Colombia fought a 40 year war with FARC, the exact same stuff was happing there that was happening in Afghanistan. A corrupt government, a corrupt army, a porous border, FARC used drug money to finance its operations and instead of hiding in the mountains, they were hiding in the jungle. Within the last 10 years FARC went from controlling 50% of Colombia to controlling less than 2%. Drug crops dropped 26%. Obviously this kind of enemy can be defeated, but it has to be by the locals.

There's a reason for that as well, Americans assisted the Mujahideen during that long and painful struggle in an attempt to do to the Soviets what they had done to us. We turned Afghanistan into a Vietnam for them, providing weaponry, financial aid, even aiding them with the use of spy satellites. Every time I see people brag that Afghanistan hasn't been conquered since Alexander the Great, it very well could have between 1979-1989 had we not stepped in. We even gave them stinger missiles.

On a side note, the United States was not the only country who assisted the Mujahideen. Pakistan, the U.K., Egypt, China, and Iran even got their hands dirty in the support of the Mujahideen. No one wins wars in Afghanistan (Khurasan). I hope outside governments do rethink what their doing and look into providing just security for the current Afghan government and that's it. The rest can be taken care of. To sum it up, help our government be secure and stable, assist in building schools and hospitals, assist in building power plants and water reservoirs. Everyone should remember that we did recruit, fund, and arm Al-Qaeda against the Soviets. But that being said we should rethink our strategy in Afghanistan. There was never a discussion before about whether we should escalate the war in Afghanistan. It was merely assumed that Afghanistan represented the right war to fight and Iraq the wrong one. That is why we're calling for Congressional oversight hearings regarding this war, and why we're holding debates on the issues surrounding it.

We could use more troops to hold fort. But we really need is things we have here in the U.S. power, water, schools, hospitals and jobs. Here's the thing, 80% of Afghanistan is on our side, we need to take advantage of that and build an infrastructure. When the Soviets went in, only 20% of the Afghans were on the Soviets side. 20% of Afghans are the ones that are the problem but set that aside and help the 80%. When the 20% sees the changes, they will put their weapons down.

If you want to end the war in Afghanistan you will need to kill most of the Afghans. They don't have sport, they have war. Of course to actually win, I can't see how any alternative exists to cleaning out Pakistan as well. Pakistan was founded by murderous muslim fanatics, is nuclear armed, hated by its neighbors, and is a failed state by any objective measure of internal unity. The region will not be at peace until Pakistan is pacified.

We will dump billions of dollars, and have more death to American soldiers and civilians, and when we leave, everything will return to what is was before we arrived, but with greater sympathy towards rebels and terrorists from the locals. I learned that we'll be in Afganistan a long time...way longer then the soviets were...unless we use nukes which isn't an option.. lol.. and there will be a draft even if we don't go into battle with Iran because we can't sustain our war with just a voluteer army. And of course there's the Iran problem. The American people are screwed either way. The average highchool and college graduates are gonna get drafted. I see.......
