However, I am clearly wrong because his vocals sound great here even if the instruments and back up singer don't sound too great right here.

Come on, Charles! You're probably the best damn vocalist i've heard since Bono or Tilian Pearson (Personally) but pretty much only in the studio. Those high notes are really tough... There are singers out there who hit notes like that on a night to night basis. He could too, its an issue of practice, taking care of your vocal chords and raw talent. Anyone can sound good in the studio, but truly great singers sound good consistently live.

I saw them in July. They instrumentals are tight, although the bassist scooped the highs and mids and distorted his bass (which as a bassist I hate). The vocals were okay, he hit some of the high notes, but he didn't go harsh on a lot of them, especially toward the end of the set. He also seemed really pitchy on even the easiest of parts. Still a rad band, and I still like them. I don't think I'd see them again though.
