The audacity and imagination of what came out of Japan in the 80's and 90's makes me wish for the days of their stronger economy. Perhaps if they can get steam in the engines again we'll see more Bubble Gum Crisis, Cowboy Bebop's, Neon Genesis, Dirty Pairs, Ninja Scrolls, Battle Angels, Akiras, etc. and less safe bets with heavy effects post production effects and so-so artwork.

There's 1 or 2 good feature films every year right now... and that's about it. >_<

Even though this movie was made "before the manga was finished", is why it leaves so many unanswered questions and seems a bit rushed & unfinished. I'm in my 30's and I still believe the Japanese made this movie to shove it in Disney's face as if saying: see if you can create better animation than this. I still don't think anything Disney has put out, can top Akira's animation. Not even Fantasia.

That Naruto and Bleach are the most famous right now does not mean that they are the only ones.

I like Naruto but theres LOTS of Animes that are way better but dont get the attention they deserve.

One Piece is the by far best and most well made TV-show ever created in my opinion but it does not get even close as much attention as Naruto for some strange reason.

Many other wonderful Anime shows available that people should try.

It got really exciting, emotional and touching storys, the most lovable characters ever created, very funny comedy, great action, a very well made fantasy world and so much more.

One Piece got everything a show should have.

Ignore the art style and concentrate on the important stuff if you decide to watch it.

Then you should try "Freedom Project", it is not as deep (only seven episodes) compared to Akira, but there are no other anime series/movies quite like this one. Most anime is a bit weird (in a typical Japanese way) like Final Fantasy, Totoro or Sprited Away it not cartoonish like dragonball, but this is so simple yet so powerful by encapsulating the essence of an ideal and yet it isn't dark like Akira / Death Note, the only closest thing to "FP" is final scene from Gundam Stargazer.

But believe me, the plot behind the Akira movie is "much" deeper than that... It's very deep like the anime Ghost in the Shell; which was an even more complex storyline

Akira + LSD = one hell of a trip.

I f***ing love this movie. The only movie that may be worse than this while tripping is Pink Floyd's The Wall.

And above all else, I love Kaneda's bike. Can't say I blame Tetsuo for wanting that thing. If you can't drop below 5000 RPMs even while changing gears then it's virtually theft proof, in addition to being kick ass.
