  • for some reason the fluteysolobreak reminds me of Arcade Fire.........

  • I am glad they got the recognition they deserved in New Zealand, Australia, and some of Europe.

  • 23 AND COUNTING peeps WHO ARE STUCK IN 2012

  • MTV 80's is in 2012 YOUTUBE

  • did Argentina really think they could take on the British Empire??

  • @toronto105 Could never understand why HMG banned this little number back in '82 during The Falklands Campaign as no one could seriously believe a leaky boat would carry these chaps for half a bloody year anywhere on Her Majesty's High Seas !

  • Classic.

  • Split Enz will always be the favourites in NZ

  • brilliant

  • 106.7 KROQ LOS ANGELES

  • Theres no band quite like these guys, very original and clever musicians. There ideas are way up there with the best of them.

  • I remember sitting down in i think grade 3 in New Zealand and we had to sing this song for Assemblies and for some reason even kapa haka >.> i loved those days <3

  • you guys soooo gooood so lets rock and roooool love you

  • FFFFFfffffiiiiiIIIIooooOOOOnnaaaaaa

  • Goddamn the scenes in Modern Collective with this song was just full of ripping!

  • hahaha i remember when we used to sing this song at school

  • fucking cracking little tune when it kicks off

  • How Lame I Love This Song And I'm 13 Years Old And I Don't Care What People Think Of Me And What Type Of Music I Love <3

  • @ChelseaFelicia101 OMG! I'm 13 too! I thought I was the only 13 yr old left who liked them :P I've only met 2 people my own age who know who they are, and they said: Oh, they're soooo old, my mum likes them! How can you like them!? and I'm like: Go listen to your crappy LMFAO, idiot -_-

  • this song was stolen outright from the wiggles! copyright infringement??

  • @luigi636 oh god

  • @luigi636 Are you trolling by any chance?! If not, I can assure you that this song was written by Tim Finn and Split Enz and was recorded and released by them in 1982. Tim sang backing vocals for the Wiggles version in 2000 and was in the video, too.

  • @weirdunclebob you expect me to believe the split enz had a time machine? 1982.. who wrote songs in 1982?

  • @luigi636 o.O What drugs are you on?!

  • i wish people my age actually listened to good music like this, instead of Lil' wayne and his shit excuse for "music"

  • @JDOG1151994 Same :/ kids at my school like LMFAO and Lil Wayne...ugh, -_- every band I like to them, is either 'old' or 'lame', because I listen to bands that came out before the year 2000 and because I listen to rock and metal instead of techno and hip hop :(

  • AOTEAROA

  • Went to see them back in '82 for the Time and Tide tour; best concert I've ever been to.

  • I emigrated to NZ in 1972 from England when i was 7 years old, and we went by ship.....to me, this song is about going out to aoteoroa, and all that came after.....I guess the song is brilliant because you can attach any meaning you want to it (and England to win world cup in NZ, 2011)

  • I like the dude at 3.55 doing his funny eye thing ...... lol gotta love the natives.

  • This is one of old videos I saw when I was a little kid and was like WTF this is awesome, so I'm glad to have gotten it once again!

  • i learnt this song in primary school! :D

  • Split Enz was in integral part of my youth. I am forever grateful to MTV (back when they actually played music videos, no commercials...) for introducing this incredible band to me. RockOn!!

  • use to sing this in school assemblies back in NZ XD love this song

  • Aa-oo-tt--ee--aa-rr-oo-aa

  • this is just a great song period....

  • Is the Native Adam Baldwin?

  • Reminds me of cities of gold theme tune at the beginning!

  • I like this song but hate fucing intro...

  • @LukaszLKW Well you just friggin don't get it then. lol

  • Oh how I havent heard this song in so long. I miss it.

  • Great song for an under-rated band. At least some of the finally found true success with Crowded House.

  • this song brings joy to my mate jason he has no idea why like...

  • @airehk It's simple: They found New Zealand. That's what the music video is literally about.

  • Happy Birthday, Tim Finn!

  • Fantastic Song Great Group!

  • life can be so cruel. this should have been tims finest moment

  • Starts at 1:30

  • This song is off their "Time and Tide" Album from 1982. Not a dud on the whole album. One of the best Albums put out in the Eighties. Had most of the guys in my recon platoon in Panama sitting around smoking fantastic ganja, eating mushrooms and listening to bands like this. A very magical period of my life the 4 years spent in Panama. Andrew

  • @apotts60 1989?

  • @christschool No I was there from 1981-1985. First on the Atlantic side at Ft Davis then moved to the Pacific side at Ft Clayton. Married me a Panamanian girl and consider the time spent there the happiest period of my life. Take care, Andrew

  • I saw Ted Leo and the Pharmacists perform this song in concert last year which was a surprise to me. And it sounded good too.

  • kiwi assssssss!!! music

  • First heard this great song in Chile in 1982

  • Whatever this song is about or how it came about, I just know that it is one of the great songs I remember from my youth. It brings back nostalgic feel good feelings. Love it!

  • Its a very very good song, this band was superb and under rated.

  • 6 months to sail from Britain to NZ in the settler days 170 years ago would drive some people mad.

  • 3:23 sounds like a Super Mario game....

  • this song and film clip always makes me think of the adventures of my many greats grandfather who was a royal navy officer sent to nz who fell in love with and married a maori girl.

  • That is GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I've been a crowdies fan for years, but it's taken me til now to discover split enz. Better late than never I suppose!

  • elit smiths doppelgängers.

  • I think the first half of the video is actually pretty good....then it kind of becomes corny....

  • @jeff98211 oh, what the hell do you know?

  • For more than twenty years I was singing " Hey I'll tell ya I'm an rugged individual".

No offense to the Maoris and Aotearoa, how I got one from the other shames me.

  • I was on stand by for the Falklands

  • @zefer14 who cares?

  • @zefer14 Seriously, who cares...?

  • @MrHashiesnthemoenin

you obviously do, enough to respond to him twice...

  • @fellXhouseXranger - Who are you? His gay boyfriend....? Mind your business you dumb f@g.

  • @MrHashiesnthemoenin

my business?? it's the comments section on youtube idiot, i was just calling you on you're bullshit...in you're own words "who cares", now don't reply and grow up

  • @fellXhouseXranger YEP, definitely his gay boyfriend. Don't tell people not to reply either, it only makes you look more gay. There's nothing wrong with being gay either if you want to be - you were born that way, just admit it though. PS - your gay closing sentence should say "in YOUR own words" not "YOU'RE" - that means 'you are'. Dont call someone an idiot until you can read and write.

  • @MrHashiesnthemoenin

    what does dont mean??

  • @fagXhouseXranger its not an English exam. Theres a bit of a difference between a lack of punctuation and using the completely wrong word. Typical sort of thing for a gay to notice though... Are you sure you are supposed to even be on this page? I imagine you probably came across this page accidentally when you were searching for '6 months in a leaky bum'. Fuck you're gay...

  • this still sounds great after all these years, what a great band they were, these guys had a brilliant imagination with their songwriting.

  • I thought it was just a good ol new wave song back in 83 when it came out. I didn't know it had all this controversy wow to be 16 n naive lol

    !!!

  • how would this effect moral of troops in the falklands conflict ? Bizarre

  • @superzapper effect families of soldiers sailing to the south atlantic.....

  • Probably the most beautiful song released that year (1982). Shame on BBC. Thanks for posting. It was a HUGE hit in Brazil.

  • adding a comment - you tube is being difficult

  • Not sure what weirdunclebob is going on about but it's a bloody good song

  • God I wish I grew up in the seventies and eighties...

  • @KirbyPownsYou 80's best period of course! Best innovatve music period and girl and boy look sexy without need to be naked ! my teenager period missed me! exeption for my face acne LOL

  • @KirbyPownsYou Don't; you get the music with out the mid-life crisis.

  • I'd read that this song is not about drugs, nor the settling of New Zealand (though that may have been an undertone) but a metaphor for a nervous breakdown the lead singer Tim Finn had experienced.

  • i love the last 60 seconds sooo much. wish it was longer. my fav part of the song

  • that Maori girl had such a cute smile.....

  • well at least the verse does

  • @kairly1 Nowaqy

  • this sounds very similar to a day in the life the words that is

  • I was told the song was a metaphor in reference to doing cocaine. Alot of the songs can be refering to doing drugs.

  • Don't make fun of that guy at 3:50 okay...thats how they look right before they cut you're balls off.

  • OMG i have been looking for this song for about 25 years, when they played it in the background of the Australian soap 'Home and Away'....a young girl who was dying of Leukemia and her guy...(Brant? Brandon?) took a trip on an old galleon and this was playing and i fell in love with it but no one knew what it was or who it was by...but just heard it on radio paradise, looked at name, typed it in google and here is the video!!! OMG, thankyou!!

  • Just to clear things up:

    1. This song was written and recorded a month before the Falklands invasion.

    2. It was never banned but DJs were asked to consider carefully what they played during the conflict. In essence, they were discouraged from playing it.

    3. The song is actually a metaphor for what Tim went through during and after his break up with his wife.

    4. I learnt this from less than five minutes of research on the web. =P

    5. Split Enz were an integral part of my youth. Thanks fellas! =P

  • @weirdunclebob It may be a metaphor, but it's also explicitly about the settling of New Zealand. I mean, by Europeans. Maori don't count.

  • @weirdunclebob I was on the other side of the world in Dublin...but I remember it well. I am now in Sydney, next door to these kiwis!

  • @weirdunclebob Which is rather strange considering it's a New Zealnd song talking about the settlers journey to NZ taking 6 months...the tyranny of distance.

  • @anvilofcrom Yeah, analogies are like that.

  • @weirdunclebob Number 4 is such a lie you motherfucker

  • @Simslover19483 Why do you think I'm lying? What point would there be in that? After reading a few conflicting comments here, I looked it up on the web, mainly on Wikipedia. I cross referenced that with a few other sites and all that took around five minutes. (Just fyi, my father was a librarian and I've spent my whole life knowing how to do proper research, thanks to him, so maybe I'm just better at it than you?!) Whatever. Calling me a mofo is a bit harsh, anyway.

  • First time i`ve heard this. Superb. Off to track the album this is from down shortly.

  • SOMEONE CUT OUT THE GDAMN BEGINNING

  • @MrSirSnoozealot You can't drag past the beginning Mr. Whinesalot?

  • Please don't shoot me...but somehow i was never into this band. I didn't like Tim Finn's attitude. In all fairness he was the brains behind the band.

However I loved this song and shark attack.

I was into The Angels, The Church, Serious Young Insects,Little Murders, Icehouse and Mi-Sex.

  • Did you know this song was banned in the uk .....

  • @ouch1978 The BBC is a little bent sometimes.

  • Awesome tune

  • fantastic band....

  • I LUV THIS SONG I LUV THIS SONG I LUV THIS SONG AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. the funny thing is, i first heard it on the wiggles. I fell in love with it strait away. Funny, huh?

  • @twiightluva

    me too lol

  • @twiightluva I heard first from the Wiggles, too. I was watching an episode of their show when this song came on. Very catchy, and I had to find out who the original singers where. Enjoyed the song and the band every since. :-)

  • talk about creative writing.... excellent and one of my if not favorite Split Enz songs

  • Great song...silly vid...that's the "80's for U...LOL & LOL,,,

    thankz for the post...tomgrass,,<3

  • The intro and then the ending from 4:41-on. Pure brilliance.

  • Comment removed

  • absolute masterpiece. no one today can write a song about sailing as an allegory to a break-up. neil and tim finn = two of the best songwriters ever to walk the earth

  • Absolutely brilliant song. I remember I first heard it in 1983 on a Garuda Airlines flying machine on my way out down under for a so called working holday. I've loved it ever since, takes me back to simpler, dare I say happier days!!

  • god what a long fuckin intro to this killer song, felt like six months!!!!!!!

  • Thanks Rhodesta, but grievoushark thinks differently,so who is right? Just wanna settle an ol score with a Pommie mate of mine.

  • Love this song, we DID play on board ship while in harbour in the Ascensions while on route to the Falklands - caught royal crap from the SM for it too he was soo sea sick LOL Thanks for the song Split Enz!

  • God I miss NZed, this song always brings me back there in my mind. Some day I'll be back, can't wait til that day!!!

  • I believe it was banned because a person died during the british yacht race The fastnet, the song was released at that time and was not deemed appropriate in the circumstances.

  • @grievoushark nah because of what happen during the excoet missile strike that sunk three ships during the Falklands war

the single came out at the same time .

  • Brilliant!!!

  • They used to make us sing this in school. Even though that wasn't exactly the best memory, this song has one of the best melodies EVER.

  • Why oh Why did the POMS ban this great little tune

  • @Iby4nw8z poms banned it cos it might have made their {already homesick} sailors homesick....

  • @Iby4nw8z It came out during the Falklands War, and the UK government thought it was going to affect the morale of the soldiers. They were heading down to the South Atlantic on a leaky boat.

  • %The beat makes me air hump....maybe its a good song for loving, rythm seems right.

  • Saw Finns do this live, good song, but what a preposterous intro. A minute and a half, sheesh. Great memorable sound and hooks though.

  • flavor country is still my #1 from sandbox

  • i heard this on modern collective and now i listen to it soo much

  • Modern collective!

  • best video ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Love the intro......Perhaps someone could do a video using the E. Walder and BP oil spils

  • OMG, I have been trying to find this song for ages! I love You Tube! Thanks for posting this! Memories of summer of 82!

  • I was only about 12 years old when this came out but remember sitting on the back deck of the cruise ship Oriana in Auckland harbour listening to this on my radio.

I believe this song was banded from the airwaves in the UK by Maggie Thatcher cos it came out at the same time as the Falkland War and the sinking of a British navy ship.

  • @xr6lad

The BBC would not play it incase it damaged morale during the Falklands. Its about mental illness. For real mental illness, check out the Wiggles version. Surreal.

  • @gerretl

    Yea - like argentina now won't play f*ck*d on a rocky island....LOL

  • @gerretl oh well then, if the wiggles told you, then it must be so..

  • U did an awesome job doing this video! I love this song and have also been looking for it for a long time along with other 80's songs. Thanks for posting it. :)

  • Love these two Enz songs and the video is and was always great.

  • Just found out the Original Jethro Tull VIDEO for "Too Old for Rock and Roll" isn't available here. I can't BelIEVE it. Somebody dropped the ball. Upload it as soon as possible. There is a compilation from I think 2000, I haven't the gear, YouDo it please!

  • New Zealand all the way

  • 2:35 - right up there on my list of "Creepiest Faces Ever Made in a Music Video". I can't stop watching it.

  • @eldatari I saw a FUNNY face made, you wanna see creepy, try Jethro Tull "To Old To Rock and Roll" when they are drinking tea for no reason.

  • modern collectivee

  • intro is too long and the native scenes lame

  • @sally2222727

the "native scenes" were a play on "kiwiana". it's cute. americans call their classic kitsch "americana". it's not meant to be taken seriously. think michel gondry and home made beauty of his videos...except this video was made much earlier.

  • HMAS AUSTRALIA will save the crew of the leaking boat where are located,RODGER out!

  • @berowra7 almost worse than waiting for a pool which will never be built!

  • wtf this is so good loved it fast/

  • A virtual Classic to say the least!!!

  • major classic-brings back awesome memories

  • I adore this song---thanks a ton for giving us this!

  • is this song in the movie where the wild thigs are???

  • it's a song about New Zealand , Aotearoa is Maori for New Zealand , well i guess it's more about the white man coming to new zealand really .

  • A very nautical song.

    The Anthem of Sailing !!

  • no it was released during v falkland conflict n when hms sheffield was sunk they banned it from radio in case it upset people in uk. ver r references to discovery n gratitude to sailors who did it. inte4resting concept of being about personal difficulties- hadnt considered that!

  • transparent s ea!

  • Amazing song and video :-)

  • unique video i like it however becuase it is not like any other music video on VH1, MTV, MTV2, MTV X that i have ever seen but then again New Wave in the early 80's only caught on in Germany, New Zealand, England, Ireland, Northran Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

  • Even XM/Sirius doesn't know this band exists. It's sad. Thank God for YouTube.

  • Even XM/Sirius doesn't know this band exists. It's sad. Thank God for YouTube.

  • Even XM/Sirius doesn't know this band exists. It's sad

  • love this tune

  • always wanted 2 b a pirate :)

  • Long enough intro?

  • On the CD, the intro is a separate song. But even still, it's so amazing.

  • One of the absolute greatest all time songs ever :)

  • I love the tape deck quality

  • Wasn't this about when they discovered New Zealand?

  • nah its about Tim Finn's mental breakdown
