What a beautiful habitat for your birds. Do you find that the mural gets pooped on constantly by the birds? Does it require cleaning? Also, the doors look rather large; do you worry about the birds escaping while you are cleaning or changing food/water? Thanks a lot!
@ArmandoQ16 Hey thanks. Sadly, I had to sell this when we moved out of our house. I use thick wood shavings for the flooring and use a wildbird feeder so I only replace food and clean the bottom once a month. The mural and plexiglas don't really get pooped on that much so I only wipe them clean every once in a while. The water gets changed everyday though. When I get inside the birds just fly off to the perches on the other side. I usually use the bottom door to clean out the aviary.
@Mykman512 Yes I agree but if I made the doors any smaller it would be difficult to clean the inside. Anyway, the door at the bottom is what I used to clean the thing most of the time.
Wow you are gifted as a builder. Here in S.Florida outdoor aviarys are popular but I am considering an indoor one for my java rice finches as just to many predators in the area esp snakes.
You could make money building those for area customers but granted it is alot of work and you can't ship them as just to large.
Nice aviary but you should get some of the more colorful finches like Gouldians and Cordon Bleus. Blue finches are gorgeous with green background or fake plants.
It looks almost like mine. But both of the side doors are plexi so you can see from both sides. Plexi-glass is the way to go if you really want to enjoy watching but it does have its drawback- it's easy to scratch if you're not careful with cleaning. I don't have any noticeable scratches even though I've had the cage for more than 2 years now but that's because I'm extra careful. When it's clean people think theres nothing in front until they get really close.
Very nice cage!!! I can relate. I have a zebra finch cage that the birds can come and go as they please. The cage is outside the house and so the birds fly all ove the neighborhood and come home to eat and sleep. If you are interested, go to Hawaiidoves and scroll to you come to the zebra finch video.
@hawaiidoves Hi, I actually saw your vid before. Used to have a pair of zebs but they were kinda aggresive towards the other birds. I would love to have an outdoor aviary but the thought of rats visiting was enough to convince me to have it indoors.
Do you have the instructions/plans for building this aviary? I would also like to know how much this cost to build as we would really like to make one... Awesome work!
@freelucky14 I kinda improvised as I was making this so there were a lot of mistakes and re-do's. It was originally about 6 ft long and mistakes in measurements made me trim it down to accomodate the plexiglas. Not sure how much I spent on it as I made dozens of trips to the hardware store.
@rgotine Only when the birds are first introduced to the aviary. Once they know that the glass is there, they don't fly into it anymore. It is a soft kind of plexiglass.
hey that's a great design aviary! I have been a bird fancier for many years and bred finches for over 20 years now. I have a question to ask to people who are well versed here. How do you deal with the birds fouling up the bottom of their aviary?
I built one outside with plants and all and always the same over"poop" problem! Any advice?
I use aspen shavings on mine, about 3-4 inches of it and just rake it every few days. I completely clean it out and put new shavings every 2-3 months. Since yours is outside, you might wanna try sand flooring, easy to wash and rake.
I read about using sand somewhere so I think it's safe. I also read that some kind of shavings (cedar) could be dangerous if it gets wet and inhaled by the birds, not so sure how accurate that is but I keep mine indoors so no chance of the shavings getting wet from the rain.
I hope you don't mind but my husband (Chris - this is his username) is building this exact flight cage for my 6 Budgies and 6 Finches, just slightly larger. I loved it so much when I saw it!! We are not staining it the same colour, and we probably wont have a mural, but I will post finished photos for you!
Just some advice-
I don't recommend having strawberry finches. They're very aggressive.
Oh yeah.. I have a video of my finches on my channel!!!

I think that you are very very clever and i think that is a stunning aviary to look at and if i was a finch i would love that to be my home :-)

@si2008nz Only when they are first introduced into the habitat but the plexiglass is the very thin, flexible kind.
They are quick to know where the boundary is.

@subersibo considering how easily birds get sick, I think I'd clean it far more often than once a month..
TheScaletIbisNW 1 month ago
@TheScaletIbisNW I never had any heath problems with my birds while I had the habitat but I agree, cleaning more often would probably be better.

Do you remember the thickness of the plexiglass you used? I'm looking to make an aviary similar to this. Thanks!

@wrights1618 hi, not sure but it's pretty thin. it's actually the largest size plexiglass they sell at Lowe's.

doesn't sand bother them? There's also the really thin wood shaving that I used for my rabbits, would you recommend that instead?
