People who think this is fake need to watch the punch in HD and watch the perfect punch land and makes listons whole face and neck contort, low frame rate make it look bad but just watch it in HD and try telling me its a phantom punch
The idea that there was just one time when Ali threw the fastest punch in history and knocked out the formidable Sonny Liston is ridiculous. 4/100ths of a second my ass!! Well why couldn't Ali ever do it again in over 25 fights? He did hit Foreman with dozens of the same right hand leads and Foreman walked through them all. Liston QUIT!!!
@pianoboyfriendable Well Liston did walk into the punch, and the punch was extremely fast. Also your opponent is running into it, he couldn't see it, because Ali was going backwards.it can knock you down. Ali hit him in the temple. I've actually seen a fight where a boxer got knocked out in almost exactly the same fashion. That having said: Liston might have been knocked down. But I don't buy his theatricals. I think he knew that he could not beat Ali anymore, so to avoid humiliation he quit.
@r0llskyay0 the punch.. the name of the video... for 1 secondly anderson silva isnt the ufc lol hes a fighter just like ali was. the whole point of this video and me commenting wasnt directed towards the whole fight just the punch that is shown in the video. i believe it is you that is confused sir
@Mshariati91 Anderson Silva is the greatest mixed martial artists, he is the muhammad ali of mma, stylisticly anyway. Ali knocked a handful of people moving backwards and including liston. Silva knocked out griffen and leben moving backwards and the cameras are way better so you can see it, its the point the other kid was trying to make
Who were you fighting, Violet Lewis? Lenoox's mum!!! No-one gets knocked out with that kind of puinch and that's wht there's this massive debate going on. Liston stayed down deliberately.
Ali knocked him out, ok? There's no trick behind it. I pulled this same move (basically) in a fight and won. Dodge the punch then Punch him as he is pulling back. Kind of like a fadeaway in basketball
Nobody can prove a fight (or any other athletic event) is fixed because nobody but the athlete knows the mind of the athlete at the time it happened. "Say it ain't so Joe!" was what they said to Shoeless Joe Jackson after the Black Sox scandal; and HE DID say that he only took the money from the "fixers" but never did anything to go through with it. He claimed he was playing THEM. So, on issues like that you have to go by your own critical thinking skills. To me, this looks like Sonny tanked.
@lazur: the ref watches the timekeeper as he counts.. or he's supposed to. If the ref reaches ten before the timekeeper reaches nine, it goes as a knockout. That's happened many times, believe it or not. I don't know if anyone's challenged it in court, but if they did, I never heard of it. It's just the way boxing is. Sonny might have gotten up to try to make it look better. I think he knew at the time that nobody was buying it.
I don't think it was fixed at all. I just think Sonny got a good pay day and didn't feel obligated to take another beating. It's no different than a lot of cases where fighters get "knocked out". It's usually a cases where they're not "out cold" and they actually can get up but don't; except in Liston's case it wasn't after that much of a beating. If you knew you were going to get a beating, be honest: would you get up?
@f:Sonny GOT up in time. His ONLY responsibility was to observe the ref's count,& be up before IT reached '10'. The clock DOESN'T MATTER. This the RULE, because a downed fighter can't watch a clock. Sonny's clear-headed, watches ref, waits for '9', & gets up in time. Of COURSE he's ok much before that, but he's entitled to the count, & he knows that. He also knows Ali isn't in a neutral corner, during which time the count's SUPPOSED to stop. The stoppage is the fake part of this, not the punch.
@x: Sonny came in -very- hard. All Ali had to do was put his glove in Sonny's path. What little snap Ali added was insurance. Only Ali was fast enough to do this; consistently beat an opponent to the punch when the other man began his punch first.
ali and all the american boxers are all pussys! the americans just buy the fights und now the russians do it! turkisch boxers are the best in the world actually, but they got payed for losing always.even our badest bopxer is better than all pussys like ali, tyson, marciano etc!!
i heard liston was involved wit the mafia and he had to lose the fight on purpose to pay his debt, and ali was screaming to him to GET UP noone is going to believe this!. Its what i heard idk if its true or not
@ronan5547 I do think Liston took a dive. But this so called phantom punch, must have hurt. It might even have been enough to stagger Liston a bit, but I doubt it was enough to knock the man out, as he had fought for several rounds with a broken jaw (just like Muhammad Ali did btw). I think Liston saw that Ali was still the superior fighter, and realised he would be humiliated again. So he decided not to get back up..
For those that say the knock-out wasn't legit, you should watch the clip 150 times as two sportswriters of the time did. Their conclusion--it was a real knockout. Now, don't blame the messenger. But this conclusion was based on the most meticulous analysis of this fight ever.
i dont have one doubt in my mind that Ali could out box Sonny 10 out of 10 times. But Sonny took a dive and i think Even Ali was shocked as well. Thats probably why he was standing over top of him tellin him, "Aww C'mon Man!! Get up!!" Lol the rest is history
look ali was a great fighter but not a very strong puncher, say what you want about liston but he was known for having a granite chin, you can see that when he fought a prime cleveland williams(a very big puncher) and didnt budge. There is no doubt in my mind that this is not a legitimate knockout. I
Sports Illustrated writer Mark Kram said that Liston told him, “That guy [Ali] was crazy. I didn’t want anything to do with him. And the Muslims were coming up. Who needed that? So I went down. I wasn’t hit.”
@jerz211: You may believe whatever you want, but in slow motion the hook is real. The doctor confirmed the damage to Liston's head. He escaped from an internal bleeding. One thing for certain is that Ali stings like a bee and punch as an impact hammer. Best luck in shaking your head ;-)
@craigslist2019 I'm going to need sources from you to back up claims from this doctor. I was unable to find any results from searching about it. As for my statement above from Liston, it was in Mark Kram's book Ghosts of Manila which Liston tells Mark that he intentionally lost because of his fear of retaliation from the Black Muslims.
I'm not saying Ali couldnt have beaten Liston, but that specific punch was not a genuine knockout hit.
George Chuvalo also confirms the Black Muslim link to Liston's defeat here. This was why Liston took a dive but in my opinion the reason he dived in the 1st was financial. He'd decided to lose but wanted to make as much money out of it as he could. So he chose the result with the highest odds (Ali by KO 1), bet everything he had on it, then made it happen.
To think that Ali had the power to KO Liston of all people, with a single shot is crazy.
@toby099 it was more of a rabbit punch with an angle in his elbow and body weight in the punch, and if you ever been hit in the ear with one of those....you'd know how much it power it can have, it doesn't need much swing as is has body weight behind it....thats why liston went down,
Notice foremans punches....angle in the arm never full stretch....
At the time all the media and all the would be experts could talk about was the Mafia and how Liston took a dive. Fortunately with today's technology you can clearly see Liston's head was travelling towards the punch and it hit him like a head on collision.all but taking his head off his shoulders. Any fighter will tell you when you land one of those you get as big a surprise as the guy you hit as you don't even feel like you hit him hard and it's as much luck than it is skill.
1/ Punch on its own, not much, caught Sonny coming in HARD, virtually knocking himself down. Only the FASTEST man starts a punch after his opponent's punch has almost connected, & still beats him to the punch: Ali. 2/ Liston stayed down because he's entitled to A/ SEE & HEAR a REF's count. He didn't. (Time elapsed is irrelevant). B/ Stay down w/Ali standing over him. 3/ Sonny GOT UP & FOUGHT WELL. Fightstoppage: illegal. 3/ No way Sonny fakes that head shake: Not something a bully masters.
It was a right hand over the top of Liston's jab. Watch the fight with Zora Folley, Ali threw quite a few of those, I believe this one just happened to catch Sonny just right.
Ali definetly hit him. He knocked him down with that punch, it was so devastating because Liston walked right into it, plus it was placed at the right spot. I don't know for sure if it was a knockout punch. I think Liston just knew he couldn't beat Ali if he got up.
I used to buy into that... because Ali did hit him, but I've changed my mind. Sonny got his ass beat in the first fight... and took a dive in this one. He got the last laugh on all of us and a good payday. It's not that Ali wouldn't have beat him again; it's that Sonny knew Ali would beat him again. Sonny did everything he could in the first fight and it didn't work. No way was he going to beat Ali.
@fistofate i Think that also , he had high hopes he would smash that heavy jab through ali and so did any fighter/boxer or any fan .. ali put so many punches on him and was atleast a foot away from that jab he just knew he would not win , fix or not that punch landed and hurt him , if he got up he would have been made a fool of by ali , Muhammad was shouting at him to get up because even he said " no-ones going to believe that you coward , get up and fight " anyway .. muhammad ali G.O.A..T
If it was a fix, and Liston did want to dive...why wouldn't they do so on a more believable punch...a proper punch and he could've just lied down there acting hurt and it wouldn't look fake ..
....and who do think was the third man in the Ring that night?.....you wouldn't even recognise Mr Walcot had you passed him in the street in the daylight !!
If I was a reporter and snapped that shot, I wouldn't sell it off to a paper. I'd give it for free. Because taking a picture like that is like painting the Mona Lisa with your eyes closed.
@michaelyouth You spastic I meant to add that to know that you were the one who took one of Ali's most famous pictures would be priceless. There's better ways of correcting someone you retard..
@zmalik10 DUDE, I just get pissed of, if some jerk wants to be a moral white knight, looking down to the reporter/photographer in this case, on his high horse..You look down on the guy because he did his job.. FUCK ME. I think you know, that if you were the one who made that priceless picture ( i agree it was a great picture), than you would NOT have given that picture away for free... So stop acting like you would have and stop acting like a moral knight..
@michaelyouth I'm not trying to act like a moral knight. How do you know I wouldn't? You don't know my intentions, so think before you speak. And I wasnt looking down at the photographer. I'm actually praising him by saying the picture is priceless. I'm just stating what I would do, not what the photographer should have done.
I remember this well, it was on 25 May 1965. Transmitted live to the UK through the Early Bird Satellite, the pioneering version of what we have today. It was past midnight here when the flickering pictures came on. There was confusion all round, Jersey Joe Walcott, the ref was confused too, but eventually he stopped the fight and awarded it to Ali(Clay) by KO. I was a soldier then when we watched this in a NAAFI canteen, we retired to bed laughing our heads off !!
@fenriz218 .....even the word "internet" was unheard of; the computers were around by them, but they were the huge contraptions which took up one side of your office wall with wheels whirring to the left and right and all sorts. The magical wireless radio transmission and computers combining to give us our PC today, but that wasn't possible till the 80s, so our development is quite recent, in fact. I remember IBM coming out with an earlier version of portable office computer, looks clumsy now.
even if it is a light punch it doesn't matter, because if you hit someone with speed on the right spot then they will go down, it was just a great punch, accept that instead of trying to find holes in a legends career
Don't blink, you'll miss it. Such a shame they didn't have the high speed cameras back then like they do now. Also i think the only reason that someone would believe that Liston took the dive would be that they don't want to accept the fact that their favorite boxer was beaten.
The KO was legit. Watch this tape in slow motion. Liston lunges with his jab, Ali slips it and immediately throws the right. Liston had no time to react and wasn't expecting it, and it landed clean. A punch you don't see coming is a thousand times worse than one you can see and brace yourself for. Liston just didn't see it, it caught him, and that was enough. It didn't matter that there wasn't much power behind it. It was a surprise and Liston ran right into it. That's good enough to do the job.
@JordyPordyPuddinNPie Sonny Liston, the best boxer of his era, knocked out by such a light punch in the first round and rolling around on the floor? I stick with my original comment.
@smokingzaggin Hey smokin, what do you know about boxing? Me? My grandfather and Father were boxing promoters and I saw world championships. How you say that is a light punch reveals your bias and made up mind. Sonny Liston was the best fighter (not boxer) of his era. his era was finished. Ali dominated him in Miami, not even landing one solid punch, including the round where Ali was blinded. Ali was so vastly superior to that plodding has-been. Ali even ko'd Foreman when he was past his prime.
@bumblebeemoi I hate people who think their opinions matter when they have very little factual proof. Watch the documentary "Facing Ali" Foreman says himself that he was told to stay down. The first Liston-Ali fight was interesting at least. This fight was a dissapointment in my view.
Also, when i refer to him as a boxer i mean someone who boxes.
There is no chance that punch, even if it did connect, would have floored Liston so badly. you need only look at Ali and his stance to know that he couldn't of got much power behind the punch as his feet were not planted and he had no weight behind it. Any serous heavyweight would not be knocked out so badly by such a punch.
@darkcowboyhero it did connect, watch it in slow motion. Ali knocked out plenty of people without using heavy handed shots, it was his speed that got to people, if you think you have to be a power puncher to knock someone out you have obviously never participated in or even watched boxing
@MishM0sh he did hit him but it wasnt much of a punch. Liston went to get up straight away and then rolled over. When he did finally get up he still had good reflexes. He was never going to beat Ali and did the smart thing and layed down at the sight of a half decent punch.
@genericgeorge he took harder punches than this in the fight that he could've layed down too , speed makes power , if you can't see a punch and get hit on the spot your out , you see people get hit with hard punched and don't fall because they are set up more for the hit and can see it briefly but try to dodge , sonny seen nothing neither did the cameras until it got broke down into motion , legit k.o and even if he did get up as you say he was a beat man .. ali g.o.a.t simples :D
@calbo555 A legit knockdown I dont doubt at all. He got nailed by a good punch in right/wrong spot and fell. He was surprised and slightly stunned at the punch he didnt see coming, but it was never a knock out blow. He could have got up immediately but chose not to as he was would have been emarrased. Instead he he did that by laying down. He souldnt have taken the fight in the frist place. Alio was superior in all aspects save for power.
ar eyou serious? phantom punch? youre a fucking iditot dont look at the punch look at listons face you can see his head snap from the punch it landed you jackass
Just looking at his stance, how he bounce back, land on both feet right as the punch hits the forward moving Liston on his lower chin. It stung him bad
Ali clearly landed, the "phantom" punch is a complete myth, cos people at the time didn't like Ali,didn't realise how quick the punch was, how great he was and thought Liston unbeatable. Ali was in a different league from the other top fighters Liston had beaten, but the public didn't yet realise it.
if you watch it in slow motion the punch is solid and does land...evidence is that ali lands the punch and you can tell because of the recoil in his arm but more importantly the recoil of the head punch.
People who think this is fake need to watch the punch in HD and watch the perfect punch land and makes listons whole face and neck contort, low frame rate make it look bad but just watch it in HD and try telling me its a phantom punch

He got the last laugh on all of us and a good payday. It's not that Ali wouldn't have beat him again; it's that Sonny knew Ali would beat him again. Sonny did everything he could in the first fight and it didn't work. No way was he going to beat Ali.
fistofate 4 months ago
@fistofate i Think that also , he had high hopes he would smash that heavy jab through ali and so did any fighter/boxer or any fan .. ali put so many punches on him and was atleast a foot away from that jab he just knew he would not win , fix or not that punch landed and hurt him , if he got up he would have been made a fool of by ali , Muhammad was shouting at him to get up because even he said " no-ones going to believe that you coward , get up and fight " anyway .. muhammad ali G.O.A..T
calbo555 4 months ago
If it was a fix, and Liston did want to dive...why wouldn't they do so on a more believable punch...a proper punch and he could've just lied down there acting hurt and it wouldn't look fake ..

Now I know why they called it the phantom punch, I hardly seen his fist move XD

If I was a reporter and snapped that shot, I wouldn't sell it off to a paper. I'd give it for free. Because taking a picture like that is like painting the Mona Lisa with your eyes closed.
zmalik10 5 months ago
@zmalik10 What are you talking about.. Money is money. You would have sold it.. He is a photographer, that is his job ... Idiot
michaelyouth 5 months ago
@michaelyouth You spastic I meant to add that to know that you were the one who took one of Ali's most famous pictures would be priceless. There's better ways of correcting someone you retard..
zmalik10 5 months ago
@zmalik10 DUDE, I just get pissed of, if some jerk wants to be a moral white knight, looking down to the reporter/photographer in this case, on his high horse..You look down on the guy because he did his job.. FUCK ME. I think you know, that if you were the one who made that priceless picture ( i agree it was a great picture), than you would NOT have given that picture away for free... So stop acting like you would have and stop acting like a moral knight..
michaelyouth 5 months ago
@michaelyouth I'm not trying to act like a moral knight. How do you know I wouldn't? You don't know my intentions, so think before you speak. And I wasnt looking down at the photographer. I'm actually praising him by saying the picture is priceless. I'm just stating what I would do, not what the photographer should have done.
zmalik10 5 months ago
@zmalik10 Yeah right. You would give a picture away for free, because the picture is priceless, and give away thousands of dollars.. Hmm right.

Sonny Liston was a shady dude. Rubbing vaseline in guy's eyes then here he takes one of the most questionable losses/dives in boxing history.

whitepanther84 7 months ago 5
I remember this well, it was on 25 May 1965. Transmitted live to the UK through the Early Bird Satellite, the pioneering version of what we have today. It was past midnight here when the flickering pictures came on. There was confusion all round, Jersey Joe Walcott, the ref was confused too, but eventually he stopped the fight and awarded it to Ali(Clay) by KO. I was a soldier then when we watched this in a NAAFI canteen, we retired to bed laughing our heads off !!

@macvatu Early Bird Satellite? That must have been one slow internet connection back in those days!
fenriz218 4 months ago
@fenriz218 .....even the word "internet" was unheard of; the computers were around by them, but they were the huge contraptions which took up one side of your office wall with wheels whirring to the left and right and all sorts. The magical wireless radio transmission and computers combining to give us our PC today, but that wasn't possible till the 80s, so our development is quite recent, in fact. I remember IBM coming out with an earlier version of portable office computer, looks clumsy now.

even if it is a light punch it doesn't matter, because if you hit someone with speed on the right spot then they will go down, it was just a great punch, accept that instead of trying to find holes in a legends career

look AT THE SLOW MO HE DOES PUNCH HIM
adams63 1 year ago
Don't blink, you'll miss it. Such a shame they didn't have the high speed cameras back then like they do now. Also i think the only reason that someone would believe that Liston took the dive would be that they don't want to accept the fact that their favorite boxer was beaten.
KisameSouth 1 year ago
omg it´s too fast
AlmaHades 1 year ago

I stick with my original comment.
smokingzaggin 10 months ago
@smokingzaggin I stick with my original comment.
JordyPordyPuddinNPie 10 months ago
@smokingzaggin Hey smokin, what do you know about boxing? Me? My grandfather and Father were boxing promoters and I saw world championships. How you say that is a light punch reveals your bias and made up mind. Sonny Liston was the best fighter (not boxer) of his era. his era was finished. Ali dominated him in Miami, not even landing one solid punch, including the round where Ali was blinded. Ali was so vastly superior to that plodding has-been. Ali even ko'd Foreman when he was past his prime.
bumblebeemoi 10 months ago
@bumblebeemoi I hate people who think their opinions matter when they have very little factual proof. Watch the documentary "Facing Ali" Foreman says himself that he was told to stay down. The first Liston-Ali fight was interesting at least. This fight was a dissapointment in my view.
Also, when i refer to him as a boxer i mean someone who boxes.

luckybucky95 1 year ago
There is no chance that punch, even if it did connect, would have floored Liston so badly. you need only look at Ali and his stance to know that he couldn't of got much power behind the punch as his feet were not planted and he had no weight behind it. Any serous heavyweight would not be knocked out so badly by such a punch.
This was a dive and a fix.
darkcowboyhero 1 year ago
@darkcowboyhero ya liston admitted it, go see "Ghosts of manila" theres an interview where liston says he took the dive
casino16 1 year ago
@darkcowboyhero it did connect, watch it in slow motion. Ali knocked out plenty of people without using heavy handed shots, it was his speed that got to people, if you think you have to be a power puncher to knock someone out you have obviously never participated in or even watched boxing
MishM0sh 9 months ago
@MishM0sh he did hit him but it wasnt much of a punch. Liston went to get up straight away and then rolled over. When he did finally get up he still had good reflexes. He was never going to beat Ali and did the smart thing and layed down at the sight of a half decent punch.
genericgeorge 9 months ago
@genericgeorge he took harder punches than this in the fight that he could've layed down too , speed makes power , if you can't see a punch and get hit on the spot your out , you see people get hit with hard punched and don't fall because they are set up more for the hit and can see it briefly but try to dodge , sonny seen nothing neither did the cameras until it got broke down into motion , legit k.o and even if he did get up as you say he was a beat man .. ali g.o.a.t simples :D
calbo555 5 months ago
@calbo555 A legit knockdown I dont doubt at all. He got nailed by a good punch in right/wrong spot and fell. He was surprised and slightly stunned at the punch he didnt see coming, but it was never a knock out blow. He could have got up immediately but chose not to as he was would have been emarrased. Instead he he did that by laying down. He souldnt have taken the fight in the frist place. Alio was superior in all aspects save for power.
genericgeorge 5 months ago
ar eyou serious? phantom punch? youre a fucking iditot dont look at the punch look at listons face you can see his head snap from the punch it landed you jackass
estafuego8807 1 year ago
Just looking at his stance, how he bounce back, land on both feet right as the punch hits the forward moving Liston on his lower chin. It stung him bad
madskofod 1 year ago
Ali clearly landed, the "phantom" punch is a complete myth, cos people at the time didn't like Ali,didn't realise how quick the punch was, how great he was and thought Liston unbeatable. Ali was in a different league from the other top fighters Liston had beaten, but the public didn't yet realise it.

kingdarius1991 1 year ago
if you watch it in slow motion the punch is solid and does land...evidence is that ali lands the punch and you can tell because of the recoil in his arm but more importantly the recoil of the head punch.
