I don't know if James Arness won any awards for this performance, but he should have. He showed his great acting ability in this scene, made it so believeable. I love Gunsmoke, watch it every day. Thanks for posting this.
Charles Bronson as a panicky backshooter. Who would've thunk it? But there is only one other person who could outshoot Bronson and that's Sheriff Matt Dillon.
I just saw a very funny dub on "blackmaskmike" channel. About this exact scene. You guys should check it out! Its so freaking hilarious. I think its called "Gunsmoke Dub"....BTW: I did not make it, but it is so freaken funny. Similar to Jaboodydubs only this guy didn't use any special effects.

@Parrotluver2 Just because a man does not let his rod and balls rule his body, you can' t accuse him of being homosexual. Many women go very long periods of not having sex. Do you really want to accuse them of being homosexual. No Matthew Dillion was a honest quality man.
My Grandfather(I had Two,Knut Kallmyr, and George Formby(Biological)),liked to watch "Gunsmoke" with James Arness as MATT DILLON,the Sheriff......
He knew. And My Cousin Astrid, she said "Onkle Skrue-that was a Man who did not want to Pay Delivery money, for Purchasing Milk. But that was Helge,Knuts son,who was at that time Onkle Skrue....I remember....
The part of Matt Dillon was offered to John Wayne, but he in turn asked the powers that be to consider James Arness as seeing that that were friends and had made a lot of movies together and as they say the rest was history.
I love the end of this episode, in classic Marshal Dillon badass fashion, like at the end of "Passive Resistance". In episodes like these two, the dudes are scum, killing innocent people without a care, and Dillon takes it personally. The half hour episodes from the 50's remain the pure classics. Gritty and hard, Dillon put up with zero nonsense from trash in these, and this is what made Gunsmoke and Dillon icons. You start shit in Dodge, when Marshal Dillon comes for you, you're over.
Totally agree, Mister Master Shafter. Dillon was stone cold all business in the 1950s shows. He protected the innocent and gladly smoked the rest any chance they gave him to. The 30min shows were crisper and more raw.
@Tiberius0001 Yeah. Unlike many today, but much like the old west, Americans in the 50's knew right and wrong, without all the bleeding heart lib fairytale babble and refusal to hold scum accountable for their own destructive actions. Much like the last act of "Passive Resistance", Dillon again with a bully scumbum, wasn't about to let him leave Dodge after his cowardly murderous actions.
@MisterMasterShafter : conservatives know right from wrong, until it's a rich man stealing billions of dollars... then they call them a hero. You guys have lots of balls, until it's time to prosecute a president for ordering torture.
@theoriginalmrsm You and your idiotic leftist gibberish have no place in America or on a YouTube Gunsmoke video. Go smoke some more dope and get back to your Michael Moore section.
@MisterMasterShafter YOU NEED TO CLIMB BACK IN YOUR CAVE YOU SKUM.MAYBE YOU SHOULD GO TO THE MICHAEL MOORE SECTION MAYBE YOU WOULD LEARN SOMETHING ABOUT BEING A HUMAN BEING.WHEN YOU WATCH GUNSMOKE YOU MUST BE LEARNING FROM THE BAD GUYS.GUNSMOKE'S A GREAT SHOW WHO DON'T NEED A SIMPLETON LIKE YOU.YOU RICH SKUM!
@MisterMasterShafter Your right on, my friend. theoriginalmrsm and miss alucoq need to wake up and smell reality. Dillon showed what being a real, responsible, moral human being is all about, which is honesty, loyalty, courage, and responsibility. I can just hear these other two ding-dongs talking now -- "I think only the people responsible for protecting me should have guns, blah, blah, blah." (just imagine that spoken with a weak, whining voice)
@Tiberius0001 THE 50'S AND THE 60'S SHOWS WERE VERY GOOD. Once they got into the later years, there were way too many cheesy characters and it didnt keep your attention the way the old shows did. They were really classic westerns and tense climax/shootouts. When they got to the point, the end of the story it was worth waiting for. Even the one liners at the end where Chester or Dillon would make a final comment!
James Arness-WW2 Hero, fought at Anzio and was severely wounded there. His actions during WW2 earned him a Bronze Star and purple heart. He went on to earn 3 additions to his Bronze Star....that's like earning 4 Bronze Stars.
Charles Bronson-WW2 hero. Tailgunner on B29 bombers and was wounded earning Purple Heart.
This Matt is very out of character with the Matt from the later Fetus era. This Matt is much colder, almost a different person than the later version. The later Matt is more warm and likable, I guess this why they usually don't show the repeats of the Chester era early Matt.
As Gunsmoke matured on TV, Matt Dillon would never have instigated a gunfight as he did here. In the early days Dillon was somewhat of a rogue himself... a carryover from the radio show days.
Legally, Dillon crossed the line when he not only challenged Bronson to a duel, but say he'd kill him anyway if he didn't go outside. In real life, Bronson's character would have a strong case for self defense.
Well he COULD have, but remember, "Mr.DIllon" was listening for that particular VOICE which could ONLY come from Chester. Any other voice and THEY may have gotten SHOT themself!

What the hell was Marshall Dillon doing? He's no better than a vigilante in his motives for killing Rego. "I'm doing this without my badge." Great! So he sets aside his badge when the law becomes an incumbrance and acts at his own discretion? This is BS. Dillon is supposed to be a good man that we can respect.
Toad, you are very lucky to believe in the fantasy of all people should be treated equally and fairly, no matter what they have done.
Don't worry the fist dose of raw cruelty some robber or rapist or bugler puts you through, the sooner you will grow up and realize there are truly bad/cruel people that need to be removed.
I've not confused law and vigilante justice. The type of justice enacted by Dillon goes against the legal institutions he is sworn to uphold. His actions are neither necessary nor meritorious. Rather Dillon is shown to be unethical and irresponsible. By the end of the clip he has become the man he killed: a criminal who follows the law only as long as it suits him. If justice was achieved in this killing, it was at the expense of Dillon's integrity and the respect given the Marshall's office.
>>"The type of justice enacted by Dillon goes against the legal institutions he is sworn to uphold"
Yes, the institution that would arrest him, spend thousands of public fund on some rich lawyer, turn around and release him back into the streets to kill again. Yes, that's the kind of justice this toad brain bryer is talking about.
did you see the whole episode? I didn't but from all the other episodes of Gunsmoke that I saw I KNOW that Marshal Dillon always acted lawfully. so Charles Bronson (originally: Ch. Buchinsky) had DESERVED to die! you bet your ass on it!

I hate to correct, but I can remember two instances where Matt lost.
One was when Bette Davis' character got the drop on him and was about to kill Matt before Kitty shot her.
The other was in a 1974 Gunsmoke episode, the last of the original series. Matt is killed in that episode in a gunfight.
