Yeah you're right, only the male has these poisonous spines however, and if you get nicked by one, you will end up in the hospital for maybe a couple MONTH's, these bad boys may be natures garbage dump of parts (kidding :p), but they can pack us a wallop.

yeah dude, he's right.. platypus have a sharp claw at each hind leg thats connected to a poison gland.. it kills animals but isnt really lethal to humans.. but does cause severe pain.. you will end up in the hospital because it causes bleeding and burning it seconds, and other animals like cats and dogs die.. females too have that claw.. but they shed theirs at 3 months, platypus are awesome!

according to wikipedia (i know, i know) only mature males have poison glands, and they produce more during mating season so they think it's about asserting dominance over other males (i did something similar when while fighting over a girl at the club i injected a guy with strychnine but that's a different story; he recovered within several weeks). but yeah, it's not really a defense or predatory mechanism, it's just between platypi :) isn't lethal to humans, though it doesn't sound pleasant...

You are so dumb! Platypus have poisonous barbs to ward off predators and to fight rival males. If a male were to use it's poison during mating, the female would die. It's poison is strong enough to cause swelling and pain in humans.
