@860125mwj Had Tatum lived a year longer, he would've no doubt played Autumn Leaves. He died too soon I could cry. Check out Hugo Van Neck's rendition of Autumn Leaves. It's probably the closest thing you'd ever hear.
Glorious playing, gorgeous interpretation. It's rare when so elaborate a rendering reveals even more of the emotional substance of such a classic, but this rivals the very best arrangements that Liszt ever did (and those in the hands of Busoni or Horowitz), not to mention versions by other jazz luminaries. Maybe I'm just too familiar with or fond of the piece, but can't understand why more people aren't over the moon about this!
@gpawlicki You nailed it. You have to listen through the flash to see what Art Tatum is taking the song. E.g. 1:44-2:11, my brain is exploding and it's not from the flourishes.
@gpawlicki Good observation, now go to Pablo Recorde for 10 or so albums recording him in straight for 3days called solo masterpieces. YThe produver, Norman Granz said sit and play of the top of your head your fav. songs. For three days. This is one of them.
@raleiti Thanks, I hadn't realized that the Pablo set was available on CD. Cool that Pablo/Fantasy/Concord has done a Centennial project too. Still looking for other than MP3s of the 'The Tatum Group Masterpieces' . . .
