  • Was under the impression suffered from heart attack dude, is that what happens.

  • When I saw him inking a cover to Savage Dragon at Wondercon last year, I was blown away by how he held his pen. Looks like it would hurt, but then again he IS a master.

  • This guy Rocks ! Your comic books are cool ! (And I don't know if I wrote wrong !)

  • Doesn't matter how he holds his pen. What matters is the results. Erik Larsen creates one of the coolest character: Savage Dragon. And this is great.

  • Erik is really a great dude. And to think he is absolutely self taught... amazing

  • Weird way to hold the pen... but I like the overall finished work! :)

  • He admits he has a strange way of holding the pencil/ pen. But I like the final product, so nobody has complained as of yet.

Not that I am insinuating anyone is complaining.

  • Oh so he also admits... well until he feels comfortable. Everyone has his own way and approach.

    Peace!

  • Well, yeah, everyone has their own method to hold the pencil. There is the writing method, which I use to draw, or there is the butter knife method, where one holds the pencil like a butterknife buttering bread.

Erik's is more onto this method.

I know David Finch, who is not a patch on Erik in art terms, holds the lead holder in a truly weird way, and has made a ball of masking tape around the holder so as to prevent his thumb getting calloused, which was happening often.

  • Yeah David Finch! I saw his Gnomon DVD Workshop... I know to what you refer!

    Peace!

  • alot of illustrators do, its not like still life drawing or painting from a standing model, they have to visualize and put the shit on paper from thought without fucking it up 100 times. I can half ass draw but to make it look half worth a shit I have to hold the pen.... in a odd way.

  • JIM LEE THE BEST

  • Why say Jim Lee is best on an Erik Larsen video? Larsen is great too. I wouldn't go say Larsen is best on a Jim Lee vid, I'd just say Lee is best on a Jim Lee video. o_O

  • yer geeky. cool pic though

  • What kinda of pen is he using? this is great thanks fo tha upload!!

  • VERY very cool!

  • Erik Larsen is badass! Does he always draw like that? He holds his pen in a weird way....

  • Always draws like that. See "Understanding Erik Larsen" in Savage Dragon #100 or in Super Patriot:America's Fighting Force #4 by Chris Eliopoulos.

  • Sweet...some kind of ancient style... looks uncomfortable though...

  • @KnightCrawler2 he holds it that way so he doesnt have any blocks of view and not to get any ink smears from his hand thats why I draw in that same fashion.

  • Hey awesome...Im a fan of Celsius ex leader of the Doom Patrol and would love a Larson picture of her!

Something like freezing Shrapnel. I have Celsius drawn by George Perez, Jimmy Cheung, Phil Jimenez, Gary Frank, David Ogilvie, Waiton, Adrian Kinnaird and theyre looking spectacular!

  • Fucking sweet!

    Long Live Larsen!

  • pure awesomeness
