@pfmdaddy there's no way in hell you have a hook in less than a minute using ST-80's and a mud bucket, because if the 80's aren't stored all the way back it is against regulations and it takes every bit of half a minute just for them to reach the tool joint.

I did my time on the Drilling Rigs in the Australian desserts in the 90's and we were probably seeing the last of the old hiballin tough bastards, those old timers would whip your ass with your own tong line if ya didn't move fast enough (rev that motor up and get that cathead at top speed and if ya weren't quick enough, ya wouldn't be sittin for the rest of the day). I worked with some fast crews and I certainly wasn't a slouch on the drill floor but these blokes take the cake

These guys are fairly fast but the third man helping out being the derrickman makes life a lot easier and faster. I worked on singles in the early 80's that looked just like this. We often had to work short handed and still got the job done. As far as to all the bitchin' about safety, there were little to no safety guidelines back then and presume that this is an old video. Had a crap load of fun working my arse off while making very good money.
@MrLouisPoole Any Drill I worked on had 2 Roughnecks and a Motorman that is 3 on the floor. The only time we worked with 2 was if there was no Roustabout and alot of pipe cleaning to do, usually surface hole.

I have seen a 110 kg roughneck get thrown across the floor with a snapped fema when the driller accidentally kicked the rotary table in. If this was a big open A frame derrick, then Rig management and Driller should be sacked, otherwise fairly unavoidable on a carrier rig and when I worked on them not many people liked you taken the time to lock and unlock the table in this situation

@pushintongs yes I threw chain for 16 years st,, I worked the board when I had to and drilled when I had to, Twisted off when I wanted to twist, and although I through chain I worked motors love those big whites and 399 cats get me all fired up. derrick hand spent to much time in the mud house for me, as for big I worked the last 6 standard land rigs in the states and parker 201 which was the rig biggest then, parker 45 and 54 were 201 ft standards, 16 on chain and motors 4 derrick and drilling

Norway, have machines doing the same job. why do you americans doing it the old way ?? i know you guys also have the same tech as we do! so im just wondering why?. replace those guys with a hydraulic pipe conector and you would be able to reduce the amount of people getting harmed. and yeah the way you guys doing it is not faster. maybe cheaper thou, but still this is the tech we used back in the 70's.

@haarstad88 well lets think that one over, we have these rigs already made, they still work, and buying newer better rigs is expensive. Yes it is very true that top drives and coil rigs are faster, safer, etc... but this is also an industry about saving money.

I did my time on the Drilling Rigs in the Australian desserts in the 90's and we were probably seeing the last of the old hiballin tough bastards, those old timers would whip your ass with your own tong line if ya didn't move fast enough (rev that motor up and get that cathead at top speed and if ya weren't quick enough, ya wouldn't be sittin for the rest of the day). I worked with some fast crews and I certainly wasn't a slouch on the drill floor but these blokes take the cake

These guys are fairly fast but the third man helping out being the derrickman makes life a lot easier and faster. I worked on singles in the early 80's that looked just like this. We often had to work short handed and still got the job done. As far as to all the bitchin' about safety, there were little to no safety guidelines back then and presume that this is an old video. Had a crap load of fun working my arse off while making very good money.

@MrLouisPoole Any Drill I worked on had 2 Roughnecks and a Motorman that is 3 on the floor. The only time we worked with 2 was if there was no Roustabout and alot of pipe cleaning to do, usually surface hole.

@wwatson44 This is a first class connection but I sort of agree with the crowbar thing. I have seen a 110 kg roughneck get thrown across the floor with a snapped fema when the driller accidentally kicked the rotary table in. If this was a big open A frame derrick, then Rig management and Driller should be sacked, otherwise fairly unavoidable on a carrier rig and when I worked on them not many people liked you taken the time to lock and unlock the table in this situation

Sorry but this is not quick , it's slick ,but not quick . Equipments running good although some safety issues here with ppe but generally the guys know what they doing . It's repetative work though eh ! . Through em a curve ball then see how quick they are . Not one of these guys ever looked up . Gotta be aware of your surroundings fella's . Stay alert . I thew chain for 16 years in the okla and west texas fields, only cause I was the best chain hand ever, we ran a 100 foot stand every 44 seconds all night long on 16,000 to 28,000 foot trips all day every day!! @pushintongs it's easy to be fast when you only do half of the job,, braking the old joint off with the table,, great way to kill your floor hands, never seen a snub line break?? one set of tongs to torque the connection,, never had to sledge hammer a string out or wash a joint off because the pipe wasn't torqued right?? It's a worm crew sorry but thats what it is,, I worked the deepest gas field in the US for 20 years and I have had to fish out strings that worms like these lost.

@pushintongs yes I threw chain for 16 years st,, I worked the board when I had to and drilled when I had to, Twisted off when I wanted to twist, and although I through chain I worked motors love those big whites and 399 cats get me all fired up. derrick hand spent to much time in the mud house for me, as for big I worked the last 6 standard land rigs in the states and parker 201 which was the rig biggest then, parker 45 and 54 were 201 ft standards, 16 on chain and motors 4 derrick and drilling

@pushintongs you know it isn't the floor hands that get me fired up in this video it's the driller,, he is going to kill some hands or cost some company big time! That breaking pipe with the table and making it up with one set of tongs is crap they do on hyd doubles, floor hands kill themselves if the driller doesn't teach them the right way, that is hard to do when you are taking shortcuts, and worse some worm driller will see this and think that the way it's done, do it fast, but do it right

That just the way it was back then,. like every thing else we eventually over time made things safer in the oil patch. But it was wild and fast everyday was like a rodeo, You took pride in gettin er done in weather as hot as hell to 40 below zero, tripping thousands of feet of pipe layin it down running casing DST's cement jobs what ever. No front end loader just a cat line and a boom line no kelly spinner, just us. And the partyin after work was another story.Crazy times. Better now much safer.
