Since when did trains travel faster then a speeding bullet??? And I agree with thetrainman407, shows will make up almost anything cuz the controller did not fall asleep, bunch of idiots running this show
To clear some things up. It was not a "Controller" falling asleep, but rather an engineer not properly setting the brakes on the locomotive while lining a switch. Also, not once did they mention the use of a 2nd train that coupled on from the rear and slowed it down to a speed of about 11 MPH. I swear shows will just make anything up to get the entertainment value out of their program...
@penguinmaster7 You've no idea what you're talking about lol. If a train goes through a red signal, the engineer has 30 seconds to act to stop the train. If he doesn't, the brakes automatically kick on.
This of course, is assuming the air brake hoses are tied; they must not have been in this case.
I don't know if anybody else realized this or not, but this is the real life event that the movie "Unstoppable" is based off of.
@Yoshiisland12345 You have no idea what you are talking about either. I've been through a red block and no the brakes don't automatically apply. The only time the brakes are going to apply, w/o an engineer is if the alerter isn't acknowledged before it times out, then you'll have an application w/o setting you're own air or plugging it.
@PfhUkJiu101 Yes, trains have alerter systems that flash and beep at the engineer to keep his attention ever so often. Older motors had deadman pedals on the floor that needed to be pressed down the entire trip; a brick could override that so the engineer could get up. Also, some older motors had a wire in the chair that sensed the engineer sitting down, moving the chair; hang your keys on the wire and you could leave as they rattled and swayed. We all find ways to override safety features.
are you sure its ok to send shotgun ammo into a diesel tank expecting to make a hole so the fuel can drain out but not expecting total ignition of the remaining fuel?
they are wrong. the asshole didnt fall asleep he tried to jump back on the train but was drug for 80 feet. The movie Unstoppable which is based of this story is fairly accurate on how the train got loose from the yard
Alerter? what alerter that is an old SD40-2 and this happened long enough ago CSX didnt even think about adding an alerter and no the brakes were not 100% applied they were released just in case anyone cares about info from a CSX employee and yes the fuel shut off has to be held in to shut the engine down it has to starve the fuel pump to shut it down it takes a min or two for it to run down all the way and if you release it too early it picks the fuel back up and revs back up to its set notch
@502nuts This SD40-2 had an older style alerter which was malfunctioning. I live about 10 minutes from where this happened & I still have all the newspaper articles about it
I work for Union Pacific and every yard job Ive worked, we never hooked up the big air. Here in Louisiana its flat enough to just use the brakes on the Locomotives.
But this isn't the full story. I have been reading and the Fuel Shut-off on an SD40-2 like Crazy Eights has to be held down for a few seconds to even begin working. And what about Q63615? They completely left it out, even though that is what truely slowed Crazy Eights.
@trainlover479 Well, the locomotive was probably at notch 7 or 8, so brakes shoes where worn to shit after a while. That is why the alerter didn't go off
What is a train controller? ...and why would him falling asleep cause this train to runaway unmanned? Don't these things have a deadman's switch that will apply brakes automatically unless the engineer complies by pulling a lever which proves that the train is under control? GEEEEZ!
JM: Oh, I didn't say that, the narrator did. But anyway, what about the deadman's switch? Whatever....but the guy who jumped aboard is a big time hero. Just think what a disaster he averted with all those tank cars on that train. The railroad should pay him enough to retire on. He could have easily been killed.
@dirtman119 Emergency cut off button right above the fuel tank. The whole idea was to shoot it and activate the emergency cut off switch and shut the locomotive down.
lemme get this right......they shoot the emergency kill switch that is located on the fuel tank??? couldnt that risk blowing up the whole locomotive??? ...idiots
@RRMEGATRON The metal on the fuel tank is too thick to go through with bullets. It was a flawed plan as it is a very small button on a very large and fast moving train.
Thats a fact! I like most of your comments! They always try to make the railroaders seem like a bunch of dumbshits! While I dont railroad now I have in the past and I can tell that it pisses me off as much as it does the rest of you that are.
So, Narrator, you would let your train go onto the wrong track, shoot near the fuel tank AS IT'S ENGINE ARE RUNNING, AND Jump aboard a train -- which, apparently, can defy the laws of physics -- while it's moving???
@MrBigredsfan Unstoppable is far from an awesome movie. There are so many errors concerning railroad equipment, terminology, procedures, statistics and so on and so forth that it just kills it for most people who know anything about trains.
@Defiant47 Truth be told, if movied did tell the truth, most people wouldn't understand it. It's one of those occasions where you either tell the truth or make it entertaining, impossible to have both
@JoaoMario24 Yeah, I know. I saw a clip where in an interview with a cop who was involved said the real story wasn't that interesting. Shit like that is always hyped up. It just helps believability if at the very least, correct information and terminology were used. Quick example, the "heros" were in an SD40-2, a 3000hp locomotive. In the movie, the engineer said it was 5000hp. With that sort of increase, the runaway AC4400's, at 4400hp, each would be 7-8000 a piece! :D
@Defiant47 True, I don't know much about trains [all my knowledge comes from MSTS], and I have to tell you, even though I likes that movie a lot the innacuracy of the details did put me off.
They said the brakes were ground down to the framing upon inspection. Check out the wiki site on it, pretty detailed account, makes the news vid seem very dumbed down.
@arsenix2001 Dead man's switch/alerter wasn't active because the loco was being used for shunting work when it ran away. Hence why the brakes never came on.

To all you train guys reading this, I salute you. You work hard and you earn every dollar. I wish the rest of the country and our politicians would support you more and also passenger rail
Half witted controller??? As a UP Engineer I resent that. The "half-witted"controller" was a dumbass Engineer who left his train cab to thow a switch, oh and he left it running under power aka throttled up.
Yep, this engine does have an Alerter System. However, the engineer, before hopping off the locomotive had made a brake pipe reduction of 20psi. In such a case the Alerter won't engage since the brakes _have_ been applied. Problem is is that the train behind it hasn't been laced so the reduction won't do a thing.
i think the engineer left it notch 1 then got out to throw the swith that was agianst him. when he stood up he must have buped the throttle to 8 without knowing it and it was too late when he noticed. either thet or the choo choo ferry took it for a joy ride. i would of blamed them damned kids.
