@JBottcher07 There's a lill tab beside the battery compartment, you need to push that tab & pull out the battery tray at the same time. Sub my channel as I'll be adding a HEAP of 550D tips soon. Cheers
@erfo1 it works on infrared, and i have used it upto 18 feet distance, for still and video both and it works great. it works fine atleast 30 degree all around from straight center line over that it's hit and miss.

Does it have the halfway pressure button to do a focus, like the camera itself, or is there another remote that can do that?

Hey.
I have the 550D and will use it as a secondary camera when filming weddings.
The camera will be on an unmanned video stand at the altar facing the bride and groom.
Due to limitations with 12-minute continuous shooting, i will use the remote control to start filming again and again during the seremony.
Will the remote work from an oblique angle??
