Here's what I think about the Portal 1/2 music debate; yeah, Portal 1's music is much better than Portal 2's, but I think there's a reason for that. These songs, in the first Portal, are meant to give you the sense that there is something about the facility that you shouldn't know about. Something deeper, darker, more sinister. In Portal 2, it's revealed that of course there is. Once you find it out, there's no reason to hint at it. And, perhaps, Chell is more than a little numbed to Apature.

@imakeyougoWTF Finally! Someone else who sees it that way. This is always how I have felt. Portal 2 is finding about the past of the characters a lot, to me personally, GLaDOS especially. The first one is finding about GLaDOS's intentions instead. I find it hard to compare them because they have very different soundtracks, that are both very good I think. Just in their own unique ways.

This music is what made this game so dark for me. The first time I heard it when you enter the ratman den with the word "HELP" written all over the walls really conveyed the unspeakable horror of what has happened in Aperture.

I love how this song triggers whenever you enter a Ratman cave or a part of the test that you're not supposed to see or know about according to GLaDOS.

It gives the feeling that there really IS something other than the test, something more important beyond the sterile concrete walls and the empty promise of delicious cake at the end of the experiment.

When I hear it in Portal, no matter how many times I've beaten the game, it makes me think, "What is going on out there?"

@Yoshermon It's creepy, and if you go on Scource SDK for portal, hammer editor, go on the texture list, and look up "warworkers" you see a black and white photo of people welding something...When I hear this song, I imagin them working to go with the backround sounds... It's almost spooky... The action of Half Life is completely forgotten when you turn on Portal.
