That type of nail gun is spring loaded, and the nails discharge if pressure is pressed against the nozzle, ie, push the gun against a board, and the nails shoot out. the pressure of her head landing against the gun discharged it. Since the skull is round, some of the nails skittered against the inner surface of her head before penetrating, causing them to ricochet in different directions.

Also, she's moving her head slightly, varying the trajectory. Nail guns are sensitive and dangerous; and if you google it, you'll see that they can be tragic murder weapon.
