the only song to be played at my funeral.
THERE WAS A POINT WHEN I WAS LYING IN A BED LONG AGO AND I HEARD THIS SONG AND I THOUGHT TO MYSELF THAT THE SONG JUST MADE IT OK TO BE SAD...AND REALLY I HOPED THE SONG WAS JUST ABOUT JUST REFLECTIONS OF A MAD EXISTENCES BUT HE REALLY WANTED TO END IT ALL...(JUMPS OFF THE BERRYMAN BRIDGE)
Then I saw some of Brideshead Revisited in there, and I think a scene from the Outsiders? I don't see what any of these clips has ANYTHING to do with the Smith's videos.
@KittyLilyy : i too am proud that i somehow managed to find out about this extremely obscure band and song on my own....hahaha apparently i have very little to be proud of???
@KittyLilyy Ironically, I didn't discover the book until AFTER I found this video. I saw all the comments about this 'charlie' kid and just had to get the book to see what it was like.
@TylerMcManus1 Its called "The Perks Of Being A Wallflower" Its an amazing book about a very special boy. I highly recommend it if you like a good read :) I got my copy on amazon
i decided to look up this song after reading the perks of beings a wallflower, which i loved, and who knew, i loved this too! all of the music mentioned in the book actually. thank you Chbosky!
I'm only 70 pages into The Perks of Being A Wallflower, and I've already decided it's one of my favorite books. Partly because I really love this song.
Do you not think that this is a positive; that a simplistic and endearing novel has caused a number of people discover such a great band, and other such notable material? I don't see how in aiding an audience to discover a band's music some how 'ruins' their material in any way, i think your being a little over dramatic. Surely Chbosky is promoting thus celebrating the Smiths talent rather than 'ruining' it...
I love how people keep talking about "The Perks of Being a Wallflower". The song was made before the book was written. The book isn't even that well written; it's just another book angsty teenagers can identify themselves with. That book ruined this beautiful song.
@WobbleWeed404 Angsty teenagers? I don't think an angsty teen would take time to read a novel with more then two hundred pages. Yes it's true that if you had something really bad happen in your life, it's easy to identify yourself with the book. And yes you're entitled to your opinion of liking the book or not.. But don't say something is poorly written just because you don't like it.
@Samuraishell But it wasn't well written whatsoever. Liking a novel has nothing to do with how it's written. For example, I do not like Herman Melville. Does it mean Billy Budd or Moby Dick wasn't well written? Anyway I wasn't judging anybody. I think you're judging me. Calm down and think about why you're attacking me for stating my opinion.
@WobbleWeed404 Also the book didn't ruin the song. What it did was introduce people to something they didn't know about, and may end up liking. Just like how a movie or a friend may have introduced you to a song you like. Dos that mean you ruined it? No of course not. So as long as these people like the song, and aren't being idiots about it. Then stop judging them, and acknowledge that they like the song to. Maybe even more then you do.
@WobbleWeed404 I love how you'r getting all pissy about a book introducing people to good music. Not everyone is as righteous and fucking amazing as you and loved the Smiths before they read the book. What about people listening to a song makes it ruined? Stop trying to be so fucking impressive just because you might have liked a band before someone else or heard them first. It makes you look terribly pathetic.
@Mdaniels909 I wasn't pissy. And I never said I was amazing nor I did I say I was righteous. I just said what I think. I think you're the one who's angry.
I like the clips of West Side Story, my favorite musical. The ending scene of Midnight Cowboy goes pairs nicely with the ending of this song. I'm sure Morrissey would appreciate this video ♥
@dontskatenike its about this boy who starts his first year of high school and doesn't really fit anywhere. through a chain of events he ends up becoming really good friends with a tight knit group of seniors who introduce him to sex, drugs, and the like, but not necessarily in a negative way. it also illustrates the way all these kids deal with the various issues of their lives, some very serious, some not as much. It's really about learning to participate in life, learning to live...
@dontskatenike ...and to appreciate yourself and others regardless of what you/they have been through and where you are in life. personally, i think it's extremely well and creatively written, written as letters from charlie to an unnamed stranger, the reader. i think the author did a great job of capturing the voice of a young teenager and really portraying his naivety etc as he begins to really experience life. although alot of the issues the characters deal with are really serious...
@dontskatenike ...there is something almost everyone can relate to in one way or another in the story. i'd suggest reading it. if nothing else, you read it for yourself and do with it what you will.
I actually didn't like The Perks of Being A Wallflower that much... And I actually heard about this song from friends. And I knew all of the books and movies before I read the book. In hindsight this should've made me more excited while I read it, but it kind of ruined it now that everyone is trying to relate through Charlie by reading and listening to the songs he did. You need to find your own passage to be "Infinite", not a characters.
i did love the smiths before reading the perks of being a wallflower but i didn't really listen to this particular song but now i love it thanks to the book :) they are both very lovely.
so you read a shite book, and you all decide to plaster your opinion of a book here, on a song by the smiths. good one. Go buy a Morrissey album, forget about that stupid book, go and get a decent one: The Sotweed Factor" by John Barth is rather a ripper. *disclaimer* don't bother reading it if you've an attention span of less than four hours
Thank you for sharing this, a pretty girl made my grave last night and this was all I could listen to on the way home. The video is perfect IMHO. Is it better to be poor and in love or rich but only knowing lust?
oh its such a great video i wonder if its originally filmed for the song or if is a few shots from a movie/show witch wouldnt shock me at all since morrissey is such a pop culture junkie.
i know! i just got it at borders yesterday cause my best friend had to read it for her english class at her college in seattle and i started it this morning and i'm halfway through and he keeps talking about this song so i just had to look it up. .
not only was this song in Perks, but the smiths feature in the story of 500 days of summer a lot as well. Even though it's not a great film, yay smiths distribution!
A lot of people have found this song through The Perks Of Being A Wallflower. Amazing book. Actually, my favourite book. This song is just breath taking.
Haahaahaha. It's funny how everyone (Including me) looks up this song after reading The Perks of Being A Wallflower. I knew this song already, but I haven't listened to it in a while. Good book and song.
omg i just finished The Perks Of Being A Wallflower!!! such a good book!!!! I actually looked up the smiths on wikipedia and read the stuff that featured them, and that's how i stumbled upon this amazing book and song!!

This song basically describes Perks for me. i love them both [song and book] very much.
helenHeller01 2 years ago 33
haha it pretty much is the theme song for Perks.

not only was this song in Perks, but the smiths feature in the story of 500 days of summer a lot as well.

I found this song because it was mentioned in a book. I suggest everybody read it. "The perks of being a wallflower" by Stephen Chbosky. =]
