  • what does aba mean in ghanaian?

  • The song and the original artist is Igbo, Nigeria. The confusion is that The song is interwoven with pidgin and igbo. pidgin is a hybrid of many west african languages. However the song is mainly in IGBO, so i don't know what the argument is about. The dance to this song is called egwu uku (the butt dance). when you translate the song, especially the end...it is rather dirty ;)

  • What does the last part of this song means...the part that was edited in the remix?

  • Its nigerian original rex lawson 1960

  • What ever the meaning of the song.I love the arrangement of the song and its pretty entertaining. We leave the argument over the origin of the lyric to Nigerians,Ghanian and whoever speak Yorubo.

  • PLS DIRECTOR RESHOOT THIS SCENE

  • m from Kenya and I really love his song.....this guyz should come to kenya very soon ...i think Kenyan girls gonna scream

  • @nwababy1 yeah he should come...I heard the Ugandan girls went nuts. This Naija guy is smooth.

  • @MyJackyjacky .Surely, was he already there or he is just visiting?

  • Delphine et moi, on aime trop ça!!!

  • ...if u ask me, i think the girl in the short green dress is called "Ashawo". i could also make a song about her

  • This version sounds much better sef (than the other remix). But I still can't let go of the fact that he seems to be gloroifying prostitution, somebody correct me if I am wrong o. Lawson's heritage was something else. Pity.

  • @BrotherChimaobi Actually the original was NOT glorifying prostitution, rather it was chastising young girls who think of it as way of making quick money away from home. They maybe way from home, but they can still be caught out by someone who knows their family, who can then report them......in other words...represent your family well, even while away from home!

    PEACE!!

  • Rex Lawson in his grave is jamming to this joint.

  • waka waka baby <3

  • IGBO KWENU!!!

  • @mrcritic1 Yah!!!

  • Ashawo is purely yoruba word there is no such word like Ashawo in Igbo. if u are igbo try and prounce the word and see if u can figure its meaning by saying it. it just yoruba slang or way of calling harlot we Igbo call harlot "akwunakwuna" thats the igbo word

  • Stop quarelling amongst yourselves. Appreciate but the good artistic work he's put in Place.Be it igbo yuroba or housa, just enjoy the lyrics

  • I heard thus song on the radio but never knew it was by him...

  • @chocolategorgeous the ibo word for prostitute is ogacha which is actually informal. the formal word for prostitute or harlot is akwunakwuna. Ashawo is just a made up slang from I guess yoruba. fyi am igbo.

  • @ken942

you are right! prostitute in igbo is akwu-na-kwuna (oga-cha). Ashawo is morea slang borrowed from yoruba and is officially used in various places including Ghana!

  • isint dis guy an actor aswel? or m i jst mistaken?

  • @UcheUwadi An Igbo man who grew up in Lagos. If Ashawo is truly an Igbo word, I want you to break it down into its component part and tell me if it means anything in Igbo.

  • @chocolategorgeous or it could just be his accent.

  • @chocolategorgeous ashawo means in ghana prostitie xd

  • 2.The Peacocks sang in Igbo as well as Efik, and if I'm not mistaken in Twi.Bobby Benson sang in Yoruba and Twi. Eddie Okonta sang a song called 'Essi Nana'.

Music was the universal medium they used in those days,so naturally certain words became common in BOTH countries.(I even have Saro friends who also use the word Ashawo!)They saw themselves as brothers, one flesh, there wasn't any of the hostilities between the two,as is common today....we can ALL learn from this!

    PEACE!

  • @vixxy02 You're so right. Cardinal Rex Lawson of mixed Igbo and Kalabari origin in his original version titled 'Sawale', alluded to the Yoruba Ashewo. In freetown among the krios (mostly Yorubas in origin), the word ashewo is used to describe loose women (lived in freetown for 2 years). Love this music, love our cross-cultural open-mindedness, love the hip-hop generation. VIVA NIGERIA.

  • @planetolusola Peace and love aburo-mi!

  • 1.I've read a lot of the comments, arguing about the origins of the word 'Ashewo/Ashawo' and actually the word is a Yoruba word. How did it come to be a common word in Ghana?simple. During the colonial days, there was much movement between Ghana,Nigeria, and Sierra Leon, because though they were separate countries, they were ALL part of the British Empire. When Highlife music was developed in Ghana,a lot of the bands had both Nigerian and Ghanaian members, and both sang in each others languages.

  • Who sing the original version to this song? I dig this record!!!

  • @90210g2 The late Great Sir Rex Jim Lawson!

  • Director pls reshoot the scene,so funny. but service strong for dat place o

  • This song is a remix of Cardinal Rex Lawson's 60's hit titled 'Sawale'. Follow the link below for the original

See my video response for the original version.

Of course, Ashawo or Asewo in Yoruba meaning 'prostitute'. The syntax of the word itself when broken down means 'Ase Owo', or 'Money changer'.

When you patronize and Ashewo (prostitute) and you tender a large bill for service provided, an Ashewo always will give you your change back, hence the term 'Ashewo'

  • @planetolusola Thank you, but how did you know that he was talking about the Yoruba meaning Ashewo not something else?

  • @alaji2 Because the song in this video is a remake of Cardinal Rex Lawson classic from the 60's titled 'sawale'. (see my youtube post titled: Cardinal Rex Lawson - Sawale (Audio)). Asewo is a Yoruba word by meaning and sytnax. When you break the word down into its component parts, it means ase+owo, a Yoruba derivative name for prostitutes. The word, though Yoruba in origin, is widely used in Nigeria for loose women aka prostitutes.

  • @planetolusola here, every non-english word used is 100% igbo, there4 de singer said "ashawo" (which is an igbo word) and not "asewo" (which is yoruba).

  • @chocolategorgeous 'ashawo' is now a street lingo popular all over west africa. But the origin of the word is the Yoruba interpretation, Asewo. Go ask your parents.

  • @planetolusola ashawo is an Igbo word!!!!

obviously, u hv ur asewo, which is yoruba. 2ndly, u cant seriously claim 2 understand my language more than i do! its laughable. stick wit ur "asewo"; and i'll stick wit my "ashawo". finally, becuz urs ("asewo") is made up of 2 worded-letters 2 form de noun doesnt mean that its de same in ours. in Igbo lang, "ashawo" is just a word for a prostitute, just as "iko" translates "cup" without any other extended or borrowed meaning to sum it up.

  • @chocolategorgeous

Some Ghanaians also say Ashawo, I believe some Siera Leonians say that too. The math is simple here, "ashawo" is either Ghana, Igbo, or Saro which leaves out Yoruba with just 'ashewo.'

  • @skiruptblk - u guys are to funny. Just google it. ASHAWO is a derivative of the Yoruba word - ASHEWO. One I've known for at least 28 yrs. Every other version u hear regardless of where in the world you hear it is a derivative of the original Yoruba word. Its even used in Bahia El-Salvador in Brasil where a lot of Yoruba heritage and norms are still maintained.

  • @skiruptblk even togolese ppl say ashawo

  • @planetolusola "ashawo" means prostitute in Igbo; no if, no but! its as straight forward as that!

  • @chocolategorgeous I'm not denying that. What I'm telling you is Ashawo is borrowed from the yoruba word 'Asewo'. Lagos yoruba, pidgin english and lagos igbo is now so interwoven, but the origin of the word is unmistakably Yoruba. Even the ghananians who also have the word 'Ashewo' in their lingo attribute the origin to the yoruba interpretation. I'm sure we are all proud of our heritage, but the meaning of a word should not be lost because of the ignorance of a hip-hop generation.

  • @planetolusola You're so right. Ewes in Ghana, Togo and Benin lived in KETU in Nigeria (and may have spoken Yoruba) before moving on to their present so-called countries. Gas in Accra, Ghana and Aneho in Togo also lived in Ile Ife in Nigeria. Grosso modo, most of our 'new' languages are not more than 3,000 years old. To know more about our history, I'll recommend, not specifically to you, to read 'THE DESTRUCTION OF BLACK CIVILIZATION' by Chancellor Williams.

  • @Duboismalcolm : You are so right for the history. Many languages are entwined in West african languages especially yoruba language in some ghanian dialects ..e.g.. Akuko=Hen/cock, Ekuabo(Akuaba)= Welcome, Ashewo(Ashawo)= Prostitute, Ogogoro/apeteshi =local gin. et.c. Recently watching some IvoryCoast musical videosI heard many yoruba words. Tthanks for the recommendation of the book, I'm buying it.

  • @omoibile Cheers. Sorry it took this long to react to your msg but I'd been offline for a while. Peace to you & your family.

  • @planetolusola what does ashawo or Asewo mean?

  • @believer2010ful Ashawo or Ashewo is a word used to describe women of loose morals, prostitutes, women who sell their body for money, bitches!!. The word itself is Yoruba in origin, but is common throughout West-Africa. Search on youtube for 'Ashawo', 'Sawale', 'Ashewo' for 60's highlife songs about the subject.

  • @believer2010ful it means prostitute or slut.

  • @planetolusola

You dey talk true..........just look at the word it looks like an Yoruba word.

  • @chocolategorgeous Asewo(pronounced A-SHA-WO) is purely a YORUBA WORD! It means "money changer"...Money changer in the sense of..."Money 4 hand, back 4 ground!"...or Prostitute! The late Cardinal Rex Jim Lawson sung the song in pidgin with a few YORUBA words but NOT IGBO. This is a fine tribute by these guys who are Igbo,so it's cool that they give it an Igbo twist, but ASEWO is not an Igbo word,it's Yoruba!

    PEACE!

  • listen ashowa is orignally a nigerian word i'm ghanaian and i know this because the language ga in accra is nigerian language but only some words are changed and ga say ashowo in theri language which happens to be a nigeraiain woord

  • am Ghanaian n an Ashanti av heard ashawo all my life n i know it a Ga word for a prostituten in twi is odwamanboni n even the twi people who lived in accra like my self n other places tend to used that word a lot cos thats wer most Ga ppl live but i dont know abt other country....this is kinda of interesting Gh n Niaja always have somtin to ague lol if they wer to be europeans i think Naija will be germany n Gh will be GB like during the war shyt lmao

  • @lilrex101

Based on your argument, that is a Nigerian word then, you do know that Gas migrated from Nigeria (Yoruba) right? Just like we think we started Jollof rice but it's actually from the Wollof people, meaning "one pot". I know my 9ja friends are going to argue but it's true.

Anyway, who cares about the origin of the word, let's just enjoy the music!

  • SORRY HUN, BUT GHANAIANS ARE NOT TRYING TO CLAIM THIS!!! LOL ALL TEH SAME IS FUNNY

  • ahohol hehehee love this song<3

  • Ashewo is a yoruba word for prostitute Igbo call it Agaracha and Ghana call it Ashawo too. remember there are many yoruba words all over West Africa. "Baby Sawale" means Baby come home in Yoruba language. This particular song is spoken in many languages even Ghana words are there too with Ivorian words too. The words in the song are Yoruba, Igbo, Ashanti, Ivorian coastal language and Pidgin english. The original singer is Late Cardinal Rex Lawson from Rivers state (IJAW) of Nigeria

  • @omoibile i wil like to correct you, yes asewo is yoruba for prostitute. akwuna-akwuna is Igbo or prositute. Agaracha is igbo for "a walka about" or "wonderer". the word ashawo is came from Igbo's bad atempt @ sayin the yoruba word asewo.

  • @cp2dec: Agreed it's pronounced Ashawo so also do IvoryCoast and Ghana except for Benin Republic that still maintain the real name ASHEWO

  • i like it

    cool!!!

  • i like it

  • @mayo na you be the fool. you dont even know the real meaning of Ashawo. Ashawo is equal to all woman that ever sleep with different man

  • why the heck are we people arguing over whether ashawo is ghanian or not, the artist used igbo in the whole song, so the ashawo part is not that significant.

  • @chisom26 : Ghana borrowed the word Ashawo from yoruba it means prostitute. THE REAL GHANA WORD FOR ASHAWO IS JANTRUEIN (spelling wrong) or TUWE CHANS BESIA..lol.. Not withstanding. They speak Hausa too in the song towards the end it wasn't all igbo language, Sawale Ashawo means Come back home whore. (waka waka baby) THE SIGNIFICANT WORD IS ASHAWO a message to the girls out there who like waka about (walk about)

  • dauda

  • who cares where he is from, just enjoy the clip !

  • Ashawo are everywhere even in my country we call them so....no need to fight over where dat word comes from...

  • THIS GUY IS FROM RIVERS STATE, NIGERIA, FROM THE KALABARI TRIBE, NOT GHANA. THIS IS A REMIX OF THE SONG THAT CARDINAL REX LAWSON SANG BACK IN THE 60's.

  • @daveibukun

Flavor is from Enugu state, not rivers and he's igbo, not kalabari. Where did you read that from?

  • Comment removed
