  • 6:04 OMG!

  • The video title is incorrect. It's no. 2 in C minor, op. 18, not no. 1.

Rachmaninoff piano concerto no. 1 (F-sharp minor, op. 1) is not a well known piece, most people don't know about it but it's so beautiful, truly a little gem. I love Rach-1 so much more than Rach-2. Oh, btw, I played it in 2009. please see my channel.

I also played Rach-2 1st mov. when I was in high school - here is a link for you.

How old was Erika-san when she played Rach-2 ?

  • What a rush! Sergeii Rachmaninoff would be proud of you. Please don't stop performing.

  • heh is it just me or does this sound EXACTLY like Ashkenazy's performance/interpretation?

  • @WTBbboyNAME

that's what I thought first, too, but Ashkenazy plays it "softer" and more accurately (speaking of the LSO/Previn version) if this isn't a fake (looks as if people watched the perfomance in a cinema), compliments! better than Lang Lang!

  • @shige292

I did play the chords together - see my channel or my video response above.

  • i didn't look at her face the whole time, because i like to think that she's me in the future, and someone taped it and went back in time to post it...

  • I'm a violinist, but where are the cellos? Just sayin...

Respect!

  • she does really take my breath away... her playing give this piece of music to another level and imagination... different yet beautiful and amazing than Rachmaninoff... really great job I LOVE IT^^... now when going to sleep.. this concerto will be ringing in my ears, memories the whole night :D... specially her Piano.. Yay!! and oh! thanks for the upploading

  • @ruper29 Erika's interpretation of this concert is, in my opinion, better than all the other musicians I know have taken that. The only one, but with a different way of interpretation, reaches the same level is always in my modest opinion, Arcadi Volodos. "

  • det var en gång en snorpelle.... Nice!

  • Very impressed...

    THANKS.

  • this young lady has already 400.000 people looking at her video. This is very much for classical music, even pavarotti did not make it much more on youtube.....

  • Fantastic. Her expression is amazing, the tempo is at the right pace. I believe this is probably the best verson of this song. Rachminoff is an incredible player.

  • @scookie14 Sergei Rachmaninoff ( 1873 - 1943 ) is the composer.

Erika Hanada is the pianist here but there are old versions played by Rachmaninoff himself in youtube as well.

  • Andrea, you misunderstood my comment - I meant that Lisitsa, not Erika. played it way too fast - Erika's tempo is PERFECT. This is a dream-like performance that wonderfully balances surging passion with lyrical intimacy. She displays the same qualities in the magnificent Scriabin Fantasy Op. 28, one of Scriabin's best pieces. I hope Erika can sustain a major career - she clearly deserves to.

  • @mvolkov11

I agree with your opinion. Her tempo is perfect.

  • It's wonderful to see a woman playing this concert, and it's not way too fast as mentioned by the other coment.

    Rachmaninov otself played this way.

    Bravo Bravo Bravo!!!!!!

  • Bravo,Erika! Wonderful sound and technic!!!!!

  • Is she playing not too fast ahead of the orchestra?

  • Mints, Lisitsa does have a marvelous flow over the keyboard, but she plays this movement way too fast, not luxuriating in the beautiful details while keeping the

large-scale structure intact, which this girl does. Lisitsa does not feel the passionate surging emotional power of this piece, nor any other piece

I've heard her play. It's always the same story - no nuance, just a breakneck tempo. Even unsophisticated audiences can sense this, and she will never sustain a significant career.

  • it must have been hard for Erika to get in-sync with the orchestra! they don't play well

  • Sorry, but that orchstra was playing awfully. Poor Erika!

  • I watch this video every single day at least once a day. I can't get over how much it moves me...even now. Thank you so much for posting this.

  • It's so amazing !

  • tears fullfill my face

  • Technique is nearly flawless. I didn't read her name but I hope she matures into a star and that we can look forward to her future recordings and concerts. Interpretation was very good but, i think she held back somewhat for the sake of technique as many young performers do. Exciting, nonetheless...

  • She ROCKs.. Like a young Argerich; you expect a femine interpretation and she blows you away. She will be heard from.

  • Very clean articulation and a somewhat methodical approach. She and the orchestra took their time, but alas the passion in interpretation has eluded the young pianist.

  • @PPQ12F567 And who are you exactly? This was awesome.

  • @mintsauce82 Look and listen to Valentina Lisitsa playing Rachmaninoff Piano Concert 2. You will hear better pace and tempo and an all around more authoritative and commanding perfornance. Notice how Valentina's hands flow over the keyboard. By the way, the piano Valentina is playing is a Bosendorfer 97 keys 12 feet Imperial Grand.

  • she is so beautiful...

  • This should be titled "ROCK" Maninoff!

  • ???????? are you crazy ??

  • Alexis Weissenberg has a better version, in my opinion

  • AMAZING. I think she needs more strength to play this even better, though

  • Best version ever..

  • this is beyond wonderful. No words.

  • Wonderfully played.. How a trust Rakhmaniov should be played fantastic :P The orchestra is perfect too in perfect sync with the piano... Just fantastic

  • holy crap she is amazing

  • @himapan lol!

  • My compliments to Erika; She has stolen my heart !

I hope we'll be hearing much of her in the future !

  • Oh wow..

  • It is beautiful and it it is solemn !

  • Wow, She's very young !

  • She is Japanese. Could Russian play marvelously like this?

  • I don't know but seem like russian compose the score

  • THis is one of the few interpretations on youtube that I love!

    Beautiful

  • Una esecuzione perfetta e una interpretazione stupenda!

  • How old are she ?

  • At least she can play the piano not everyone else can play it

  • Very good keyboard artistry, But a little too tame for me to enjoy it fully. Though moderato, I think could have some more presence and gusto.

  • the song is also very good

when she plays it SHE'S SEXY

  • you are scum Jgutierrez

  • She is fucking fabulous. Are you people OUT OF YOUR MINDS???? look at her arms. From the first note she had every note under her control. I graduated (Masters) from MSM and this girl represents why I quit playing! She is EVERYTHING and I don't even know her name. Mine is Deborah Arnott. I'd love to meet her.

  • This is one of my very favorite interpretations of this piece. Stunning. I have watched this video at least a few dozen times and I still feel moved every single time.

  • Nice!

  • Elegantly played, thoroughly enjoyed it!

Altho it seems a bit too soft for my taste.

Listen to Rachmaninov play the Rach 2

and you'll see what I mean.

  • It is beautiful!

  • are you saved

  • very beautifull playing.. really well done... wonderfull sound!

  • This is one of my favourite concertos! It's played well here.

The pieces from Nodame have become really popular! ...not that they weren't before

Some people don't have a choice on whether or not they can break chords! I can't play a clean 10th...need like half a cm more :(

  • Is this version different from the normal concerto? I listened to some other versions and they didn't seem the same. Is this a special composition for the Nodame Cantabile?] series or something?

  • tell me about it :( not to mention that Rach 3 is destined remain on the "dream list"

  • Comment removed

  • Starting at 7:00, I get all giggly like a school girl and just melt at the same time.

This is my most favorite piano piece of all time. I LOVE Rachmaninov.

  • And the beginning chords are just... how do you describe that? Do I use the cliche of "epic", or is there some better adjective that fails me?

  • "Epic" is overused these days, but it is definitely apt in this case.

  • @ShereKhanTiger hyperepic

  • @ShereKhanTiger

I think Nodame Cantabile described them as "blinding"

  • I completely agree with you it's my favorite piano piece and the 7:00 part is EPIC.

  • almost everyone who playes this breaks the chords! There is nothing wrong with that. I break the chords myself... (some of them)

  • yeah but breaking the chords just doesn't have the same effect. i tried it when i played this piece and preferred not breaking them...

  • This was an excellent performance.

Lots of comments here on breaking chords. Can you or someone tell me what exactly this is? Breaking chords as in arpeggiating the last note that you can't reach, right? Not breaking a legato transition into staccato, right?

Can you point out for me where she does this here?

  • Comment removed

  • who cares just look at the girl she's hot

  • This song is very very good!!

  • wonderfull!! :)

  • Many people break this chords. For example: Helene Grimaud

    Ann :)

  • wow! (I..I)

  • Rachmaninov had banana hands. This pianist doesn't. Therefore, no. She can't reach them.

  • 3.40 in myy heart forever... thanks.

  • Rakhmaninov has such amazing pieces <3

btw, the pianist wiping and cleaning the keyboard just goes to show how prepared she is for anything, which is good :D

  • 7:02 :P

  • Amazing :o

  • 5:10 i've never seen a pianist clean the piano during a tacet haha.

She plays excellent and well deserves the silver medal.

One of my favourite parts of music, is competition.

  • The sound mixing >>> she is way to soft when the orchestra is at hand

  • the hissing sound from the mic is annoying. or is that part of the orchestra?

  • that section felt a bit laggy to me...she seems to want to go a bit faster but had to contain herself. maybe i am just used to hearing other interpretations play it a bit faster

  • Russian Orchestra`s performance is.. better.

  • yeah we know that already -.-

  • beautiful.

  • I think this is not according to the piece. But i think it's good. I don't know your interpretation of the piece.

  • This recording is hit and miss for me. Don't like the opening chords, let down by the climax theme, but really liked some of the soft parts.

  • strength is leaving her arms even before she hits the keyboard, I feel like there is no firmness in her hands, and the excessive wrist motion and hand lifting at the beginning of the movement - which is so trendy right now among new-coming pianists - completely takes the immediacy and force out of the sound. I'd say stay away from Rachmaninoff until you're really ready. The pretty princess dress won't help you much either.

  • only hear part of it's voice. In Rachmaninoff's standards, and in the standards of all great pianists, this performance rates good, or great at the most.

  • excessive hand motion was considered etiquette in the time period of the music. Look at the fingerings written by the original composers, it reflects it. Your focus is mostly on appearance, but its not about looks, its about quality of the music. That's why most music competitions now-a-days are screened. Piano is one of the few exceptions.

  • If you read my comments more carefully, you will see that I am speaking about how the the physical posture and motion affects the sound. I was observing how the excessive lifting of the hand and the swinging motion takes out the spontaneous force and immediacy out of the music that I would like to hear especially in Rachmaninoff. Her technique may be more fitting for Chopin etc...but if etiquette gets in the way of music then I see a problem there.

  • Her performance was breath taking and for those who found her wiping her hands and the keys distracting I think you are easily distracted. I found the action in no way detracted from her performace and barely noticed.
