lol......thats a game. and NO that is not possible in real life. Even in the game he would have gone off the end of the deck or taken out the tower with a wing.
Could this ever happen in real life? Like if an American Airlines jet had engine trouble over the Pacific, and the only landing strip available was a military carrier?
There are many military airbases still throughout the Pacific, and more than enough accommodating countries out there that would harbor a 747 (Or any other jet) if they had trouble. The plane might run off the runway, but otherwise probably be safe. I doubt a aircraft carrier would be able to do anything other than launch helicopters to try and find survivors after a water landing if no other option was available.
The LA (landing area) on a carrier is not anywhere near wide enough to handle a jst that size. It's barely wide enough to handle an E-2C with much room between the wingtips and foul lines
No, the wingspan is too wide, the biggest aircraft to ever land on an aircraft carrier is a C-130 (vids on youtube) the navy was conducting a test to find a COD, after sufficient testing they picked the E-2C that 3rdIDGrunt is talking of.
i bet every passenger on that plane becomes the pilot after the landing.. their faces on the windshield... hahaha. good thing it wasnt possible landing that large a plane on a carrier.
I must say I have tried it, but try doing it without the arrestor cables program and then show us. The C-130 landed with its own stopping power no? This is FS9 (2004) as well so there is a HUGE difference in reality.
Scotty, it is FS2004. He has the Carriers 2006 package. You can find those carriers with the package by typing in the Airport ID of AC11 and so on. (01 to 14 I think)
Thats correct. It is FS2k4 and I have the Abacus Carrier Operations add-on. All of the airports (carriers) are listed under the country ID of 'Carrier Operations'. I am still trying to find carrier operations for FSX now. I understand that FSX acceleration has carriers but not with the catapult or arrester cables
I think that this would result in the total distruction of the plane and the carrier being seriously damaged too. In a real situation the pilot would probably lend the plane in the water nearby to the carrier for a prompt rescue of the passengers.
Remember that a C-130 Hercules landed on an aircraft carrier in the 60s. I realize that it's a bit smaller than a 747, but it at least proves that landing big planes is possible.. if only in theory.
Do you have any idea about the size of a Boeing 747?
C-130 is ~30 meters long with wingspan of 40 meters. 747 is 70 meters long with wingspan of 65 meters. Weight difference is huge also. 180 tons against 38 tons when they are empty.
747 takes 240 000 litres of fuel. I assume that jet fuel weights about kilogram per litre. So the weight of the fuel is three and a half times the maximum takeoff weight of C-130.
I don't believe that it's possible to make a aircraft carrier big enough. Bigger the vessel gets every bit of it's structure needs to be much stronger in every way. I'm trying to say that there is a maximum structural size in every thing. You just can't make 2 kilometer long aircraft carrier because materials available at present day have their limits.
I don't know if I'm making any sense. I'm not very good at explaining these things in English. =)
well the Jahre Viking is the worlds largest oil tanker. it is 1504 feet long and 226 feet wide.
my grandfather served on the USS Bataan... a cargo ship that was converted into a carrier during WWII.
so my take is... if your an oil tycoon and have billions of dollars to spend (just to prove you could land a 747 on a huge boat) you might be able to do it.

I remember watching a doco on Aircraft Carriers. They were so primitive initially - like you said cargo ships converted into aircraft carriers. They have come a long way since then.
I've tried this lots of times with FS2004. There was no way to stop the plane in less than 2000', even with a sink rate of 1800 and a ground speed of about 165kts, I just couldn't keep it on the deck. A faster sink rate causes the plane to crash into the deck. Any slower and it stalls. Try it with a C-130. It works.
LOL!! Btw, Even if you would want to equip a 747 with a hook, how bigass should that thing be? And how bigass and stronger should the cables be? Cos a 747 happens to have a little bit more momentum than a regular hornet...
Well, not only is that video cut off right after touchdown, but it shows no proof that you could bring it to a complete stop or have enough speed after touchdown to complete a touch and go. Also, if im not mistaken, you would have taken out the tower with the rightwing (Or the tower would have taken out your wing) but either way, this video does not stand up to its description
there are aircraft carriers all over FSX. Just do a Google search and it will tell you where they are. I go to the one in San Diego and the one in Virginia. They come standard with fsx and fsx deluxe. The catapult and the arresting wire is part of an abacus mission pack for fsx. It's called Flight Deck 4.
I have seen a cable break and the hook break. FYI - there were 4 (maybe 3) arresting cables on my ship (USS RANGER CV-61). It took 3 days to repair. The day the repairs were finish the hook failed on an F14. When the F14 caught the wire, the hook broke changing the direction of the F14 to strike 4 other planes sending 2 in the water and causing a small fire.
Even if it had a hook it would not be able to stop. The hook would rip off. If it didn't, the arresting cables would be ripped out of the deck. If none of the above happened, the plane itself would be ripped in half.
Even with Microsoft's failing physics, you'll never land after that flare.

Is a carrier wide enough to allow an aircraft with such a huge wingspan to even land?
LeeNova69 4 years ago
Maybe with every plane off the deck but with the planes on the deck I don't think it's possible.

considering the possibility for the 747 to land... the carrier deck should be at least 200 ft wide.
