i agree with you there on the dangers of tree stand safety and the hunter safety system is great harness but you should also check out the rescue one cds harness it lets you lower yourself to the ground in the event of the fall

This is why I always have my hunter safety system on when im hunting and I use a loggers harness when im hanging stands Im very sorry to hear what happened to Mike more hunters need to become aware of the dangers involved with hunting in tree stands and awareness needs to be raised to prevent stories like this
Guys, give up on these treestands other than the rigid ladder tree seats. Hunting tripods are another good option and Bob Lee Archery is making them but they don't advertise them. Otherwise, odds are sooner or later you WILL fall or have a bad slip.
It takes balls to admit to making a mistake like this - and even more balls to try to make sure that nobody else has to make that same mistake. Listen to this man and wear your safety harness. Simple as that.

I always hunted with a safety harness but one day I went out to move a stand and dropped 18 ft. Had my cell phone and people who knew where I was. Otherwise I would not be here.

I'm not against hunting. I hunt in the uk with guns. It is against the law to hunt with a bow here and for good reason. It's not humane to shoot large animals with a bow.

Hey Mike, I know some of your pain Brother. I fell 30 feet while working. I was lucky, I ended up with a fracture compression to L1. 3 months in bed and I was able to walk again. So close so very close. FALL ARREST SYSTEMS PEOPLE USE THEM. The only thing that makes you a pussy is allowing others to control your actions or emotions. Protect yourself first. Eat what you hunt or don't hunt. Remember it is the natural order of things.
I always carry a home made harness made fromm a long seat belt from a car , I know it sounds shity but they are strong and adjustable by a knot selection that i use on a loop.... Not only has the harness saved me when falling asleep but i made 2 hard shots easier in my day cause i could lean out on the harness to make the shot!!!
I don't kill animals for fun. Last time I checked that's a sign of a psycopath. How is it stupid to wish misfortune to animal rights violators? No one has to convince me to wear a harness. I'm not crazy about heights so I only climb 15 ft. But it doesn't take extreme heights to be dangerous so I never climb without it. It makes me feel secure so I can concentrate on the hunt instead of being nervous.

Quadriplegics don't deserve special dispensations to inflict pain and suffering. If anything they should be more sensitive to the harm and distress they can inflict.
I became a C4 Quadriplegic at the age of 13 and hunting was a great passion of mine. I have chased my dreams despite not being able to move from the neck down, I use a special mouth operated shooting rest. I am the first quadriplegic in the world to successfully hunt African dangerous game, although it got the better of me on my last African Safari in 2003.
What I cannot understand is you said you broke your back C3 and C4. Mate C3 & C4are in your neck NOT your back. If you broke C3 & C4 you wont be moving your arms and hands. If your paralyzed and have 100% movement in your arms and hands then that means you broke your back but C3 & C4 are not in your back. Your lucky you can move your arms and hands mate. If your paralyzed then your a PARAPLEGIC and with the use of both arms and hands NOTHING should stop you from doing anything you want too.

I'm not against hunting. I hunt in the uk with guns. It is against the law to hunt with a bow here and for good reason. It's not humane to shoot large animals with a bow.

Hey Mike, I know some of your pain Brother. I fell 30 feet while working. I was lucky, I ended up with a fracture compression to L1. 3 months in bed and I was able to walk again. So close so very close. FALL ARREST SYSTEMS PEOPLE USE THEM. The only thing that makes you a pussy is allowing others to control your actions or emotions. Protect yourself first. Eat what you hunt or don't hunt. Remember it is the natural order of things.

I always carry a home made harness made fromm a long seat belt from a car , I know it sounds shity but they are strong and adjustable by a knot selection that i use on a loop.... Not only has the harness saved me when falling asleep but i made 2 hard shots easier in my day cause i could lean out on the harness to make the shot!!!

No one has to convince me to wear a harness. I'm not crazy about heights so I only climb 15 ft. But it doesn't take extreme heights to be dangerous so I never climb without it. It makes me feel secure so I can concentrate on the hunt instead of being nervous.

I have chased my dreams despite not being able to move from the neck down, I use a special mouth operated shooting rest. What I cannot understand is you said you broke your back C3 and C4. Mate C3 & C4are in your neck NOT your back. If you broke C3 & C4 you wont be moving your arms and hands. If your paralyzed and have 100% movement in your arms and hands then that means you broke your back but C3 & C4 are not in your back. Your lucky you can move your arms and hands mate. If your paralyzed then your a PARAPLEGIC and with the use of both arms and hands NOTHING should stop you from doing anything you want too.

This is a very sad deal. I really cannot believe he did not wear a safety harness because he had alot of gear to carry to the stand. I am not trying to be rude, but it frustrates me that Mike uses that as his reason for not wearing one. A safety harness is not something you have to carry...just put it on and go...I wear one everytime I hunt from an elevated stand...the peace of mind it gives me and my Family makes it a valuble piece of hunting equiptment.
