  • im not chinesse but i've admit tht chinese had done a very perfect job there. such amazing and tht would be unforgettble forever. hope for better for england this year.

  • It's cool, but overrated. I prefer Barcelona lol

  • hard to believe. Four years have past and all the best to London in July.

  • fuck this 240p, this deserves 1080p at least

  • who said ?

    the next nazi is chinese

  • My top three Olympic Flame lighting moments:

    1. Beijing 2008

    2. Sydney 2000

    3. Barca '92

  • If anyone's going to over do it on the fireworks, it's going to be the Chinese.

  • 1992 Barcelona is the best but this is one of the best.

The Barcelona lighting will be the best... Barcelona 92 we'll remember always that days...

  • Comment removed

  • I really wish LONDON can PULL if off.

  • all was CG animation, even the public...!!!

  • BARCELONA 92 is the best ever...

  • Most of those fireworks were fake. Athens was better.

  • @HFonsi Fake? How can they fake the fireworks? CGI? They INVENT the fireworks!

  • @astra908 They used computer programs to make them. Look it up. And FYI I DON'T care if they invented fireworks!

  • @HFonsi Firework is really famous in China, what do you mean by most of the fireworks were fake? Jealous? Huh?

  • @JJFOWang Jealous of the fireworks? Huh.... NO. The only thing I am saying here is that they were digitally enhanced. For example, these fireworks do not leave a smoke cloud after exploding. How is that possible? CGI?

  • @HFonsi Well, I'll take this as a prediction..FYL~..

  • the best opening ceremonies: Beijing and Barcelona!!!

  • Do you know the name of that song ??

  • @jimbo

What sounds like a better government

One with no hierarchy and no racism

Or one that's literal definition is survival of the fittest?

  • i wonder how they put that flame out?

  • we Chinese people are peaceful and love foreign visitors. I am glad so many visitors liked the olympics and helped the world keep the olympic spirit high!!!! We love the world!!!

  • Well with all the problems we hear about China, at least they managed to mesmerize the whole world with their talent and beauty :) Congrats china lots of respect ^_^

  • Exactly 3 years ago today! 8/8/08, today is 8/8/11!

  • America rules,,,and thank God for it. I shudder to think of living in a world dominated by the Communist Chinese,

  • @mracademyawards1 stop burrowing so much money from china please. shameless yanks

  • @mracademyawards1 If the world turns a better place than is now, with US domination, then Long Live China and the Communism!

  • Ah, btw, Bird's nest is the most advanced design ever for a buliding. New technologies were developed for it's making.

  • the flying torch runner first appeared before. Athens 2004 5 minutes before torch lightning, when runners from the cities of the world flew.

A flame inside water, this is what london needs to do in order to be original.

Oh, I forgot, that was athens too.

  • The Olympics are about individualism and proving yourself greater than other mortals. I got the distinct feeling of a great mass, one China declaring itself instead of one out of many as the Olympics are supposed to be about, especially the ancient one.

  • @ImaginedWriter NO! The Olympics is all about world peace and prosperity through out the world.

  • @The2010countdown No it isn't, read up on the ethos of the original Olympics. Winners were declared Gods. They were competing for glory.

  • @ImaginedWriter But before the Ancient Olympics there was war in Greece

  • The Bahamas need for host the Oympics

  • i thought that as this one was kinda boring... nothing really all that cool or beautiful about it :/

  • It was not exciting at all! I didn't like that Opening's Ceremony. China didn't show us any relation with the Olympic Games and this means that we are altering the spirit of the Olympic Games. In a couple of years, we'll not have anything - except the "Olympic" term - if we'll not see clearly.

  • Beijing and Athens --> Best Olympics!

  • a great olympics show-wise and visually, but for the atmostphere it was poor, something London will take advantage of and achieve. London's visuals will be gd but not as gd as beijings, as beijing solely concentrated on the visuals and nothing else.

  • There will never be another like this...just look at the 2012 Olympic logo and mascots. Pure crap.

  • If we are fighting for equality in our own country then we must not engaged in racial slurs and even comments about what's the best olympics ever. They are conflicting issues. You want equality in your country but superiority of your country over the others?

  • you cant beat it....thats just it :P

  • Im English and i'm worried that the London 2012 Olympics will be a complete shambles, i wish we weren't hosting them now-of course i may be wrong but we'' never match Beijing.

  • @TheWhiteKnight89, I would not worry too much. London will be fine. I look forward to a very unique, British opening ceremony. The British have much to be proud of: Shakespearean literature, Newtonian physics, etc.

Comparing opening ceremonies is lame. Each opening ceremony ought to be enjoyed in its own light, because each is designed to highlight the best of the host country itself. As Jacques Rogge has said, it's the athletes, not the games, that are competing against each other.

  • 所有中國人.....新年快樂!

  • Why do you post a comment worrying about china's communism on an olympic video?

  • In China there is a huge gap between the well to do elites and the rural poor - another example that communism has failed - it failed in the west and in Asia its days are numbered. The Party (and its propaganda machine) is just just a mafia club trying to hold power. It does not tolerate any form outside of its own. Its as violent and a corrupt as it gets. Communism has more blood on its hands than any other political ideology or misleading religion. Free China.

  • @jimbo1969able Strange comment. Why you said all these irrelevant things in this video. You can't accept fact or you are having sour grapes?

  • @jimbo1969able, that's not a failure of communism. That's a failure of market reforms (in this case capitalism). The Communist Party originally intended to turn China into a purely classless society where everyone was truly equal, but that didn't work, so they opened China's economy to capitalist reforms. Since then, those who've taken advantage of capitalism have become wealthy and those who haven't remained poor and desperate.

  • @ZhangtheGreat

What was the failure of communism then? that they Party killed upwards of some figures of 80 plus million? - ie great famine, various purges. 'Equality' was not invented by communism, its version of equality is impractical and unjust. Other parts of communism is its intolerance for other belief systems, a lack of freedom in beliefs other than what ever communist power allows. History has shown communism is one of the worse things to happen to mankind.

  • @jimbo1969able, typical. I prove your claim wrong and you divert to another argument. This isn't a political video, so I'm not going to get into it here and clog the comments with crap because you can't leave politics out of anything.

  • @ZhangtheGreat

You proved zippo. Prove communism did not fail. by the way Youtube is banned in China. Go figure.

  • @jimbo1969able, "In China there is a huge gap between the well to do elites and the rural poor - another example that communism has failed." Keep telling yourself that if it makes you sleep better at night. Those of us who actually studied politics and know what an erroneous argument is will keep laughing at you.

If you haven't learned to keep politics out of videos that aren't political (like this one), you need to go back to school.

  • @jimbo1969able I was just there as an exchange student, and yes, there is a difference in wealth, but it really depends on where they live. The people in my rural homestay were poorer than my urban homestay and the inner mongolia homestay was the same as the rural, buts it's not as terrible as you make it sound. And the original communist party in China was terrible, but there were other terrible governments and groups in history, like the Nazis, and even the Christians killed a lot of people.

  • wow, at 240p i feel like im actually IN the stadium

    /sarcasm.

  • Let me say this again, i am not defending China's communism but im trying to say the point that the view of communist countries are unfairly portrayed because of the word communist. In reality, many western societies has communist parts in their government. For example, is universal health care not a form of equal treatment? and education in many countries are also provided. There is nothing wrong in the idea but the word communist now = evil. this reaction to the word is brain washing.

  • The ceremony was not as memorable as Athens or Sydney, but this sequence was seriously breathtaking.

  • The Games of the 29TH Olympiad was one of the most outstanding shows of humanity showing and celebrating human excellence. I hope that the Phillipine Islands will have an opportunity in the future for it to showcase the cultural richness of the country. BEIJING OLYMPICS IS ONE OF THE BEST OLYMPIC GAMES OF HUMANITY. THANKS CHINA! -ayse adan from the Philippines.. :)

  • this and the lighting in torino were the most amazing torch relays that i have ever saw b4 those 2 the one in sydney blew my mind anthens was not that great and SLC failed miserably and vancouver had too much going on for me i was highly disappointed with everything they had to offer

  • best olympic games ever to be held

  • CHINA = FAKE! F*cking Fake

  • @MsJustAFun u jelly?

  • the athens opening cermony sucked eggs

  • the best opening ceremony was in greece!!!!

  • Best opening ceremony ever~~ Asian RULES~~~~ lol

  • Only CHINA can beat CHINA.

  • @chefbryant728 how bout a nuke? nvm even nukes cant beat china

  • Lot of Westerners here belly aching about China and its love affair with communism., but have you wondered why China turned to communism! After China's defeat in the Sino-Japanese war of 1894-95, the democratically free, Western powers of the US, Britain, France & Germany carved China up for it's own political and economic motives. Is it little wonder then, that the Chinese after regaining control of their country, were seduced by the siren song of communism.

  • @britishmarineboy

    yes you are right

Nowadays, Communits or not, it just a name. China did "imported" the democratic systme in 1910~40's but it fail, warlords control all resources, cant stop invasion.

Democratic system works in Taiwan, but not in China, the whole big country is combined with man races / culture/ language. Yes the 1966~76 propaganda is wrong and a catastrophy. lets not compare democratic / communits whos better whos worst, different country have different situation.

  • A few comments here denouncing China and communism, but let's not forget that it was democracy and the democratic system that created and allowed Hitler and the Nazis party , perhaps, the most vile figure and government in world history, to flourish and export its vision of suffering and evil to the world. Suppose it's one of the major flaws of democracy, that the majority can sometimes get it wrong and elect the wrong person into power. A recent example - Bush and Co.

  • I think VIETNAM is better than Philippines... it's kinda more organized, clean amd more industrialized than ours.. Philippines was already behind than the other developing (3rd world countries)... hahaiii...will NOYNOY ever make it up???

  • fuk thats a lot of fireworks.!!!

  • @clostin are you wu mao dang? communism is bad. i lived in a communist country, and anyone who said it is not bad is either brain dead or afraid.

  • @maybudha Sure, there's always going to be flaws and corruption in any systems. And sure, the CCP isn't the best government there is. But look at the big picture, democratic India had a head start, look where it's at now, still a shithole, where people literally shit in the open. The CCP ain't perfect, and they are doing a lot of things wrong and backwards, still they sometimes manage to get shit done and that's better than doing nothing and messing with elections all the time.

  • omg awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • OMG! Awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Oh Denmark where "some" people try to make fun of religion as much as possible? That's the country you talking about?

  • "communism makes everyone equally poor; capitalism makes everyone unequally rich" -- the world is flat.

    is there difference?

  • Why dont we just accept our differences and be united. haaay...

  • 1:10 is crazy, i was like holy s#$*

  • hey guys...this is only an olympic opening,,,dnt no y ur so into politics...

  • In olympic theres no such things as communist or terrorist.

    btw, it was beautiful

  • Awesome!!!

  • If anyone knows the name of the song used after the cauldron is ignited and where I can get it at, please send me a message and let me know!!!

  • austinexp,

That's nice and grand music. China really know how to pick the right song for the right moment.

  • Asians RULE

  • @crimsonalchemist999 inferiority complex much ? Olympics is about celebrating and sharing the same human spirit - much extravagence here but not much real grandeur. btw I'm chinese

  • @clostin: We westerners fear is not really communism, although that is the word that is used. It's socialism. You see, a socialist government is in the process of becoming communistic; it is supposed to be a temporary government hat will step down. Problem is, it never does, and it retains it's totalitarian powers over it's people. Communism, in my opinion, is amazing, though sadly it will never work in practice.

  • Westerners have a bad view of the Communists he of the great influence of the U.S. in the world. For example: In American movies are always the Soviets "evil" and Americans who want to save the world. This is not a critique of the American people, but I'm Brazilian and this irritates me a great influence on my North American parents, we are losing our identity because of this ...

  • I am so for you Go Brazil!

As for Communism and America, you're so right...I think it's basickly what's left of Mcarthyism...one day they might wake up, some f them already have...I'm for you and I'm not a communist...

  • ... ... I think the Brazilian people is a copy of "sloppy" of Americans, and they think we live in the jungle with 80% of Brazilians live in areas urbanas. Where is the Brazilian identity? This is sad!

  • what i dont understand is why does westerners think that just because a country is communists they are bad. isnt that a brain wash of its own? think about what the communist statement is. it stats that everyone is entitled to being treated equally and deserves the same stuff. It might seem like a ideal and impossible goal but at least the aim is pure. think about democratic system gives people. Sure the freedom but thats only for the rich, the poor stays poor and the rich gets richer.

  • Clostsin - true Communism has never existed and Marx himself would have agreed that neither Russia nor China, based on Imperial power structures and rural peasantry, are good candidates for it. China's progress in the 20th and 21st centruy has nothing to do with Communism, and everything to do with Command Economy Capitalism. In the end, China will have a truly democratic government, but the question is, how many? China may have a common culture (sort of), but regional identites remain strong.

  • i agree but then the question becomes why does westerners look at a country governed by a communist party with distrust? is it really true that democractic system is better than the communist system or is it just because everyone is brainwashed into thinking communist party = evil.

  • Clostin: Why? Because regimes that CALL themselves "communist" are historically just totalitarian dictatorships with a little political theory to justify their actions. The USSR murdered millions (yes, millions) of its own people from the 20s-50s. North Korea? It's like they modeled it on "1984". Mao knowingly starved 30 million peasants during the "Great Leap Forward". Tianamen was a cakewalk by comparison. China has made great strides, and I'm sure it will make more. But communism? Uh, no.

  • @clostsin tell that to the construction workers who committed suicide after building for the Olympics because their government wouldn't pay them.

i love that, just because westerners think that a country is communist, it's bad, well i dont understand why you think because a communist country put on a pretty ceremony, its good

  • Comment removed

  • @TwistedComplex wtf what contruction workers comitted suicide???????

the government does pay them . cant u just see that its a good olympics

  • @Jin6107 i know its a good Olympics but thats not what i was talking about

  • @TwistedComplex They WERE paid idiot. China is not communist Russia! Stop treating it like it is. Just because you don't agree with the way that a country is run, does not mean that you can hate on it. Shit, I got the hell out of China BECAUSE of communism, and I'm still pissed of by your comment. Do you realize what a big deal this was to Chinese everywhere? This was China's way of telling the world that we are not a backwards third world country, and all you can do is hate.

  • @uhohimyellow why shouldnt i hate a countries government with millions of starving citizens and massacres like Tienanmen square

i dont hate chinese, theyre hard working, smart, disciplined people and i dont like seeing them exploited by government

  • @TwistedComplex, you are simply putting positive into negative, a typical HATER!!! Hater and hate everything China do. You meant Chinese should be FAT, LAZY, BANKRUPT, ARROGANT, NOSING on other nation's affair, BULLY small countries like IRAQ and AFGANISTAN, then the government is GOOD?

  • @karmlan123 lol you assume im some patriot who thinks USA is 10 times better than any other country

    typical dumbass

anything else you want to falsely accuse me of being? or are you done making a dick of yourself?

  • @clostsin do you think that, in china for example, everyone is equal?? that there is no poor , no rich... Come on!!! Communism is a pretty good idea, but only on theory, never in the real life

  • @clostsin we need more people who are like you. good comment.

  • @clostsin Untrue, you've never been to Denmark? Denmark is voted the happiest country in the wolrd. The country in the world where there's the least difference between rich and poor.

  • @clostsin

I think VIETNAM is better than Philippines... it's kinda more organized, clean amd more industrialized than ours.. Philippines was already behind than the other developing (3rd world countries)... hahaiii...will NOYNOY ever make it up???

  • @bryleesnorlax2008 Fuck you!

  • @clostsin not everyone.... americans mostly

  • @clostsin

    i agree

  • @clostsin - Sure the freedom but thats only for the rich, the poor stays poor and the rich gets richer.

Same thing in China right? All the poor will be poor forever and rich (those are in the Government) will be rich forever. In the free world a poor can be rich if he works harder. In your country, no matter what a poor will do even if he bleed in work he will still be poor. you are faking your belief about communism. I wonder what are the things you cant FAKE.

  • @clostsin The problem isn't the communism. A country can have capitalist policies, communist policies, or even can apply a "third way" (as Sweden). The problem isn't the economic system. The problem is in the political system. The Liberty should be above all in all countries. And, the only system that can guarantee this is the Democracy. In short, the problem isn't that China is communist. The problem is that it's not a democracy.

  • @Emmets There's countless nations in Africa centuries behind China, why aren't you dissing them?

So it's still a racism problem, not this "upholder of democracy" thing.

  • I'm not dissing. Am I lying if I say that China is not a democracy? Am I lying if I say that China is a regime that kill their people only for think different?

  • @Emmets of course it is, have I never denied that? Problem is, what can yo do?

The fact remains history taught us a sudden vacuum of power leads to more suffering of the people - look at the Soviet Union, when it changed to democracy the hole a single, powerful government left created cracks, and completely shattered the Union, not to mention the battles and conflict - and who suffered the most, the people!

You wish the best for its people, how are you going to guarantee a peaceful transition?

  • @Emmets You might disagree with the Chinese government's way of doing things, but you can't deny they at least fully opened the Chinese market, modernised it, backed it up with a powerful army, and already fully industrialised the nation in quarter the time Britain took. Many might still live in impoverished states, but their lives have never been better in history, can you deny that?

  • @clostsin Because communism IS bad. Fuck you.

  • @amrite right or wrong that;s just plain rude....

  • @milkofmal Do you know the real Chinese political system? The communist party is wielded into every process and governmental body down to villages! It may not be truthfully communist any more, but it's still an icon of hope (spare your sarcasm out for now) for many, snatch this icon, this belief away is like telling Christians the Bible is a lie.

Then every process breaks down, China paralysed and shattered. Is that what you want? Why just won't you give China time to develop peacefully???

  • @xuci111111 yes i know, i know much more and experience more than u think i know, buddy... i'd spare my sarcasms and puns when i like to do so at my wish. I'd rather argue with those who have Valid views and Experience than those who jerk - off on You tube. The bible is a Lie? That's what they say? Was at Qingdao at a roman catholic church as well as at Tianjin, No such thing buddy... Vent your frustrations elsewhere or send me pics/videos that shows religious oppression first then we talk...

  • @milkofmal It was replied to the wrong comment. The Bible? What?

  • @clostsin there are bad and good in democracy and communism. what i dont agree in capitalism is that. some people are getting richer, piling up money in their bank account, and eventually their money is is sitting there and useless. while others are fighting for life just to feed their tummy. surely, it is not fair. I believe in the communism with the chinese characteristics. China is heading to the right directions. Communism is a way to make poor country getting rich quicker. it is good things

  • @clostsin agreed.

  • @clostsin that was very well said! Very nice to see a well thought out response that isn't racist or wrapped up in superpatriotic ideas. I am confident US & china will become closer-China is a beautiful country & the people are warm hearted & kind-all a matter of getting to know you.I live in NYC & am not chinese, but Spanish.

  • @clostsin

Actually communism is: political ideology that believes all people are equal, and that everyone should work for the good of the CENTRAL GOVERNMENT, which decides how EVERYTHING should be done.

There's a difference between a Utopian society (which you're thinking of) and a communist one.

Just ask the million of Chinese people who starve to death and are displaced from their homes, and the Great FireWall of china that censors everything. You my friend are ignorant.

  • @clostsin

Also do you think its a good way of governing a country where the people are not allowed to speak against what the government is doing - good or bad? And if you do - you'll be put in jail for several years.. Honestly you're not even from China or you wouldn't be saying this.

  • @clostsin

And the proof is in the pudding - Cuba, North Korea, China etc. all have major human right issues, the only thing they have in common is that they're all communist.

  • I myself spoke to a person from China and asked him if their government was still communist and this was his reply: yes 。and i hate the ruling party ,but i can not speak it out ,you will be sentenced to several years in prison 。i am a patriotic collage student ,but i do not like the government,。。。i cant speak too much here ,because this website is under censorship of my government

  • @sweetfeat1

if you can read chinese you would know this is bs

  • if china is such a bad and evil place, then why does america continue trade, why are their children so much smarter, why do their teenagers not make half the mistakes that american teens make, america is not free, the corporations run america and give you the illusion of freedom, way to go china, keep doing what you do, and id bet it wierd for america to talk down to you when they have to look up :)

  • Xaira12, wake up and smell the "kafei". We' ve been hearing about how various countries are going to leave us behind for my entire life (and I was born in the 1960s) and China is just the latest. 20 years from now, America is still going to be going strong and people are going to be wondering why China never lived up to its promise. Believe it.

  • errr america is strong in military but weak in economy right now. you guys arent in a depression for no reason.

  • i beleive that the people of china should have the freedom of speech, the gov't of china is hiding many things. people want to be people, not slaves or machines.. we are all human, we must be happy and live in peace, we are the children of this world, so all the hi pocket persons, get to know your feelings. money is not the way, only happiness among all the world.

  • Im looking for the part when all the teams walk together, I cant find it anywhere. Can somebody tell me where can I find that video?? thanks!

  • As a Canadian, I'm very confused as to why everyone's drawing comparisons with Vancouver's opening ceremonies. Nobody could have topped what China did here and I honestly don't think Canada tried to. We had a nice mix of cultural references and tributes and when things went a little haywire, (the damn torch not coming out of the ground) we handled it in true Canadian fashion; smile, and look good :P

  • Damn, with something as awesome as this, I don't care how much human rights abuses they committed! This makes up for it!

  • They put on an outstanding show.Although I had problems with a country as terrible as China on human rights, getting the olympics in the first place, I can understand the average Chinese's anger at China wholly being defined by Tibet..and other issues of Freedom and Civil Liberties..I hope the day comes when Chinese are as proud of having basic freedom of speech and human rights as they are about their economic success;they will be a much more likable people to me then. .

  • @mrbriscoe2001 speak for yourself -_-

  • McCrazy: I thought that was what I was doing...

  • Perhaps you should go to China and experience your perception of "lack of freedom of speech and human rights" yourself. If everything you know about China is coming from the Western media, I would say you don't know much.

  • Comment removed

  • zpringleslover;I know the Chinese can't google Tienaman Square and get any info on the 1989 demonstrations and repression that occurred there;I know they hire young Chinese to monitor and help block internet content;I know they're still arresting political dissisdents;a society without Freedom of Speech and information can't be a healthy one.and a relationship between 2 countries entirely based on commerce and not shared values isn't healthy either.

  • to mrbriscoe2001:

    1. I know for a fact that you can baidu it. And for the record, not everything you've seen or read about the incident is true. I personally know people who watched live tv footage of the organizers of the demos eating feasts when they were telling their student supporters to fast.

    2. I've seen people discuss everything from politics to religion to how horrible the Olympics theme was on the internet.

  • 3. Political dissidents = another term from potential terrorists. Tell me, if an organized group of people didn't like a government, what are the chances that that government will step down after listening to their peaceful protests. If people are colluding due to common dislike of the state, chances are, sooner or later they'll start doing something violent. If people started going "Oh f**k the gov't, let's make a new one" in the US, chances are, they'll be arrested too.

  • Political dissidents=potential terrorists; This whole post is disgustingly undemocratic;you don't deserve to live in a democracy.

  • No, in the US they are not arrested. The 1st amendment protects their rights to speak their mind... crashing hijacked planes into buildings is a terrorist act. Saying you hate George W. Bush, or saying you hate Obama, is using your right to free speech. Why would the US govt arrest people when it was founded on the idea of "Oh F**k the gov't [the British Crown] let's make a new one [which they did]." not saying the US govt is the best or w/o faults, but don't compare it w/ China's record.

  • 4. Again, I've lived in China. People are free to discuss and criticize whatever they want, as long as it is in a constructive manner. If you've heard otherwise, chances are, those people are still thinking of China 30-40 years ago, or they have some personal grudge.

    5. So how many countries associating with the US agreed or supported its selfish war on Iraq? Are all those relationships unhealthy now too? Not everyone thinks the same, and that's life.

  • Political dissidents are still being harassed in China;it's documented;healthy relationships are about shared values;Freedom of Speech,Democracy,Freedom of the Press are the cfoundations;;if you dont' those,you're living in a backwards nation;I don't care what the GNP is;

  • With 1billion+ people, stable development is crucial to sustain lives, and continuous attempts at overthrowing the government does little to help that cause.

Also, I'll ask you this: do you really think that foreign countries don't have an agenda of their own when they support these dissidents? China needs strict laws to prevent the country from becoming a puppet to the western world. As for human rights, it's slowly improving. I'm sure you're country wasn't "perfect" from the start either.

  • Fear of freedom of speech doesn't make for better government;even if the culture wants to conceal dirty laundry;this applies to every culture;I remember the Clarence Thomas -Anita Hill public circus in the 90's;at the time, I thought the graphic discussion of sexual harassment was beneath a public Senate hearing;but every guy in America was on his best behavior at work that week;an issue that affected people became mainstream;freedom of speech and thought is the only way a society improves;

  • How many Chinese kids died because of sub-standard construction during it's last major earthquake?;and the government wanted to silence the parents who wanted private and public corruption investigated? How does this lead to a better result in which this doesn't happen again?I admire the Chinese work ethic and drive in education;I just believe their culture to be a tad xenophobic

  • I think we'll just have to agree to disagree, as most political arguments tend to end :) I do agree that the Chinese can be xenophobic, but I think that goes for all of Asia, and the West as well. For example, from my experiences, Quebec-ers in Canada tend to view immigrants unfavorably because it dilutes their French culture. The West has more of an influence on the lifestyles of the East right now, so that's why China's fears seems more significant.

  • The problem in China is that because of its size regulation down to all lower levels of the government is very hard. The conditions are improving though, as the country's becoming wealthier. I do find it interesting, that the focus of Western media has been on faults and not on the great rescue efforts. The Prime Minister flew down to Sichuan to direct rescue efforts himself while the area was still a danger zone. How many countries have leaders that are that dedicated?

  • @PringlesLover123, not only that, but he did it THE DAY IT HAPPENED.

In political science, one of the biggest trade-offs in government systems is the idea of "responsiveness" (how quickly a gov't can act) vs. "representation" (how many voices influence gov't). The benefit of having a non-representative gov't like China's is that when something needs to get done, it gets done because they don't have to consider 500 different opinions. Sometimes (certainly not all the time), it's better that way.

  • Did you live in China when the govt used anti-aircraft artillery against its own people in 1989? Did you live in China when Beijing's OWN CITIZENS blocked the roads with cars/furniture/anything they could find, to prevent the army tanks from coming into THEIR city to "handle the situation" in Tiananmen? In Washington DC, ANY human is allowed to take to the streets and protest against the US govt and its policies, w/o fear of being shot, & many Americans protested against the war Iraq.

  • By Beijing's own citizens, you mean students who believed they were making a difference by protesting, but were really protesting just for the sake of it, since those demos didn't have a unified cause.

  • @PringlesLover123 Why is America always involved in these arguments?

  • @PringlesLover123 And BTW, it wasn't a "Selfish War." We were attacked and two of our major buildings, which btw were used by the entire world, not just the U.S was destroyed.

People will use any opportunity to dis America.

  • @DaveFLBrn,

Yes, you were attacked and you had a legitimate reason to go to war with Afghanistan. However, there was no justification for going to Iraq and the whole world knows it.

  • And that you are a racist is also a fact. I dare you to go on your national television and yell that out loud, go see how many people will agree with you. It's easy to be a complete ignorant ass on the internet, but it's much harder when there are actual consequences.

(And for the record, Asians actually have weaker body odours compared to other races. Not that it matters, but just a thought)

  • @alfamenosuno
