  • is there any recommendations on WHERE and what TYPE of fuel pump i can buy?

  • guys i have e36 and i want to replace my fuel pump.. can i follow these steps??? or there is something different ,,,plz help

  • Are there any recommendations on which fuel pump to buy?

I've just had mine go out....

  • @nice12b I bought mine from Pelican Parts.

  • You're the man!

  • @emilio325 Thanks for watching!

  • WOW......Thanks SO MUCH.......I know you saved me at least $650....great instuctions.....started on first try. God Bless

  • @ldawgtn Great to hear! Thanks for the comment!

  • Wanna thank u sooo much dude, u saved me about $650!! God bless u and this very helpful video

  • @jdotruffin Thanks for watching!

  • Your the man bro!! Thanks so much :)

  • @alipategi Thanks for watching!

  • Thanks dude.. you just saved me the labor on my bmw.

  • @alberto10875 Thanks for watching!

  • Another BMW is saved thanks to your awesome video! A big thank you from Poland!

  • @ulvnoir Thanks for watching and for the comment!

  • I really enjoyed your video. I tested my harness and my voltmeter was reading 5V for the sending unit. Is this a sign of a bad relay or fuse?

  • @zanga254 It sounds like the sending unit is okay. If you're getting a reading other than 0 volts it's probably good. Thanks for the comment!

  • Hey man! Somebody mentioned they have lower gas mileage. Was your gas mileage affected after doing this? I don't see how in the world gas mileage could be affected but just wondering.. It's scary to think by doing something this simple, that your gas mileage could be affected UNLESS the pump itself is putting out more fuel than it should be. Can this be controlled?? What are your thoughts? Thanks!

  • @jostube06 Hello! No, my millage was the same. The computer would compensate and regulate the injectors as needed in spite of the pump. I think that guy was seeing the effects of winter fuel. I see a MPG drop every winter because the gas companies have to change the mix for winter.

  • I have to say this video helped me out TREMENDOUSLY. THANK YOU! Quick tip based on my experience - avoid a full gas tank! Gas WILL come out of the pump area if your tank is full...and it WILL be a constant flow until it drains a bit. Be prepared!

  • @john123drury Thanks for the comment and the tip!

  • This is probably the most valuable video for me so far on youtube. You did an excellent job instructing. I replaced my fuel pump with confidence after watching this. My local dealer, Foreign Motors West BMW in Sudbury MA, quoted me $789.93 I bought the pump from a local CarQuest for $175. Took me 30 minutes! THANK YOU!!!!

  • @hmattyj Great to hear you were able to do the job yourself! I really don't know why the $tealer thinks they can charge that much for this job.

  • great DIY

  • @dupastasia Thanks for watching!

  • Problem: So I changed the fuel pump on my 02 330i. Ever since I've changed it, the fuel economy hasn't been as good (range used to be 330 miles now it's about 280 miles) and also the fuel measurement gauge has been inaccurate.

Any ideas what the problem could be?

  • @kreamo225 I know that in the Mid West where I am they change to winter fuel and I loose about 2 MPG. The gauge problem may be a bad sender.

  • Thanks for the great video!!! One question & a suggestion...

Question: When I get the new fuel pump (it's on order) what's the best way to "stopper" the fuel hose? Suggestion: When you remove the electrical connector, you should slide the connector *sleeve* toward the passenger door, not the whole connector. Easy way to do this is insert a screwdriver between the sleeve and main connector body, on the side toward passenger door. It'll slide easily and save you a lot of tugging. Thanks again!

  • @ridg3walker I'm not sure what you mean by "stopper" the fuel hose.

  • @edzgarage How do you keep the fuel from leaking out of the rubber hose when you disconnect it from the fuel pump? Should I be looking for a small stopper to plug up the hose, or did gravity kept the fuel from coming out of the hose?

  • @edzgarage I meant do you need to do anything special to make sure gas doesn't leak from the rubber hose when you disconnect it from the fuel pump? Do I need to stick a little rubber stopper in the hose, or does gravity drain the hose?

  • @ridg3walker It didn't leak very much when I did it. You should be okay.

  • Great Video. Thanks for posting this.

  • @prostovanka Thanks for the comment!

  • You should be telling people to disconnect the battery first man! Also noticed that you had not capped of the disconnected pipe so your petrol was leaking out, just get them to cap that off too. Also it is better to use a blunt tool rather than a screwdriver to hit the lugs as they can snap off! They should also use a new pipe clamp since the old one is sprained.

  • @tradesmanstips Thanks for the comment!

  • Thank you so much. On Christmas Eve my fuel pump failed. You saved my day.

  • @JohnOryan Thanks for the comment! Merry Christmas!

  • I just did this on my 2004 325ci and it works perfectly now! Thank you

  • @Alu152 Great! Thanks for the comment!

  • THANKS THANKS THANKS YOU SAVED ME 1500.00 DOLLARS

  • @ayensdreamer541 That's great! It's amazing how much they get to do this easy job.

  • hello again, another update. Took my car to a garage and turns out the in-fuel tank was failing when warm and causing some (not all) the starting problems. Got a new one in there and so far has been starting with no problems although some pressure is still being lost. Hope this helps anyone else who might be having similar issues.

  • @hotfridge Thanks for the comment!

  • oh is that sweet access from the inside

  • @TheFred1952 I wish all cars were this easy.

  • Very helpful. Thanks! Btw, underneath the rear seat on the DRIVER'S side there are wires running to a very similar looking unit. What is that?

  • @TheAssman42 It's supposed to be another fuel sender on the drivers side. Thanks for the comment!

  • I want to thank you sooooooo much for posting this. I have a 2002 325xi and it was doing the EXACT same thing yours was doing and after calling a ton of shops to price replacing the fuel pump I was quoted over $900 at each place on top of the fact that ALL the shops I called said that they would have to drop the tank and thats why a majority of the labor was going to cost me. As a woman it is discerning to me how these shops get away with scamming people out of thier money.

  • @Badbritches I'm glad you watched this before you got ripped off. I really hate shops that take advantage of people. If you have a few tools you can do this yourself. Thanks for the comment and good luck!

  • Hi, my BMW 330D e46 cranks for a while before starting up and wont start up at all on other occasions. Could this same fuel pump be at fault? I've checked fuses/relays and all ok.

  • @hotfridge Yep, sounds like the pump is going to leave you stranded real soon.

  • @edzgarage Quick update, checked the in-tank fuel pump (thanks to this video!) and it's running ok so looks like problem lies elsewhere for me.

  • @hotfridge Thanks for the update! Good luck getting it fixed. My pump started acting up at least month before it stopped working.

  • Thanks for your video bro. It helped me a lot . I had the same problem but did not have clue what was wrong with my 2005 330ci until I watched your video. I did exact same like your video and car start right up. But the pump was $350 plus tax at the bmw dealers. Thanks again.

  • @TONYKAZLA Thanks for the comment!

  • Pelican has these pumps pretty cheap.

  • They say you shouldn't use power tools when doing this job.....

  • @Drewb187 Thanks.

  • thanx for your help, i want to order a fuel pump. where did u order yours?

  • @eam3618 Sorry, I don't remember. I did a lot of searching before I found it though.

  • one more question, im testing the power wires to the pump and theres 2 sets, a thin pair, and a thicker pair, thin pair always have power, thick pair only get power for about 3 seconds after i turn the key, then it cuts off, i dont hear the pump making any noise at all, witch are the correct wires? u mentioned one set being the sending unit, ur help will greatly be appreciated

  • @eam3618 The wires that always have power are the fuel sending unit. The wires with power for 3 seconds are the power wires to the pump. If the pump is not making noise it's probably bad. Sometimes you can hit the big ring or next to it with a rubber mallet and the pump may start working, but it will stop again in time.

  • where did u buy ur pump for $149???

  • Im trying to fix my car, I found one on ebay its a Fuel Pump Complete Assembly with sending unit, will it work, or will i have problems with it?

  • @eam3618 I don't know.

  • your video helped me alot but the problem is i bought the fake fuel pump not genuine one the fake one..its pressure is to0 and the car start after 7 to 8 selvies please help me what do i do? give me a solution except for buying another one?

  • @shery3331 Sounds like you need to buy a new pump.

  • @shery3331 where did u buy it ebay? let me know so i wont buy mine there

  • My 2004 325I died while driving (literally stopped) and the problem has been diagnosed as the fuel pump which is located "in the tank". It is a "low emissions vehicle". I've been told that the part is not currently available in the US (wow! I'm the first??) and must be ordered from Germany. Cost = $6000 + labor to install. Help! This looks pretty routine for someone that knows what they're doing. What do I do? junkyard? sell it? anyone have a spare fuel tank?? thanks!

  • @dbwoessner You must be kidding. I can't believe the pump is not available for a 7 year old car. Look on line for yourself and see if you can buy the pump. This video should help you put it in. Good Luck!

  • @edzgarage I'm at their mercy -- usually count on the mechanic to know all... What do I look for? Surely, there is a wrecked car out there. From your video, it doens't look like they have to replace the tank... Is there a part number? thanks again!

  • Just done this my self. Brilliant video really helped i could not have done the job without it. The part cost me £20 so to call this a bargain job sums it up nicely. I`m sure it would have cost me a few hundreds if i took it anywhere. THANK YOU.

I fitted a M3 fuel pump into a 320ci just in case someone wants to know if this would work. So far its working fine.

Once again thank you for posting this video. Keep up the good work

  • @B3NGALImafia Glad to all went well for you. Thanks for the comment!

  • I just did this repair job and it was pretty easy for a person used to working on cars. I have a 2001 BMW 325ci (e46). Just a note that when I installed the new pump, I changed the procedure a bit. I put the new seal on the pump and lowered it into the tank, but before trying to seat the pump, I worked the seal around the tank plastic opening before pushing the pump into place. This was the easiest way to do the install.

  • @grapedog100 Great job! Thanks for the comment!

  • nice work you did

  • @kanewatman1 Thank you!

  • Have a question, maybe you can help... I appreciate your time in advance! We replaced fuel pump and since we did, the fuel gauge isn't accurate - when tank is full guage is reading 1/2 tank...? Any suggestions? Thank you!

  • @PakaFD Hello, it sounds like the sender is not free to move all way up. You may have to take the pump back out and see what it is stopping the arm from moving.

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! You saved us hundreds!!! Dealer called with quote of $840 - thanks to your video, I realized they we're quoting 5 hours labor for a 30 minute job. Thanks for the step by step, we(non-mechanics) were able to replace in about 30-40 minutes for part cost only, of $275! Can't say Thank You enough!

  • @PakaFD Thanks for the comment! The Stealer loves to overcharge on easy jobs.

  • DUDE you are a hero. i saved myself the money from the mechanic and took me 30 min to replace, appreciate it

  • @hekr44 Thanks for the comment!

  • What would cause an E36 fuel pump to make a loud gurgling sound on startup that gradually wanes over a few seconds? The noise is louder when the ambient temperature is high. No symptoms of pump failure - the car revs freely to redline, and starts easily both warm and cold.

  • @sbakar I'm no expert by no means, but it does sound like the pump is getting ready to fail. Usually they just stop working with no warning.

  • @edzgarage That was my impression as well, but it has been doing this on and off for several years now!

  • hehe good job

  • @vietcong4u Thanks!

  • GREAT VIDEO!!! I had the same problem, my car would not start for 3 days. I changed the fuel pump and it solved the problem! : ) Now, my car starts up fine with no problems!!! THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU FOR MAKING THIS STEP BY STEP VIDEO!!!!!

  • @mlpdade Thanks for the comment!

  • I just ordered the fuel pump, it will get here tomorrow, Tuesday, and I will replace it the same day. Hopefully that is the problem, if not I will check the fuse and relay. Damn pump came out to be 210.

  • I have a 325I 1991, I turn on my car switch to on and the fuel pump doesn't make any sound or movement, does that mean it needs a new one? My car won't start, it does the same thing like in this video.

  • @eriklocs If you have power at the fuel pump for a few seconds after you turn the switch ON then your pump is bad. If you don't have power there check the fuse and relay.

  • I have a 2004 325i. I'm not getting the 12volts to the fuel pump. I am getting the 12volts to the relay. I jumped out the contacts on the relay and still no voltage to the pump. Does anyone know if there is any other interlocks in the circuit from the relay to the pump?

  • @gismo1911a You will only get 12 volts to the pump for a few seconds if the engine is not running.

  • 10/4. I was on the wrong contacts. Even though I faintly hear the pump running, I pulled the fuel filter and nothing is actually pumping. I assume it's time to change my pump.

  • Did you drain the gas tank before this. Also, how did you take the fuel line out because it's giving me a lot of trouble?

  • @sadaf25 Hi! No, I did not drain the tank. For the fuel line clamp, you will need to bend the little fingers up and the squeeze the clip while prying the end up.

  • oh great, the video stops at 35s and refuses to play any further. youtube is broken yet again as it does let me download and watch it! to get that done in the UK you are looking at nearly £1000.

  • @urbex2007 Keep trying, It should play fine.

  • The wire that isn't connected to anything is a battery shunt wire, used during shipping.

  • @silvermediastudio Thanks for the comment!

  • Well, I found the problem, that compromised fuel pump, reverse lights, wipers, reverse alarm, was funny, the guilty ones was ants in one relay, small ants make a house into the relay and make the whole problem. That happens in the engine compartment, close to the battery, funny ah?

    Thanks any way my friend!!

  • @mandragoramaldita That's pretty weird to say the least. Good that you found the problem.

  • by the way thanks for the information about youtube.!!

  • @mandragoramaldita Thanks for watching!

  • I have a question, i have a suv landwind, today that car don't start, I check battery, fuel, and i think is the fuel pump, is a intake fuel pump, fine, the car have a reverse sensor, and a beep coming up when you put reverse, but instead the beep, the rear wiper start, any idea about that problem?

I check all the fuses and they are OK.

    Thanks

  • @mandragoramaldita It sounds like you have shorted circuit some where. Sorry I can be of any more help to you.

  • Very good, very ilustrative, thanks!!

  • @mandragoramaldita Thanks for the comment!

  • I have a 2001 325ci .. where is the fuel pump located?

  • @gerardoac1 Not sure, did you look under the rear seat?

  • The other end of the mystery wire is in the trunk near the battery. I've heard it is used when the car is shipped from the factory. There is a relay that is attached to the battery and the switch is inside the car. The relay makes it easy to disconnect/reconnect the battery. The relay and switch are then removed at the port and reused.

  • @pcazzola2010 Thanks! Makes sense to me.

  • wow thanks a million! this helped a ton! great job with the video!

  • @CanFirearmsReview I'm glad it helped! Thanks for the comment!

  • @edzgarage dont worry this is not hard at all make sure the seal goes under and not on top of the ring im 14 and changed it and the fuel filter not that hard =D

  • @edzgarage that wire that isn't connected to anything is for the rear heated seats option i gather you don't have them

  • @Operator21 Thanks for the comment! The wire seem to be too small gauge for heated seats.

  • @edzgarage Thanx man u just saved me 350 $ towing and labor charges :)))

  • Thank you sooo much! super helpful! and yes that PB blaster stuff is amazing! thanks again!

  • @SuleyErsahin Great! Thanks for the comment!

  • thanks this video was helpful. i got a question. i have a 318is 1993. its been sitting for a few months now it starts but won't stay on if you have any idea what to do please let me know.

  • @amurahbabii Thanks! Your problem could be some many things. Your gas may be bad or the fuel filter is plugged or the fuel system may need to be cleaned just to name a few.

  • Thanks for a great video. Really helped.

  • @vidospace Thanks for the comment!

  • I have a 87 325 E30 do and I recently had a gas leak and Im buying a new tank.. Do I put it in the same way? something about removing the back seat?

  • @RansomLive I don't know, maybe some else out here can help.

  • u think the fuel pump for my bmw is at the same spot.??? 318i 98

  • @167973j I don't know for sure. Pop the rear seat out and take a look.

  • Good stuff! Definitely saving this in my favorites for when (hopefully not!) this happens!

  • @devenking Thanks for watching!

  • I think i have the same issue. I started it up and i put it into drive. RPM dropped, and it stalled. I started it back up, and it stalled after 30 sec. Everytime after that, it would start up and die immediately. Returned the next day, and it started up just fine, and drove it home. I checked the voltage at battery and normal. I checked the voltage at the fuel pump and it reads 11V. I see yours reads about the same, but you said you had left yours sitting for a while. relay issue?

  • @AnandP83 I bet your pump is bad. Mine would work fine one day then it leave me hagging the next. It would work for a week without issues, then it completely quit in the garage (luckily). The 11v reading I think is actually the fuel level indicator (I put a comment on the vid about that). The other two wires are the pump power wires, check them for power as you turn the key ON. The power will be there for a short amount on time so look quickly.

  • Thanks!!!!

  • @theoneic8 Thanks for watching!

  • Thanks for the awesome video. Amazing well shot. Looks like I might be attempting this today...

  • @jagoodie007 Thanks for the comment and good luck on your project!

  • I will be doing my fuel pump today. I was having the same troubles - car would crank but not start ('02 330ci). Moment of truth is tonight!

  • @dhulla Good luck Buddy.

  • @edzgarage did you reuse the hose clamp? If not, what type did you buy? It is a pain to get it back on and I am stuck there!

  • @dhulla Yes, I was able to reuse the hose clamp.

  • A good practice is to replace the fuel filter also when replacing the pump. This can remove any bad debris the bad fuel pump was shitting into the filter. The filter is an easy DIY, just a pain in the ass to get the hoses and clamps off.

  • @dhulla Thanks for the comment! You are correct, I replaced the fuel filter a few months earlier and it was a pain to get the hoses and clamps off.

  • good deal. same thing happened to me on my 330i and its the same set up its a 2004. appreciate it i even put this on my facebook.

  • @Robgotlosttx Thanks for the comment!

  • thanks a lot ...any info on fuses or relays to check before cheking the pump??

  • @alicatetu Thanks for the comment! I can't remember what the fuel pump fuse is, but I think it's 54. I don't really know where the relay is.

  • @alicatetu Thanks for the comment! I can't remember what the fuel pump fuse is, but I think it's 54. I don't really know where the relay is.

  • Thanks for the informative video. The little piece of wiring that doesn't connect to anything is for a quick battery kill switch. The switch would be installed in the factory, and is there to disconnect the battery while a car sits inside the ship/train/transporter, traveling to the buyer's country. Once the car arrives at the port, it's used again to connect the battery. When the car gets to the dealership, a technician removes the switch, leaving the wire for you to find.

  • @oodlespring Thanks for the info on the unattached wires.

  • where did you get the pump, i went to a local car parts that has helped me in the past but the pump was 250$, where did you get it?

  • @903649joe I bought it here autohausaz

  • That was actually a good nd detailed video :) i have an practical assessment on fuel pumps tomoz, thanks for the help :)

  • @7593ryan Thanks for the comment!

  • As a guy thats done alot of electric pumps running them dry like he does on the new pump is a no no that can burn it up pretty darn fast them you just waste a good pump there tested before you buy them and he already tested the line so there was no need for that

  • @my81camaro Thanks for the info. I did it not to see if the pump works, but to see if the circuit works.

  • thankyou, youve saved me alot of time and trouble.

  • @treborif Thanks for the comment!

  • BWHAHAHAHAHA "well, let's see if that' the problem." -pump jumps with the torque of the motor- "Well that's pretty conclusive!!"

  • @TheMilitarynut And your point? It was conclusive...

  • @edzgarage I'm just joking with ya. It's funny that the thing leaps off the back seat. great video.

  • @TheMilitarynut Okay, sorry for questioning you. Thanks for the comment buddy!

  • Nice work Ed, good video!^^

  • @carnivore10 Thanks!

  • Nice fix job. I really like the way you do not have to pull the gas tank out! Germans are great engineers. Thumbs up!

  • @Hallaran It is a great design, I was very happy!

  • Great video Ed. I'm definitely saving this for when my fuel pump goes.
