Jakers, I'm a fool baying into the wind here, but I feel I must reply: it's a load of crap to be forever saying that "listening . . . is the ONLY way." My grandmother encouraged me to learn to read music from the beginning, and she born, rared, and died in musical West Clare. The Kilfenora CB, not long celebrating it's 100th anniversary, has cited how the original members were well versed in reading music. Rubbish to say there's only ONE way. Learn any way you can. Don't be so pedantic.
Learning Irish music through listening to it is the only way, but you wouldn't start with a tune like this. You need to get used to the phrasing - rhythmic and melodic - with tunes that aren't quite so idiosyncratic and challenging. If you want to learn to play Irish tunes, it's better to start with jigs than with reels. If you want to learn to play Irish music, you need to be quite obsessive and dedicated to listening to it as much as possible. Learning to play a reel this way takes years.
Wow! funtastic! Thats one of my favorite Irish reels. I only was this summer in Ireland and want to go ones again the next holiday. I like so much this kind of music! How much time did it takes to learn such a reel? Its almost impossible to learn a fiddle only by listening....I tried it several times. I play the violin too, but I make classic music.

@FreiherrVonHarris Don't be such a gom. Sheet music is only useful for playing Irish music if you already know how it sounds.
