It's a statement by the songwriter that adds to the depth of the song. You can be a Buddha, Jewish or atheist to sing the line as it wasn't meant to be about the singer but rather referring to a person. Also you can be a Christian and fear vengeance from above if you've done, or think you've done, something wrong. It doesn't mean it will come, but it can still be a feeling or maybe they're too hard on themselves. Whatever. Put the line in already.
@Eatthesimia it's because the original lyric is "like a Christian FEELING vengeance from above" Brooke probably omitted the line because she is not going to say something that isn't in line with what she believes. God does not act with vengeance...a Christian would never feel that. There is consequences for sin but not punishment inflicted with vengeance.
@avocadoyumm If she found that lyric so troubling, I can't help but wonder why didn't she just pick another Neil Finn song to cover? Her beliefs are her own business, but no one forced her to cover this particular song and editing Neil's lyrics comes across as petty and a little disrespectful.
@Epicurus341 Neil won't let Brooke do the cover if he didn't approve of her changing the lyrics in the first place. It's like what you said, no one forced her to cover it and edit a part of it. To each his own.
@richiellavideo Under copyright law Neil Finn can not stop her (or anyone else) covering his songs. The law dictates that he must receive credit and royalties, but legally he can not forbid someone from recording a cover version.
So there's no evidence for, or against, the idea that Neil approved the change.
Great version! Heard it first on Jonathan Brooke Pandora station more than 18 months ago and could not buy it from iTunes. Thanks so much for posting this!
One of the best covers ever. It's a shame that this record isn't available in Germany

Leaving out lyric line = Lame.

Pretty funny that she omits 'like a Christian fearing vengeance from above' from her cover. And by funny I mean pathetic.

She makes this song sound as beautiful as it was intended; but 'better than the original'...? Original is a pretty hard gig to top
