Newcomer sprinter Ramil Guliyev is an ethnic Azerbijan native, and all 4 of his grandparents are Azerbijanis. Because he looks "white" and was raised partly in Russia, many people are going to claim him as the first WHITE man to break 10.00 for 100 meters, when he accomplishes this (if Christophe LeMaitre of France doesn't do it first).

Four (non african) athletes have broken 10 seconds. Poland's Marian Woronin ran a legal 9.992 in 1982 which rounds up, but is still under 10 seconds, Koji Ito of japan did so also clocked in 9.993 in 1998 and Australia's half aborigine/ half Irish Patrick Johnson ran 9.93. I love that this myth still exists, let's get over it people.

Both Koji Ito's 9.993 and Marian (not mario, by the way) Woronin's 9.992 were legal wind and both under 10 seconds. A little history lesson for you. Prior to January 1, 1977 IAAF records were kept to tenths of a second meaning only the last 30 years or so have records even been kept to hundredths. Since we now have the technology to record to thousandths, don't you think we will be keeping sprint records to the thousandths very soon?

Mennea ran 10.01 with no wind in '79, Nicolas Macrozonaris, 10.03 also with no wind in '03.

On top of that, Matt Shirvington ran 10.03 into a headwind in 98. Seemingly the real 'advantage' sprinters have recently is year round access to American competition. This point will be moot soon enough. Move on.

His coach was literally in TEARS because of it. The fact that he STILL wanted to go out there and try despite all of this shows A LOT about him.
