It depends on who we mean when when we say "Alexi Laiho". Is it the guitar god who plays on the albums or is it that blond tatooed loser-looking dude that "sings" and "plays" guitar with the band live. Because there is no way that the schmuck who is playing live on these Youtube clips is the same one that plays on the record. It is like night and day. Of course this particular clip is all studio... thank the Lord.

Honestly to put together in a 'battle' two COMPLETLY DIFFERENT genres is in no way a way to find out who is better, yes you can argue that they have similar style of playing but Alexi will melt off your face with intense sweeps to heavy riffs where Jani will blow your mind with ridiculous melodic melodies...in the end i know that both of these guitarists are amazing but i don't think that we can put these two into a 'battle'

Um Alexi isnt a standard melodic player he stretches his melodies across the fret board. Jani keeps his melodies close together and tight. Personally i think Alexi wins. But Jani is still amzing.

Hard to say. Jani's playing is cleaner, but 15 years ago, Alexi could play all of his stuff cleanly. He's had too many beers since then. But Alexi still has that style and flair to his playing that really sets him apart for me. So I give it to Alexi.

@biggboypoop Not trying to be a jerk about this, but assuming that those solos are Jani's best while both a) not doing any research, and b) knowing they didn't put Alexi's best up I think is being a little quick to the draw. And I agree with a lot of comments that I've seen that say (to paraphrase) "Jani's playing is a lot cleaner, but Alexi's style his more flourish." I think both players could understand and perform each other's work, it's just what do they prefer to play/what is written.

Both are really good. Technically Alexi melts faces, while Jani is a very symphonic player. No need for a competition... Theyre all brofessional. At the end of the day, who would you sit down to have a beer with? thats what matters.

I respect Jani but some of his solos sound like they came out of a fantasy video game. Actually, some Sonata Arctica's songs sound like fantasy music. I prefer COB over any other Finnish metal band, or maybe even British or American bands! COB's early albums make neo classical sound good because of Alexi's 80's rock background. Their latest albums are also fantastic but not as good as Hatebreeer, Follow the Reaper, or Hate Crew Deathroll.
