I agree with "having your way with a piece is OK because we already know the original" but I do feel he is breaking up the flow of the song too much here with his ad-libs.

Here's why Zakk shouldn't play it the exact same way, note for note just like Randy... Cause he's not Randy. He's Zakk.. and he's got his own style of playing. Like someone already said, you wanna hear the Randy Rhoads version, listen to the CD, look up some live videos.

Zakk Wylde is a fucking drunk clown, and his pinched harmonic squealing vibrato thing is annoying. He brutalizes Randy Rhoads solos. Those that mistake his squealing shit vibrato for 'emotion' are brain dead. He is a musical Neanderthal compared to RR (and, surprisingly enough, he LOOKS like a Neanderthal).
the randy version is fucking 30 years old. randy gave rock n roll a major kick in the ass, which has carried on after his death. the way zakk plays this riff is that original wake up call randy gave rock n roll coming back to his own composition, through zakk wylde.
anytime i hear zakk playing randy tunes, i like to think if randy was still here, he'd be changing them up, playing them now with more fire and flash than the original. maybe playing them like zakk does.
the fact that he's playing it like that on RANDY'S guitar makes me sick!!! he needs to get some respect for randy, if it wasnt for randy, he wouldnt be able to play crazy train!!!
i dont think zakk sucks... at his own game. I just wish that he would respect Randy and stop fucking up his music! He can do what ever he wants with his own shit but when he plays Randy's music he could at least play it the way it was written.
@JimmyF95 I think he plays a lot Randy's stuff better than Randy played it. I like the way he plays I Don't Know better. I don't care for the palm muting on Crazy Train, but everything else is awesome. Mr. Crowley the way Zakk plays it is incredible. For a player to sit back and play something note for note, exactly the same as someone else is boring and uninspiring.
I also think its worth noting that for the great majority of it Zakk plays the songs very closely. He throws in fills in between the riffs and what not but guess what? Randy did too! There is not "definitive version" of the song because even Randy played it slightly differently each time. Its music, not science. As Zakk himself so elequently said " I don't want to fucking see a replica of the fucking CD. I can always listen to that at home and jerk off in my bedroom with the lights down."
The way Zakk plays the song is the way Randy would have wanted it. Randy encouraged his students to stray away from learning other people's songs and find their own voice and style. Zakk has his own style and while it might not suit everybody it is definitely his own and he applies it to everything he plays. Nothing Zakk plays sounds like anything but Zakk's playing. That is what Randy wanted from his pupils more than people replicating songs note by note, using the exact same setup, etc.
I like Zakk, and I think he definitely deserves real credit as being a damn good guitarist.
Yet I think its a bit silly to even compare him with Randy. Both have such different musical and playing styles. Its like comparing an apple to an orange. Both are good fruits. But tasting that apple makes you forget about the orange. Like what the fuck is an orange anyway? Zakk Wyld??? The name sounds vaguely familiar. Didn't he play in some movie or something?
To be Honest, I really think this two way decision on if Zakk should play it how Randy Wrote it is just stupid....
Think about it, Bucket Head done a cover of crazy train and pulled it off note for note like Randy but it lacked Sooo much emotion it just sounded really... plain, and not fun at all?
A guitarist Nuno Bettencourt told me that if your gonna learn something learn it wrong, or your own way and play it how you feel best, because if you don't your not learning anything at all...
@JackOliverWolf i would dissagree a bit with that...i would say that firstly, you d better learn the way that the song was written....be able to play it without any problems, and then bring the riff/song to your style...
@JackOliverWolf Soooo fucking true Wolfman!! In my 25yrs of playing,all the guys who play covers note for note just sound forced. Music is art and art is emotion and not something you squeeze out of a machine,starts with a human. I personaly like Randy more because there's more emotion in his playing than Zakk's. Zakk alot of the time ,especially in the last 12yrs, is all smoke and mirrors. You can still say way more with 10 notes than 1600.
@JackOliverWolf I agree if you in the way that we should be ourselves while playing something someone wrote. However, I believe how to play how someone wrote a particular song doesn't stop you from learning. It gives you the chance to alter whatever you want from the original. When I learn a song, I always add my twist but I play like the original song. It still becomes my version and I still learned a song in the end.
@JackOliverWolf Welcome To Buckethead land wasn't a cover he just borrowed the fill from Crazy Train, the triplet part, and maybe the first 3 notes of the main riff. And btw Buckethead put more emotion into that song then Zakk put's in all his solos combined, not ripping on Zakk but come on are you really going to compare and experimental/avant-garde composing GOD to some Viking
Playing songs the original way is a total fucking bore, if you wanna hear the CD go home turn the lights down and listen to the goddamn CD. Zakk is the biggest RR fan on the planet AND he had RR's old job so, as far as I'm concerned, Zakk can play the Oz tunes however the hell he wants to.
@groovebrew You're right, but sometimes Zakk exagerates changing classic songs and that must never happen: I mean, a classic is a classic. It's good to express your own personality playing your own way, but you can do it with your own songs, written by you. Since a classic song was written by a legendary musicians, it ought to be played the most similar to the original possible. However, when Zakk wants to, he's very capable of playing RR's stuff and to imitate, adding some innovation, hi style
He doesn't exaggerate in changing it, he just plays it in his own style. Every Musician has a style and when they play a cover then the style carries over and we get something such as this.

There's a HUUUGE difference between covering 'I Don't Know' versus something like 'Fur Elise'... something composed in 1810 and known the world over for well over a century has no room for embellishment (if you don't want things thrown at you). But Zakk worships RR and had his job for over 2 decades so, if anybody has license to do their own thing with Ozzy tunes, I'd say Zakk Wylde is that guy.
I understand both perspectives. Personally, whenever I play cover tunes, I go for playing them the way the originals played them because they don't sound right if I attempt to "originalize" them. Especially Randy. That's just my opinion as an experienced guitarist. If I joined a band and had to play someone else's songs, I'd go for the original version and on new songs written with me, do my own thing there. Just a thought.

@liambarker12 i think that he plays songs downtuned cause Ozzy cant sing from original tune anymore,it goes too high.Its same when he reunited with Sabbath,for example War Pigs was played from C#,when its originally played from standard tuning (E).of course its easier for Iommi to play ('cause his fingers) but its also easier for Ozzy to sing

@Crazy114125 Sure Randy wouldn't put all the pinch Harmonics in but Zakk had to change the songs up so he wouldn't be branded as a clone. I prefer all of Randys versions of the songs but I like Zakkk overall more I know Randy is a better player but I still like Zakk a bit more.
I've dumped on Zakk a lot. I basically don't like his sound. I think he forgoes sound quality for showing off. Randy's rendition has a great tone quality and is right for the song. ZAkk's is forced
and without good quality. With that said there is no denying the fact that he can really dominate the neck.
Having listened to the old "Blizzard of Oz & Diary of a mad man" Album's . I think what made Randy Unique sounding,, Was the fact (recording wise), you can Hear "Detail" in his finger accents / hammer ons ... each finger hitting each string ... It sound's so Clear ! It's simply Awesome !!! Zakk tends to get a mushy/blending Sound . ( especially after alot of BEER ) . Ha
I dont know about yall guys but i think pinch harmonics are cool. Especially zakks since they sound so heavy omn the low strings. Dont judge me- I'm a guitar player. Zakk is one of my main icons and his style is a WHOLE lot harder than Randys...
I definitely agree that harmonics of all varieties are very cool, (especially when tastefully used...or hell...not so tastefully used for that matter), and I really dig Zakk's soulful approach, and dig BLS. But man, no guitarist beyond intermediate level is going to agree that Zakk's style is harder that Randy's. Especially being that they are nearly identical, but with different rigs, technology, and more squealing on Zakk's part. Zakk will straight up tell you he is trying hard to be Randy.
Play completely different how? He uses the sames scales, the same modes. His feel for the instrument is what's different. The technology he is able to drench his signal in is different from what Randy had at his disposal. In fact, Randy would squeal from time to time as well, though not nearly as often. Simply on the merit that it took more effort to get proper intonation from the strings in Randy's day means a lot to me in this argument of who is a better guitarist.

listen to '87 Randy tribute Ozzy album... Zakk is a good guitar player, but if you compare with Randy he is a bad imitation. i hate his repetitive and unimaginative pinch harmonics.
In my opinion (just my opinion, of course, same as you), I think it wouldn't be possible to compare the two, being that Zakk skips a lot of Randy's notes with pinch harmonics. It's difficult to judge when one guitarist is playing the material of another, and is blatantly skipping parts. Now, I'm a harmonic junkie, so it doesn't bug me too much, but you've got to admit that he can be pretty cheap with them from time to time.
I don't know if you can play pinched harmonics, but if you can you surely must recognize that the amount of "effort" is minimal at best, especially with active pickups. When he pinches he is usually skipping at least two notes that previously resided there. Most obvious example of this would be his live version of Crazy Train. Now, let me reiterate that I love harmonics, but anyone who would suggest that Zakk's version is harder, simply hasn't tried playing both.

Here's why Zakk shouldn't play it the exact same way, note for note just like Randy... Cause he's not Randy. He's Zakk.. and he's got his own style of playing. Like someone already said, you wanna hear the Randy Rhoads version, listen to the CD, look up some live videos.

Zakk Wylde is a fucking drunk clown, and his pinched harmonic squealing vibrato thing is annoying. He brutalizes Randy Rhoads solos. Those that mistake his squealing shit vibrato for 'emotion' are brain dead. He is a musical Neanderthal compared to RR (and, surprisingly enough, he LOOKS like a Neanderthal).

the randy version is fucking 30 years old. randy gave rock n roll a major kick in the ass, which has carried on after his death. the way zakk plays this riff is that original wake up call randy gave rock n roll coming back to his own composition, through zakk wylde.
anytime i hear zakk playing randy tunes, i like to think if randy was still here, he'd be changing them up, playing them now with more fire and flash than the original. maybe playing them like zakk does.

I don't care for the palm muting on Crazy Train, but everything else is awesome. Mr. Crowley the way Zakk plays it is incredible. For a player to sit back and play something note for note, exactly the same as someone else is boring and uninspiring.

I also think its worth noting that for the great majority of it Zakk plays the songs very closely. He throws in fills in between the riffs and what not but guess what? Randy did too! There is not "definitive version" of the song because even Randy played it slightly differently each time. Its music, not science. As Zakk himself so elequently said " I don't want to fucking see a replica of the fucking CD. I can always listen to that at home and jerk off in my bedroom with the lights down."

The way Zakk plays the song is the way Randy would have wanted it. Randy encouraged his students to stray away from learning other people's songs and find their own voice and style. Zakk has his own style and while it might not suit everybody it is definitely his own and he applies it to everything he plays. Nothing Zakk plays sounds like anything but Zakk's playing. That is what Randy wanted from his pupils more than people replicating songs note by note, using the exact same setup, etc.

I like Zakk, and I think he definitely deserves real credit as being a damn good guitarist.
Yet I think its a bit silly to even compare him with Randy. Both have such different musical and playing styles. Its like comparing an apple to an orange. Both are good fruits. To be Honest, I really think this two way decision on if Zakk should play it how Randy Wrote it is just stupid....
Think about it, Bucket Head done a cover of crazy train and pulled it off note for note like Randy but it lacked Sooo much emotion it just sounded really... plain, and not fun at all?
A guitarist Nuno Bettencourt told me that if your gonna learn something learn it wrong, or your own way and play it how you feel best, because if you don't your not learning anything at all...

Music is art and art is emotion and not something you squeeze out of a machine,starts with a human. I personaly like Randy more because there's more emotion in his playing than Zakk's. Zakk alot of the time ,especially in the last 12yrs, is all smoke and mirrors. You can still say way more with 10 notes than 1600.

However, I believe how to play how someone wrote a particular song doesn't stop you from learning. It gives you the chance to alter whatever you want from the original. When I learn a song, I always add my twist but I play like the original song. It still becomes my version and I still learned a song in the end.

And btw Buckethead put more emotion into that song then Zakk put's in all his solos combined, not ripping on Zakk but come on are you really going to compare and experimental/avant-garde composing GOD to some Viking

It's good to express your own personality playing your own way, but you can do it with your own songs, written by you. Since a classic song was written by a legendary musicians, it ought to be played the most similar to the original possible. However, when Zakk wants to, he's very capable of playing RR's stuff and to imitate, adding some innovation, hi style

There's a HUUUGE difference between covering 'I Don't Know' versus something like 'Fur Elise'... something composed in 1810 and known the world over for well over a century has no room for embellishment (if you don't want things thrown at you). But Zakk worships RR and had his job for over 2 decades so, if anybody has license to do their own thing with Ozzy tunes, I'd say Zakk Wylde is that guy.

I understand both perspectives. Personally, whenever I play cover tunes, I go for playing them the way the originals played them because they don't sound right if I attempt to "originalize" them. Especially Randy. That's just my opinion as an experienced guitarist. If I joined a band and had to play someone else's songs, I'd go for the original version and on new songs written with me, do my own thing there. Just a thought.

I've dumped on Zakk a lot. I basically don't like his sound. I think he forgoes sound quality for showing off. Randy's rendition has a great tone quality and is right for the song. ZAkk's is forced
and without good quality. With that said there is no denying the fact that he can really dominate the neck.

Having listened to the old "Blizzard of Oz & Diary of a mad man" Album's . I think what made Randy Unique sounding,, Was the fact (recording wise), you can Hear "Detail" in his finger accents / hammer ons ... each finger hitting each string ... It sound's so Clear ! It's simply Awesome !!! Zakk tends to get a mushy/blending Sound . ( especially after alot of BEER ) . Ha

I definitely agree that harmonics of all varieties are very cool, (especially when tastefully used...or hell...not so tastefully used for that matter), and I really dig Zakk's soulful approach, and dig BLS. But man, no guitarist beyond intermediate level is going to agree that Zakk's style is harder that Randy's. Especially being that they are nearly identical, but with different rigs, technology, and more squealing on Zakk's part. Zakk will straight up tell you he is trying hard to be Randy.

Play completely different how? He uses the sames scales, the same modes. His feel for the instrument is what's different. The technology he is able to drench his signal in is different from what Randy had at his disposal. In fact, Randy would squeal from time to time as well, though not nearly as often. Simply on the merit that it took more effort to get proper intonation from the strings in Randy's day means a lot to me in this argument of who is a better guitarist.

In my opinion (just my opinion, of course, same as you), I think it wouldn't be possible to compare the two, being that Zakk skips a lot of Randy's notes with pinch harmonics. It's difficult to judge when one guitarist is playing the material of another, and is blatantly skipping parts. Now, I'm a harmonic junkie, so it doesn't bug me too much, but you've got to admit that he can be pretty cheap with them from time to time.

I don't know if you can play pinched harmonics, but if you can you surely must recognize that the amount of "effort" is minimal at best, especially with active pickups. When he pinches he is usually skipping at least two notes that previously resided there. Most obvious example of this would be his live version of Crazy Train. Now, let me reiterate that I love harmonics, but anyone who would suggest that Zakk's version is harder, simply hasn't tried playing both.
