@volound Since you are claiming that he should be compared to "morality we have now", I am assuming that you too believe that morality is a relative concept that changes over time.

Therefore, it is impossible to judge him according to morality we have now since in another 1000 yrs, morality as we see it in the society will change, but the fundamentals to the moral code, in this case the concept of slavery being bad (an idea which he supported, practiced and propagated) will be there.

I, too, believe morality is a relative concept that changes over time. One reason why slavery is disliked is because it allows one human being the opportunity to degrade, exploit and submit to a fellow human being. If you look into why early Islamic society thought slavery was bad, it was along those lines. Fortunately, it is true today. As for as meat eaters being morally relatively abdominal, I guess we have to live another 1000 yrs to figure that out :)

It's very difficult to even watch.

Sadly, it existed since before Buddha's time in India.  It was so ubiquitous just ouside his former palace walls, in fact, that once Buddha (at the time a spoiled prince) ventured out & saw what's really out there, there's no turning back...

It's so painful & pervasive, Buddha's understanding of nature & man's place in it revolved around PAIN & SUFFERING & the acceptance of pain & suffering as integral & INESCAPBLE parts of humanity & nature itself...
