'Metro' is short for 'metropolitan railway' which is an urban railway or a railway which runs wholly within an urban area. In central Birmingham this system doesn't run on the streets. It runs wholly on railway tracks. Therefore it is a metropolitan railway (Metro). It goes onto the streets for the last few stops at the outer end of the route in Wolverhampton. Tracks are due to be laid on the streets in central Birmingham early in 2012.
