A gay friend of mine used to get beat up in high school because he was gay. But when he got into college he happend to join the university gym. The bully didn't see all the muscle my friend built up under his clothes so when the bully swung at my gay friend the bully got a beating of a lifetime. Black eyes, broken tooth, the works. I was unusual in high school too, but nobody shoved me into a locker or beat me up. (The beating-up thing happened more in elementary school.) Some of my fellow students probably thought that I was queer (in which case they would have been correct, though it took me a while to acknowledge just *how* queer). Fortunately, no physical violence, though. In some ways, silence and subtle ostracization are forms of violence too. But maybe more bearable than a black eye?
