As soon as it stated doing well Killing Joke invited me to join their band. I listened to their latest album. “Outside the Gate” and I hated it. It was appalling. I loved early Killing Joke. But “Outside the Gate” was a milestone in horrifying bullshit.
@brajtnerinjo I don't think Outside the Gate is bad, it sounds great to me. It's not much like other KJ material, but that's because it was supposed to be a project recorded under a different name. They couldn't afford it so they resorted to release it under KJ. It's a shame really. But then again to each their own taste :)
Wow, I have not heard this song song since early 90's! I loved KJ when I was 15/16.One of my favorite songs! God bless america. Otherwise Jaz and his fellow POME's would be sprechen zie deutsche, or working in a chinese prison factory.Still, awesome musician!
Easiest thing in the world recently is being anti-American. Yes they have their excesses and their share of abuse; but I'm glad there's still a clenched fist of steel in a horribly limp and soft Western civilization today.
I fucking hate American politicians, but i love America, the same thing is my faith,i belivie in God but i fucking hate religion! We like or dislike a nation depending of politicians, what nation can we love, what nation has a totaly clean government?
@Lukenetpsbsb I'm afraid to say Fidel Castro, since he also has blood on its hands, but alteast he's the fairest communist leaders around. He just fails because America is boycotting everything they do, which has always been kind of childish in my opinion.
I wouldn't mind the hammy political message if the song were at all decent. I'm a pretty new Killing Joke fan, so I have no vested interest in disliking Outside the Gate. It's clearly bad on its own merits. Luckily they snapped out of this silliness pretty quickly.
That said, Jaz does have some great facial expressions in this one.
@drkissinger1 I remember buying this at the time of it's release (without hearing it!) and thinking "what a pile of shit". This wasn't to my mind anyway, really a Killing Joke LP; just Jaz and Geordie and the sound is overly synthetic, but if you think about it, this track is on the surface, glossy and commercial but underneath it's still a steaming turd. Now; doesn't that sound a lot like America itself? That said, I can't really disagree with the sentiments, which are as relevant now as ever.
You can't blame him for what his country did in the past and it doesn't mean he can't criticise the US either since they are the ruling power in HIS lifetime not his ancestors.
@deadbeatrehab Undoubtedly true. However, Coleman is intelligent enough to realise that Britain is a spent force and knows it. Which is why our government sucks up to America, thinking that having them for "best mates" makes us somehow relevant. A kind of "Disagree with us & we'll get our big brother" attitude. This is of course ridiculous, as it just means we have no choice but to get sucked into their unjust wars. Make no mistake, though; we're still world class shit stirrers.
@deadbeatrehab : true, but come on...although the UK has style (and a fancy accent), no one works imperialism so good as America! Besides...it would sound funny when jaz sings: in the UUUK!
@deadbeatrehab Countries can change, but America never changed at all. The only reason our european governments awnser to america is because we'd otherwise be labelled as communists, terrorists etc.
Obama might be the best thing ever to have happened, and all you do is whine about it. Oh, this song is correct alright. Atleast, its exactly how we europeans think.
@deadbeatrehab very true, but Jaz probably sees an exception in himself. His mother being half Indian, he has considered himself in interviews 'a child of the colonial system.' he claims he doesn't like England, anyway. but i agree
@deadbeatrehab That doesn't mean that he agrees with those policies either.Besides, for better or worse, UK colonialism counts centuries ago.American imperialistic policies are still a thing of the present, not yesteryear. This does NOT say a thing about the American people or any nation for that matter.I have only good things to say about them, in general.
Great video - maybe their best - and good song too - what's the album like? I know it's not popular and basically a Coleman solo album (can barely hear Geordie on this)...
It's an odd album. I haven't listened to it for about 20 years but I'm delighted to hear it all again now. Yeah, synth heavy and Jaz is clearly completely bonkers at this point, but that cannae be a bad thing? Surely? Outside the Gate & Tiahuanacno alone make it worthwhile. Oh, and I seem to recall Jaz chats about cricket on "My Love of This Land". Fuckit, is there a Killing Joke record not worth exploring?
u must be thick in the head - they had no choice in where they were born, and England (unlike USA) is full of people who are willing to criticise instead of swallowing the lines fed by corporations, washington and gordon brown
I think it's a great name. And I think they're a really one-of-a-kind band and very influential to the post-punk era and beyond. And this video is outstanding. I hope it got plenty of airplay.
Too much synth.......need more chunky guitars!

What model guitar is that? It looks like an old Gibson Super 400 but I'm not sure. It's so odd seeing Geordie playing anything other than his ES-295!

ok, so the graphics arent great, and its all a bit cheesy and over the top, but I thought the idea of the video was pretty good.
for instance, a slot machine that determines the outcome of global warfare.
also, the flashed image of Oliver North.
